Wife and Mother Claimed by Death - The hope created last Thursday by the news of improvement of Mrs. F. V. Maart was of short duration and proved to be only a short rally before the end, for at seven o'clock that evening another message came from Rochester that she had passed away. Mrs. Maart had been a sufferer for a couple of years with goiter and later with heart complications that greatly reduced the possibility of her recovery. Two weeks ago, as the last and only hope, she was taken to the Mayo Hospital at Rochester, Minn., for treatment, and though progress at no time was wholly assuring, she rallied sufficiently during Wednesday night of last week as to give hope there was a chance, but this was dispelled during the day as she gradually became weaker and finally passed away. During her illness everything that relatives and friends and local medical skill could do for her was done, but without avail. --- Edith Haurigan was born February 13th, 1889, at Crawfordsville, Iowa, and was nearly 37 years old at the time of her death. In 1910 she accompanied her parents to the vicinity of Melstone, and for some years taught school in this vicinity, being the second teacher of the first school in this city. Throughout those pioneer years she was one of the most popular young ladies of the community. In 1915 she became the bride of Fred V. Maart, their happy wedded life being blessed with four children, one of whom was taken by death two years ago. As a wife, mother, and neighbor, she is soken of on every hand as devoted and loved. Left to mourn are the husband and three children; Stella 9; Margaret, 7; and a baby (Warren) but six months old; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E. Haurigan; two brothers, Robert and Homer Haurigan; and two sisters - Mesdames E. T. Pegg, of Billings and Chas. Hadrath of North Bend, Oregon. --- All were resent at the funeral except Mrs. Hadrath. Funeral services were held at the Congregational Church here this afternoon, Rev. S. W. Pollard officiating, and were largely attended. A choir consisting of Messrs. Watts and Crouse and the Misses Crouse amnd Hollensteiner, with Mrs. Watts accompaning, sang numerous of the favorite selections of the departed.Interment was made at Cabin Creek Cemetery, south of Mel- stone. Messrs. Miller, Crum, Colburn, Rode, Jennings, and Weeks bearing the remains to their final resting place. Many floral tributes and a large attendance at both services besoke the respect entertained for Mrs. Maart and the sympathy held out for the bereaved relatives.

EDWARD G. MAGOON---- EDWARD G. MAGOON DIES UNEXPECTEDLY ------------ DEATH FOLLOWS FEW HOURS OF SICKNESS SUNDAY MORNING ------------ Prominent Resident Succumbs To Bronchial Pneumonia, Developed In Short Time ------------ Suffering illness less than twenty-four hours, Edward G. Magoon, one of the best known and at the same time one of Muscatine's prominent citizens, residing at 101 West Fifth street, succumbed yesterday morning at 11 o'clock with a suddenness that stunned the community. No warning had been given that his condition was precarious until a few hours prior to his demise. Friday morning he had made a visit to the business section of the city and upon return to his residence complained of feeling unwell, but no alarm was felt by either himself or relatives at the time. He did not repair to his bed until late Saturday evening, when his condition took a startling change for the worse. Within the space of a few hours bronchial pneumonia had set in and his constitution was not sufficiently strong to successfully combat the disease. He had attained the age of 47 years. The deceased was a resident of Muscatine all his life, having been born here December 26, 1864. His profession was that of sign writer, being the only man operating this business in this city. He had been engaged upon this work practically all his life. On December 5, 1889, he was united in marriage to Miss Lulu C. Van Horn, a member of one of Muscatine's best known families, whose brother, E. S. Van Horn, of Columbus, Ohio, is Mr. Magoon's nearest surviving relative, excepting his widow and daughter. Fraternally Mr. Magoon was affiliated with the Sons of Revolution, the Welker Veterans, Homesteaders and Modern Brotherhood of America. He received membership in the Sons of Revolution last April. His death means the second vacancy in the Welkers Veterans within the last several weeks, Dr. Casper H. Sterneman, also a member, having passed away recently. Mr. Magoon was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George D. Magoon, the former one of Muscatine's pioneer contractors and builders. The Late George Magoon built the home wherein his son breathed his last yesterday morning. Some of the most important structures in Muscatine are the handiwork of George D., he having erected the St. Mary's church, the old Methodist church, the Hotel Webster, which is now the Grand Hotel, and some of the most elegant residences in the city. Only two of the immediate relatives survive Edward G. Magoon, being his widow and daughter, Miss Edith Magoon. Warren Kincaid of Nebraska, and Charles and William Kincaid of Muscatine, all three uncles of the decedent, also survive him, as does an aunt, Mrs. J. A. Bishop. The funeral will be held from the family residence at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Dr. J. N. Elliott, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, will conduct the services.

DEATH OF T. C. MANFUL.-----West Liberty mourns the loss of one of her most influential and public spirited citizens in the death of T. C. Manful, who died at his home in that city yesterday of Bright’s disease. Mr. Manful had been suffering with the fatal ailment for over a year and spent nearly all of last winter in Florida in hopes of the change of climate benefiting him. This it failed to do and he returned to West Liberty in May and had since calmly and bravely awaited the final summons. In his death West Liberty and Muscatine county lose a valued citizen, one who enjoyed the respect and esteem of all with whom he had business or social relations. Always generous and public spirited he was willing to do anything within reason to advance the interests of or benefit West Liberty or his fellow citizens. His death will be sincerely regretted by his many friends throughtout the county. Mr. Manful was born in Augusta, Carroll county, Ohio, Oct. 26, 1823. He had the good fortune of laying the foundation of a splendid physique in work on his father’s farm, which life he exchanged at 16 for a clerkship in his brother’s store where he continued for two years and then went to Pittsburg, Penn., and worked at puddling with his brother-in-law in the Iron Works. On Sept. 25, 1845, he was married to Miss Agnes Pennock. Of this marriage, one child, a daughter, was born November 10, 1846, which event the young mother did not long survive. The loss of his wife added to labor disturbances in the iron mills, led to his leaving Pittsburg and returning to his brother’s store in Ohio. Here in 1848, he wedded Miss Mary Shourds. He remained in Ohio until 1858 and seeing no particularly luminous future ahead, he came to Iowa, and entered Robert Miller’s store at West Liberty. Family ties caused his return in 1862 to Ohio, where he associated himself with a nephew in general merchandizing. But the prairies of Iowa had stamped their beauty and attractiveness upon him, the spirit of the large West had entered his soul and after a stay of eight years in Ohio, he returned to Iowa and 1870 saw him again in West Liberty, established in the grocery and provision business, which he has followed for the past 23 years, though retiring from active service some time since on account of failing health. Mr. Manful was a prominent member of the Masonic Order. In his religious faith, he favored the tenets of the Christian church. He had been a lifelong member of the Republican party and always took an active interest in its success. He is survived by his wife, now in poor health and his grandson, Tom Rhoads, who has been his valuable assistant in business for a number of years. The funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Christian church in West Liberty.

Death of Mrs. S. Mansfield ----Another Old Settler Of Nichols Passes Away --- Her Life History.------ Nichols, Iowa, Sept. 28. Mrs. Fannie Mansfield has been called Home. As the evening shades of the autumn day were closing in, typifying the life of the departed one, both in the day and in the season, the long and patiently suffering invalid, was called to her eternal rest. Fannie Dean Mansfield, a native of Huntsville, Conn., died at her home in Nichols, Iowa, Sept. 27, aged 71 years, 4 months and 12 days. ------- Deceased was born in Litchfield county, Conn., May 15th, 1828. In 1845 she was united in marriage to Sidney Mansfield, a native of the same state and county, who preceded her to the “Better Land” a little more than four months ago. ------------ Nine children were born to bless their home, two of whom were laid to rest in the far-away Connecticut home, and four others have preceded the aged parents since their residence in Iowa. Three children, Mrs. Wm. Quimby, Mrs. Eva Genes, and S. N. Mansfield, all of whom reside here in Nichols, and were constantly in attendance at the bedside of the aged mother. ----------- Mrs. Mansfield, accompanied by her husband and family, came west in 1855 and settled in Pike township, this county. Here they resided for a number of years, until the failing health of the father and mother induced them to leave the farm, when they moved to Nichols, and have been residents of the village for the past twenty-five years, excepting the year 1875, when both visited their old home in the east. ---------- In 1882 she became a member of the Christian church of this place, and although for over seven years she has been an invalid confined to the house and the greater part of the time to her bed, yet never once has her faith faltered or grown less. She died as she lived, a faithful, consistent Christian, whose works and words will live long after the frail voice is hushed in silence. ------------ The faithful daughters and son who have been so doubly bereaved in so short a time have the sympathy of the entire community. The funeral services, conducted by Rev. Birch, of West Liberty, will be held at the Christian church, Friday, at 11 a. m. Interment in the Swickard Cemetery.

SIDNEY MANSFIELD DEAD ----Nichols’ Ex-Mayor and Beloved Citizen Passes to His Reward. -------- Nichols, Iowa, May 4. – Died, at his home in Nichols, Iowa, Wednesday evening, May 3rd, at 7:15 o’clock, Sidney Mansfield, aged 78 years, 11 months and 18 days. Yesterday evening our little village was suddenly saddened and quieted by the announcement that passed with a reverential solemnity from lip to lip, “Grandpa Mansfield is dead.” Even though he had lived so long in our midst and one and all have known that he was daily growing weaker and was constantly a prey to that dread malady, heart trouble, and was approaching nearer to that beautiful home for which his daily life spent in the service of his Lord and Master has most fittingly prepared him, yet to all the suddenness was new and strange.-------- Sidney Mansfield was born in Litchfield county, Ohio, on the 15th of May, 1820. In 1845 he was united in marriage to Miss Fannie Dean, also of his native State. Nine children were born of this union, two of whom were laid to rest in the far-away Connecticut home and four others have preceded the aged father since his residence here in Iowa. Three children, Mrs. Wm. Quimby, Mrs. Eva Genes and S. N. Mansfield, still survive to comfort the aged mother, who is prostrated with grief, as she is very frail and has been unable to leave her bed for some time. --------- In 1855 Mr. Mansfield and family came west and settled in Pike township, of this county, where he resided for a number of years until his health failed, when he moved to Nichols and has lived here for the past twenty-five years, with the exception of the year 1875, when his wife and himself visited their old home in Connecticut. In 1882 he united with the Christian church, of which he has been a faithful and consistent member ever since. ---------- About 1870 he became a member of the Independent Order of Good Templars and has used his influence at all times in behalf of temperance and morality. When elected mayor of Nichols in 1889, which office he held for two years and gained the commendation of all, he was instrumental in abolishing the saloons from our village. He was unable to be about for some time, but as the genial spring weather came on he was frequently seen upon the streets, invariably surrounded by the children who had learned to love him. There will be a vacancy felt in many a little heart as they watch and wait for the benevolent smile and kindly word of approval and find it not.-------- Funeral services will be held at the house tomorrow at eleven o’clock, conducted by Rev. Birch, of West Liberty, with interment in the Swickard cemetery, east of town. --------Submitter’s Note: It should read that he was born in Litchfield county, Connecticut. Also, Eva Genes should be Eva Jean.

"Rachel E. Mathes was born in Indiana on Jan 1, 1840 and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Cora Warnstaff, June 10, 1918, age 78 years, 5 months and 10 days. She made her home with her daughter and family since the death of her husband over ten years ago. She has been in failing health ever since she was married, at the age of twenty years to George W. Mathes on August 7, 1856. To this union five children were born. Margaret Reynolds of Nichols, Joseph Mathes of Oklahoma, Marion Mathes of Oklahoma, Laura who died in infancy, Cora Warnstaff of Letts, Iowa. Everything was done to aid her in her long illiness and suffering but it seemed nothing could be done. If anything was said to her she would say: It is all right, my time is close at hand when I will meet my Savior face to face, who went to prepare a place for me. She has been a noble Christian, ever since she started in her Christian life, nothing has been too hard for her to do for her Master. She leaves to mourn her loss, four children, one sister, Mrs. Belle Stonebraker, one half sister, Mrs. Susan Knott, twenty-two grandchildren, fifteen great grand children, and a host of relatives and friends who were so kind to her in her suffering. Her remains were shipped to Cone, where she was laid to rest by the side of her husband. Editor's note! (Cora died 1955, scrapbook is now in the hands of her Grandson, Paul Warnstaff). This one and the death record above seems to support one another except for the place of her birth. There are a couple other minor errors as there usually are in obituaries.

Happel with interment in Oakdale cemetery.-----FRED MAURER---A TRIBUTE---This issue of the Wilton Advocate chronicles the passing of a pioneer. We pause for a brief moment to pay our respects and a tribute to Wilton's oldest business man both in years and also years in business, Fred Maurer. Who remained in service until called. Who in the spirit of the pioneer was always ready, as he was able, to help in the building of the community. Whose name appeared in corporations for civic improvement and public service. Who in the more active years of his life gave of his time as a public servant, serving several terms as school director. Who saw his home town grow from virgin prairie to cultivated lands and finally to our present town. Who saw the coming of the rail roads, the city plant and other civic improvements. Who also saw the need of religious life in this new home. Who gave of his time and means that an altar to his God was erected and maintained. Who even now was active not only in his own business but gave of his time to the directorate of one of the community's financial corporations. A PIONEER, Passes.
