LOUIS LAFAYETTE LANE PASSES AWAY-------DIED AT 5:30 O'CLOCK THIS MORNING-------Was Born At Wooster, Ohio, and Has Resided in This City For Over 27 Years.-------At 5:30 o'clock this morning Louis Lafayette Lane breathed his last at his home, 418 Pine street, after an illness of nearly a year, the immediate cause of death being dropsy of the heart. At first he did not think seriously of his illness and about January 1st, in company with his daughter, Mildred, started for the south to spend the winter; expecting the change would be beneficial to his health. But it proved otherwise, and he was compelled to return home, and has been confined to the house ever since. In spite of the fact that everything possible to medical skill was done for his relief, he passed away this morning. He was perfectly conscious of the fact that the end was near and on Tuesday stated to his family that he would live only about another day. Mr. Lane was born June 27, 1837, at Wooster, Ohio, and moved to Canton, Illinois, with his parents when he was about eight years old. Here he resided until 1863, when he moved to Iowa, locating at Wilton, where he followed his occupation as druggist for many years. During this time he also conducted drug stores at Rock Island, Illinois and other places. About 27 years ago he came to Muscatine, and has made this city his home ever since, living a retired life. He was of a jovial disposition, and made friends of all with whom he came in contact, and his presence in the community will be greatly missed. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons and two daughters, they being Charles, of Victoria, B. C.; George of Chicago; Mrs. Guy Black, of Council Bluffs, Ia.; Miss Mildred at home, and Lyell, of Chicago. He also has two brothers, George W. Lane, of Canton, Ill.; and Dr. W. H. Lane, of Miller, S. D. Socially he was a member of the Masonic fraternity, which will probably have charge of the services. The time of the funeral has not been announced, but the remains will be taken to Wilton for burial.

After he graduated from Bennett High School, he moved to Muscatine County where he and his father and brother rented a farm. He worked on the farm until he enlisted in the United States Army. He came to Alaska from Iowa in 1946 after serving in World War II. He was a 1951 graduate of the University of Alaska Fairbanks with a degree in agriculture and later earned a master's degree in school counseling. CLAUS LEMKAU DIES SUDDENLY-------WORKED SATURDAY MORNING, DIES BEFORE SUNDAY-------Was Taken Ill Saturday Forenoon But Did Not Think it Serious---Severe Pains Attack Him-------The news of the sudden death of Claus Lemkau, who passed away Saturday night at his home, 609 Grandview avenue, at 11:00 o'clock, was a severe blow to his friends and family, none of whom even knew that he was seriously ill until the moment before he died. Mr. Lemkau was foreman of the Kaiser lumber mill and had been working Saturday morning. He became ill during the forenoon and returned home not thinking his illness a severe one at all. After dinner he retired but did not call a doctor as he did not think it necessary. Later in the evening he was taken with severe pains and died before a physician could be summoned, the cause of his death being heart failure.-------Was Born In Germany ------ Claus H. Lemkau was born in Hanover, a province of Germany, in 1853, and came to this country when he was 23 years of age. For the past 30 years he has been a resident of the United States and for most of that time has lived in Muscatine. He was known as an honest, industrious and upright man by all who knew him, and had a large number of friends in Muscatine and vicinity. In the home circle he was a kind husband and a loving and indulgent father, and his loss is a severe blow to the sorrowing family. Mr. Lemkau was a member of the German Methodist church, which by his death loses one of its most earnest and faithful members. Clothing Caught Fire --- Little Hilda Lemkau Badly Burned While Playing With Matches.---WORKMEN NEARBY SAVED HER.--- Had Severe Injuries From Which She May Not Recover---Several Children Were Playing Together When Accident Occurred.--- Little Hilda Lemkau, residing with her grandmother, Mrs. Teichmiller, in South Muscatine, barely escaped being burned to death yesterday afternoon shortly after 4 o'clock. Her clothes were nearly all burned from the body and she would probably have been burned to death had it not been for the timely assistance of workmen in a button factory nearby, who ran and caught her, tearing the clothing off her body and smothering out the fire.--- How It Happened. --- It seems that Mrs. Teichmiller was not at home when the horrible accident occurred. The little girl and some of her playmates are said to have been playing in the alley near the residence and decided that they wanted some matches. They went into the house and took a box of them and returned to their play in the alley. It seems that little Hilda, the victim, was holding the box of matches in her lap, while the others were lighting them. In some manner one of the matches in the box ignited and started the remainder. In almost an instant her clothes were on fire and the blaze was spreading rapidly. She rose to her feet and ran down the alley, screaming as she went. The flames were readily fanned by the wind.---Workmen to the Rescue. --- The scream of horror and pain from the child attracted the attention of some workmen in a button factory nearby, her uncles being among them. They immediately ran to her assistance and caught her. Her clothes, of what remained of them, were hurriedly torn from her badly burned and scorched body and the flames quickly smothered, but not before the poor little girl was burned almost to death.--- In a Critical Condition.--- In the absence of the family physician, Dr. J. L. Klein, Dr. D. P. Miller was called to administer medical aid. Dr. Klein hastened to the scene as soon as possible and cared for the unfortunate little girl. Upon examination it was learned that almost the entire front of her body was badly burned, scorched and blistered. The entire skin being a blistered condition and care had to be exercised to keep it from coming from the body. The hair was burned from the head, the face considerably scorched, but not seriously. Today the little child lies in a critical condition and the physician expresses some doubt as to her recovery, she being young and the body not sufficiently strong to cast off the poison that will be caused by the burn, owing to its extreme proportions.

Died from Injuries----- Little Hilda Lemkau Could Not Recover from Burns.----- WAS PLAYING WITH MATCHES.----- Funeral Will Be Held Saturday Afternoon---Her Mother is Dead---She Suffered Much Agony from the Severe Burns.----- Little Hilda Lemkau, who was so badly burned Wednesday evening by having her clothes catch fire while playing with a box of matches, died last night about 9 o'clock. It has been ascertained that she secured the matches from the residence of her aunt, Mrs. John Teichmiller, who lives near her grandmother. The aunt was away from home at the time of the horrible occurrance and the children took advantage of it by gaining admittance to the house. They climbed onto a box and reached the matches, which were on a high shelf. Everything that could be done to save the little child was done, but of no avail as her injuries were far too severe for her frail body to withstand and she succumbed last night, entering into that calm peaceful sleep from which there is no awakening. She had scarcely reached the age of five, being four years, ten months and nine days old, when she passed away. Her mother has been dead for two or three years. The sympathy of a large circle of friends and acquaintances is extended to the father, Claus Lemkau, in this hour of his almost crushing sorrow and bereavement. The funeral has been arranged to take place at the German M. E. chapel in South Muscatine, Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. A. H. F. Hertzler, of the German M. E. church will conduct the services.

Mary Magdelene HARSCHER, daughter of John and Catherine HARSCHER, was born in Buffalo, N. Y., Dec. 12, 1850. During her girlhood her parents moved to a farm near Grandview, Iowa. On March 16, 1875, she was united in marriage to George LEUTZINGER at Grandview, Iowa, they moved to a farm near Muscatine, Iowa, where they lived 27 years.--- To this union nine children were born, one son, George, died April 19, 1904, the remaining eight children and her husband mourn the loss of a faithful wife and a loving mother.--- John, who resides in Nebraska, Clarence, Mrs. A. G. MARTEN, Casper and Will of Cameron, Mo., Edward of Sumner, Washington, Mrs. A. C. ASLING, Lewisburg, Kas., Mrs. Homer HARTEL, Kearney, Mo. Also 19 grandchildren and one brother, George HARSCHER, Wapelo, Iowa, all of whom survive.--- In 1901, the deceased with her husband and children moved to a farm near Cameron, Mo. In 1918 they moved to Cameron, Mo., residing at 122 West Cornhill street, until she answered the final summons of her Lord and Master on Dec. 7, 1930, after an earthly pilgrimage of 79 years, 11 months, 24 days.--- She proved by the life she lived that she had a saving faith in God with whom she had made her peace and often said she was ready and willing to pass to her reward. Her religion was sufficient for this life and for the life to come. 36 days before she died she was taken sick with the flu and gradually became weaker until she was translat from the church militant to the church triumphant. She was conscious up to a couple of hours of her death, she would ask for her loved ones and they would come to her bedside which satisfied her. Her transition from this life was peaceful and calm just like her faith and peace of mind, she went to sleep physically and awoke spiritually.

“How blest the righteous when she dies
When sinks a weary soul to rest,
How mildly beam the closing eyes,
How gently heaves the expiring breast.
So fades a summer cloud away.
So sinks the gale when storms are o’er.
So gently shuts the eye of day
So dies a wave along the shore.
A holy quiet reigns around,
A calm which life nor death destroys
And naught disturbs that peace profound,
Which her unfettered soul enjoys.
Life’s labor done, as sink the clay,

Light from its load, the spirit flies,
While heaven and earth combine to say,
How blest the Righteous when she dies.”

OLDEST NATIVE RESIDENT PASSES AWAY FRIDAY A. M.------ PROF. R.W. LEVERICH SUCCUMES TO LONG ILLNESS—---BORN IN COUNTY IN 1838—---FUNERAL WILL BE HELD MONDAY------- Yesterday morning shortly before 9 o’clock occurred the death of Prof. R.W. Leverich at his home 406 chestnut Street, and in his passing the distinction of being the oldest native resident of a community passes to the shoulders of another. Prof. Leverich had been in ill health for several months, the result of the general breaking down of life’s machinery, and while his death was not unexpected it was not imminent until the patient suffered a pronounced sinking spell Thursday night and dropped into an unconsciousness from which he failed to rally. Prof. Leverich had lead an exceptionally active life and did not yield to the pressure of ill health until last fall, when he was forced to relinquish his work as head of the Leverich Normal School. Since that time he has failed steadily. And though his condition was generally known, the announcement of his death was received with distinct sorrow and is spread over an unusually large circle of acquaintances, and he was one of the best known residents of Muscatine County. Prof. Leverich was born two miles west of Wilton, on the old Muscatine-Tipton road in 1838 when it could scarcely be called more than a clearing through the timber. For a number of years he enjoyed the distinction of being the oldest native resident of Muscatine County, and few have possessed a more intimate knowledge of a county’s history than did Mr. Leverich. Born in the early pioneer days, he has watched wilderness transformed to fertile farms and thriving towns, and has been actively identified with the county’s progress since early manhood. To but very few residents of Muscatine can the unique experience of such a life, bridged from wilderness to advanced civilization fall. The years are passing, and with them the older residents and as they pass personal memories of the territorial days, hardships and privation become rare indeed.------ OLDEST TEACHER, TOO.----- Perhaps, too, his certificate to teach ante-dates that of any other resident of the county, or any other teacher. Certain it is that no other teacher now living here has followed the profession continuously, for as long a period as did Prof. Leverich. His first examination was taken before the late Judge Brannan, the first county superintendent, in 1859, and practically all of his life has been devoted to the profession of teaching, and hundreds upon hundreds of pupils bear the stamp of his instruction in this and other communities.------ EARLY SETTLERS------ Ruthven Wilson Leverich was born near Wilton, May 1, 1838, the son of Ira and Jane Leverich, who came to Iowa from New York in 1836 touching the settlement of Bloomington about the time it was incorporated as a town, and when it could boast of but few more than half a dozen buildings. This was ten years before Iowa was admitted as a state. He received his early education in a log cabin, the predominating structure in those days, and later attended Cornell College at Mt. Vernon, utilizing every opportunity that he could get or make to advance his ambition toward education. He decided early to take up teaching and as soon as possible obtained his certificate or authority to teach. Early in the seventies he was called to the Wilton schools where his successful work brought him to the attention of educators of the county and he was soon chosen county superintendent of schools, and was retained in that office for five consecutive terms, a record that stands unsurpassed in Muscatine County. He instituted many reforms while in office that proved of much benefit to the county school system and left the office in such shape that few changes in policy were needed for many years after he had retired.------ OPEN SCHOOL----- After retiring from county superintendent Prof. Leverich opened in Muscatine the Leverich Normal School, an institution created to prepare those who desired, for teaching in the city and rural schools. In this as in his other work, his efforts were rewarded with marked success. He continued this school until he retired from active work last fall.------ OBITUARY----- On December 20, 1859, Professor Leverich was married to Miss Olive Garlock, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Garlock. Of the five children born of this marriage, two survive: they are Mrs. W.L. Mull and Mrs. Frank D. Throop, both of this city. His death is also deeply mourned by his helpmate of over a half century. He is also survived by two brothers, Charles, of Montana, and Marion, of St. Louis, and two sisters, Mrs. Brigham Reed, of Orangeburg, S. C., and Mrs. John Sutherland, of St. Joseph, Mo. The funeral of the late R.W. Leverich will be held from the home 406 Chestnut Street Monday morning at 10 o’clock. Burial will be made at Greenwood Cemetery and will be private.
