Clayton Stephen James---- Clayton James was born at South Prairie, Jan. 8. 1881 and passed away at his home Nov. 10, 1944. He was aged 63 years, 9 months and 10 days. His parents were Gad and Harriet James. His father came to South Prairie direct from Wales of which Mr. James was very proud. His father, Gad, settled in the South Prairie community and established the homestead on part of which Clayton was living at the time of his death. He married Sept. 12, 1906 to Miss Bessie Heath of South Prairie. He started farming on part of the old James homestead where they built a home and lived there the rest of his life. To this union were born two children, Raymond and Dorothy, who survive him and are living in the South Prairie community. Mr. James was a good citizen and neighbor and could be depended on to do his part in any project for the benefit of the community. He was always glad to help a neighbor or friend and was a good farmer also. In his farming activities he was filling his place in the great food program of the country very well and we wonder if we know how important that is in the life of a hungry world. He was a member of the Methodist Church in West Liberty. His membership was placed here at the time of the union of the Methodist Protestant and the Methodist Episcopal churches. He was active in his work to the last day of his life although it seems he had been gradually failing in health for some time. But not sufficient to stop him in his work and therefore his sudden death was a shock to his family and friends. He was very fond of his grandchildren and when they came to his home it was a bright day indeed. Mr. James was one of a family of nine children, six brothers and three sisters. One brother died in infancy or when about two years old. Also two other brothers, Curtis and George preceded him in death. A Tribute To John Jelly------Friday morning at 1:30, Mr. J. A. Jelly, the faithful representative of the Muscatine Journal, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. McKee. Mr. Jelly had for years represented the Journal in this vicinity and no more honest and faithful man was ever attached to a newspaper. He lived for it, he worked for its success as probably no other employee on its pay rolls. His honesty and integrity was never called in question by any one to our knowledge in all the years he served that paper. His remains were laid to rest Monday. A good man has been called from our midst, whose place will be hard to fill. The funeral was in charge of the Masons, many of whom came from Atalissa to pay the last tribute to their departed brother. The services were held in the Methodist church, Rev. Corley officiating.
