Freda L. HOAG, 89, of Muscatine, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999. Services will be Saturday at the Bloomington-Muscatine Friends Church. The Rev. Arturo Carranza will officiate. Pallbearers will be Doug, Dale, David, Steve, Keith, Kevin and Dean HOAG, Debbie Paulson and Diane Gregg. Burial will be in the Bloomington-Muscatine Friends Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. ---- Mrs. HOAG was born on April 29, 1910, in Grandview, the daughter of Ralph and Lydia DIETRICH-ZIMMERMAN. She married Paul HOAG on Jan. 29, 1932, in Muscatine. He preceded her in death on July 21, 1998. --- Survivors include two sons, Walter HOAG, and his wife, Joyce, and Ralph HOAG, and his wife, Shirley; 13 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and four great great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul; a son, Paul F. HOAG, Jr.; and three sisters, Mildred WIGGERS, Nona WAGG, and Marian KEMP.

Death of an Octogenarian, Joseph D. Hoag died at the residence of his son, J.J. Hoag in Sweetland Township last evening, after a protracted illness, He was born in Chittenden Co., VT, June 2, 1800, and was therefore in the 80th year. He had been married twice, his first wife died in 1823 and his second in 1853. He formerly resided in Henry and Mahaska Counties in this state and removed to this county in 1875. These facts we find in the personal register of the history of Muscatine Co., and that is about all we know of the deceased except he was a member of the Society of Friends.

Apparently suffocated as he sought to make his way out of a burning barn at the Hoag farm 2 miles north of Muscatine on Highway 38, Paul Hoag Jr., 5, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hoag Sr., perished late Monday afternoon. His charred body was found by the lad’s father and other searchers about 4:15 when the building had subsided sufficiently to permit a search of the ruins. Paul F. Hoag was born December 18, 1933 in Dale county, Mo. and had lived in Bloomington Township for the past three years. He was affiliated with the Bloomington Friend’s church. Surviving are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul F. Hoag; six-year-old twin brothers, Ralph E. and Walter E. Hoag; two grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter E. Hoag and two great grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Edward F. Hoag, all of Bloomington Township. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Bloomington Friends church. Burial will be in the Friends cemetery.

Services will be Friday, March 22, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello. The Revs. Darryl Erickson and Brent Hall will officiate. Burial will be at the Grandview Cemetery. Mr. Hocke was born May 1, 1907, in Muscatine County, a son of George and Louise Welch Hocke. He worked as a cemetery sexton, primarily at the Grandview Cemetery, for more than 16 years. Mrs. John H. Hocke, 79, died of a heart attack Thursday at her home, 1014 Iowa avenue. --- The daughter of Henry and Mary HOUCK-LEONHARD, she was born Jan. 13, 1872, in Johnson county and had spent her life in the Muscatine community. Her marriage to John H. HOCKE took place in Muscatine on Aug. 29, 1894. --- Surviving are her husband; a twin son and daughter, Lyle J. HOCKE and Mrs. Linda FRYBERGER, both of Muscatine; on brother, Joe T. LEONHARD of Columbus Junction ; a sister, Miss Louise LEONHARD of Davenport; two grandchildren, Thomas G. Lloyd G. Hocke Of Grandview Goes in Death----- Services are planned Thursday at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home for Lloyd G. Hocke, 52, life resident of Grandview, who died suddenly of a heart attack at 8:35 p.m. Monday at his home. Burial will be at the Grandview cemetery. The son of George and Louise Welch Hocke, he was born Aug. 15, 1905, in Muscatine county. His marriage to Jennie Krahl took place Jan. 27, 1939, at Davenport. He had been employed at the Iowa Ordinance Plant, Burlington, the past five years. Survivors include his wife; a step-son, William L. RAY HOCKERSMITH, 79, dies after fall from building------- Masonic funeral services are pending at the Fairbanks chapel for Ray Hockersmith, 79 year-old Muscatine man who died Sunday night from injuries received in an accidental fall from a building which he owned in the 300 block of East Second Street. Mr. Hockersmith fell approximately 30 to 35 feet from a wooden porch on the rear of the vacant building formerly occupied by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. Mr. Hockersmith was conscious when he was found lying in the East 2nd Street parking lot, at the side of the building. He was discovered by Albert Brenner, 113 1/2 Sycamore, who immediately called the Muscatine police department. He died at 9:05 p.m. at the University hospital, Iowa City. Frank Custer, a toll-taker at the Muscatine high bridge, and his relief-man, Gene Evans, had observed Mr. Hockersmith working on the rear of the building Sunday afternoon. He had appeared to be attempting to dislodge a bird's nest with a long piece of 2" by 4" wood. They did not see him fall, but had remarked that it looked dangerous for him to be working on the wet surfaces of the porch and roof. Mr. Hockersmith, who lived at 307 East 5th St., had been a resident of Muscatine since March 2, 1928. He was born Aug. 19, 1890, at Des Moines, the son of Louis F. and Anna Stout Hockersmith. He was reared at Marshalltown. Mr. Hockersmith had been engaged in the blacksmithing and welding trade and operated the Economy Welding Shop from 1931 to 1935. He worked in a defense plant in Santa Monica, Calif., from 1941 to 1944, during World War II. Since that time he had been self-employed here in buying and selling real estate, and had acquired various income properties. Mr. Hockersmith was a member of the Masonic Order, A. F. & A. M., and was a member of the Muscatine Power Boat club. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Agnes Coleman, Van Nuys, Calif., and three grandchildren.------"MUSCATINE JOURNAL", Muscatine, Iowa, Wednesday, March 4, 1970, page 16----OBITUARIES AND FUNERALS---------RAY HOCKERSMITH----- Members of the Masonic Lodge, A. Some details of the head-on collision had not been isolated by the Muscatine police yet this morning. Hocking and Richard Jerome Hertz, 58, Belleville, Mich., both were driving the 3100 block of Grandview Avenue at 1:19 a.m. Saturday when their vehicles collided directly head on. Both men were dead at the scene... ...Services for Mr. Hocking will be held Tuesday at the Church of the Living Water. Pastor Mark Anderson will officiate. A private burial service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery. The son of Fred and Eugenia Boynton Hocking Sr., he was born Oct. 14, 1952, in Muscatine. He was a life resident of the Muscatine area. He was a 1970 graduate of Muscatine High School and attended Muscatine Community College. His marriage to Jennifer Ann Freemole took place Aug. 21, 1976, in Muscatine. He was part of the fellowship of the Church of the Living Water. He was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout and a member of the DeMolay and the YMCA. Mr. Hocking worked at HON industries and played in several bands. He is survived by his wife; his parents of Muscatine; two brothers, Fred. Jr. and Torrence, Calif., and Guy of Las Cruces, N.M.; and one sister, Ann Heckman of Ruidosa, N.M. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Fred G. Hocking Sr.------ Fred G. Hocking Sr., 73, 3 Wilson Drive, died Sunday at St. Lukes' Hospital, Davenport, following an extended illness. A memorial service will be Saturday at the Church of the Living Water with William H. Gray officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Academy of Christian Education or the Stephen Gerald Memorial fund. Mr. Hocking was born Sept. 5, 1915 in Lancaster County, Pa., the son of John Doble and Maude Gervin Hocking. After his father's death, he was placed in the Stephen Gerard College, an orphanage with an excellent academic and finishing program. He graduated in 1933 at the age of 17. He graduated from Franklin Marshall College in Lancaster in 1937, Phi Beta Kappa, with a degree in accounting. Following graduation, he worked for General Electric Company in New York state for 10 years, becoming a department head in finance. In 1938 he married Doris Ebie in Paradise, Pa. The couple had three children, Fred Jr., Guy and Ann. She preceded him in death in 1950. He came to Muscatine in 1946 to assist in establishing the finance department at Grain Processing Corporation. He worked for GPC until his retirement in 1976 and was executive vice president of finance, planning and development. He also served on the board of directors of GPC. In 1951 he married Eugenia Boynton in Muscatine. The couple had one son, John D., who was killed in an auto accident in 1981. He was a member of the Church of the Living Water, a member and past president of the Geneva Golf and Country Club, Elks Lodge No. 304, Triune Lodge No. 641, Davenport Consistory in which he was a 32-degree Mason, and a member of the 33 club. Mr. Hocking also served on the board of directors of Northern Gravel Company and was employed there after his retirement from GPC. He also belonged to the YMCA where he served on the board of directors and was a past president. He participated in Boy Scouts as a member of the board of directors and as a leader and advisor. He opened his home to missionaries from all over the world. His hobbies included geology, golf, bridge, tennis, gardening and deep sea fishing from his home in Palm Beach, Fla. He also collected Indian artifacts. Survivors include his wife, Eugenia; two sons, Fred G. Jr. of Seal Beach, Calif. and Guy E. of Cerritos, Calif.; one daughter, Ann Heckman of Placitas, N.M.; four grandchildren; one brother, John G. of Venice, Fla.; and one sister, Marian Herbert of Dover, Del. His parents and two brothers also precede him in death.

MRS. HARRIET HOEFER IS CALLED BY DEATH-------WAS A RESIDENT OF MUSCATINE 50 YEARS-------Funeral Will Be Held Tomorrow Afternoon At The United Brethren Church.-------Mrs. Harriet Hoefer, a resident of this city for more than 50 years, passed away about 7 o'clock last evening at the home of her niece, Mrs. J. H. Webb, 418 Walnut street, following an extended illness. A stroke of paralysis influenced by senility, is assigned as the cause of the demise. Harriet L. Chenoweth was born in Ohio, September 2, 1840. She was united with Madison Chapman, October 6, 1857. Mr. Chapman died about ten years later and in 1876 she was united with William Hoefer. She was a member of the United Brethren church and also a member of the W. R. C. and Eastern Star lodge. She is survived by three children, E. F. Chapman, of Ashton, Illinois; Mrs. Luella Moel, of Missouri, and Mrs. Nettie Gibson, of Dixon, Illinois. Two brothers, William Chenoweth, of Ottowa, Ohio, and Samuel Chenoweth, of Newberg, Iowa; and one sister, Mrs. Sarah E. Lewis, of Piketon, Ohio, also mourn her demise. According to present arrangements the funeral will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the United Brethren church. The Rev. C. L. Young will officiate. Interment will be made in Greenwood cemetery.

RESIDENT NO MORE-------William A. Hoefer, ill Long Time, Died at Home Saturday Evening.-------LIVED ON OREGON STREET-------Deceased Born In Germany in 1830----- Citizen of Muscatine Since 1864-------Employe of Musser Lumber Company for 33 Years-------William Hoefer, one of the pioneer residents of South Muscatine, died Saturday evening at 8:30 o'clock from congestion of the liver, at his home, 1009 Oregon street, at the age of 74 years. He had been ailing the past 14 months, and gradually grew weaker until Saturday, when he passed away. Mr. Hoefer remembered when it took seven weeks to cross the ocean, when wood was hauled with oxen and when the Musser Lumber Company was an infant industry. He was born in Coblenz, near the River Rhine, in 1830. In 1857 he came to New York City, having been on the ocean seven weeks. From New York he removed to Davenport and while there became a dairyman. St. Louis was his next home but only for a year, when he again returned to Davenport. Here he fell sick and was kindly cared for by a farmer in the vicinity of that place. After he gained his strength he worked for his past board and care with a will. During the winter of 1859, Mr. Hoefer hauled wood to Davenport, where Captain Arnold, a pioneer riverman of this city, loaded it and brought it to Muscatine on barges. A farm hand was his next occupation and this in the employ of Arthur Robertson, of Rock Island county, Illinois. After a stay of two years, he married the daughter of Mr. Robertson, Miss Martha Robertson in 1864. Here he remained until 1867, when husband and wife came to Muscatine. In Muscatine he became a wagon-maker with W. Ament. His wife died September 11, 1873. In 1876 he married Mrs. Hattie Chapman. Since 1870 he lived at his late home on Oregon street and had been a faithful employe of the Musser Lumber company until the last 14 months. His wife and one daughter, Mrs. W. W. Wood, of Oklahoma, are the only relatives who survive him. The funeral services were held from the United Brethren church this afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. W. I. Beatty. Interment was made in Greenwood cemetery. The pall bearers were John Kendig, Charles Washburn, Owen Smith, Robert Carter, Benjamin Washburn, and Charles Ward.

George M. HOEFFLIN, 73, a former resident of Muscatine, died in California, according to word received here today by his brother, Police Judge Nathan HOEFFLIN. --- George M. HOEFFLIN was born in Muscatine May 19, 1881. He operated a harness and shoe repair shop in the 200 block on Walnut street. He also worked for the H. J. Heinz Co. for many years. --- He married Stella HAIN Oct. 7, 1903. In recent years, he had made his home with a son, Kenneth HOEFFLIN, in Moline. Death occurred while he was spending the winter with relatives in California. --- Survivors, besides the Muscatine brother, include two sisters, Mrs. Emil BLAESING, Rockford, Ill., and Ella F. HOEFFLIN Muscatine. It is expected the body will be returned here for burial.

DEATH CAME SUDDENLY.---Mrs. John G. Hoehl Called Hence Unexpectedly at Her Home Sunday Morning by Heart Failure.-----The many friends of Mrs. John G. Hoehl were deeply pained Sunday morning to learn that she had suddenly expired and answered the final summons. She was about on Saturday evening, apparently more cheerful than ever, arose Sabbath morning at six o'clock, as usual, feeling well, but shortly thereafter she complained of a pressure over her heart, and in less than an hour she had passed away. Deceased was born in Kroegelstein, Bavaria, Germany, March 31st, 1821, and was consequently in her 78th year. She came to America with her husband in 1852, coming direct to Muscatine, where she resided up to the time of her death. She was a quiet, neighborly neighbor, a faithful wife and companion, and a good mother and friend. She was for years a faithful member of the German Evangelical church and also of the Ladies' Aid Society of that church. Catherine Hoehl was the mother of eight children, four of whom, with her husband, have preceded her in death, the surviving children being Mrs. Herman Schmidt, John Hoehl, John L. Hoehl and Mrs. Wm. Molis, the two sons being residents of Kansas City. John L. arrived from Kansas City this morning, but John cannot come, being on the road and in western Colorado. Obituaries---- Fred Hoffman---- Fred J. Hoffman, 90, 2012 Oneida Ave., died Monday evening at his home. Services will be held Thursday at St. Mary's Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. The son of George and Mary Windinger Hoffman, he was born April 17, 1893, in Muscatine. He was a life resident of this community. His marriage to Hilda Albresch took place Sept. 20, 1926. He was a veteran of World War I, having served with the U. S. Army. He was a member of St. Mary's Church and the American Legion. Mr. Hoffman had been employed as a button cutter and was later custodian at the post office, retiring 25 years ago. Survivors include one son, Hilfred John of Wanamacker, Ind.; two daughters, Mrs. Harold (June) Dallas of Keokuk and Mrs. John (Beverly) Weber of Muscatine; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and nine great great grandchildren. Mrs. Fredericka Hoffman, of the oldest inmates in point of years spent at the home, died at the Lutheran Old People's home on the Burlington road at 7 o'clock Tuesday evening. Mrs. Hoffman has been in poor health for about six months become serious until several days ago. --- Mrs. Hoffman was born in Germany, Oct. 24, I860, the daughter of Henry and Christiana Heiter Sleischmann. She came to the United States in 1887. She was married, April 22, 18S9, to Ludwig Hoffman and he died at the Lutheran home, Sept, 19, 1921. --- Mr. and Mrs. Hoffman entered the home Dec. 11, 1911, coming here from Chicago. Surviving is a daughter Mrs. Anna Johnson of Chicago when Mrs. Hoffman visited recently. Funeral services will be conducted at the home at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon by the Rev. William Klein. Burial will be in the home cemetery. Heart Ailment Proves Fatal To Mrs. Hoffman, 54---- Mrs. Fred Hoffman, 54, died suddenly Sunday morning at 2:15 of a heart attack suffered at her home, 512 Oneida avenue. She had been a resident of Muscatine for the past 25 years. Mrs. Hilda Hoffman was born June 11, 1894, in Dubuque and was married to Fred Hoffman on Sept. 6, 1920 at LaCrosse, Wis. They moved to Muscatine in 1923 and have lived here continuously since that time. She was a member of St. Mary's church of Muscatine. Surviving are her husband, her mother, Mrs. Louisa Albresch of Dubuque, one son, Hilfred at home; four daughters, Beverly Hoffman at home, Mrs. Alice West and Mrs. June Dallas of Keokuk and Mrs. Gladys Stephens of Rock Island; two brothers, Jacob and George Albresch of Dubuque, three sisters, Mrs. Linda Ruh and Miss Dorothy Albresch of Dubuque and Mrs. Emma Butner of Harrington, Kas., and ten grandchildren. Ludwig Carl Hoffman, 83, died at the Lutheran Old People's home on the Burlington road shortly afternoon today following an illness of several months. He was a native of Germany and was born July 29, 1839. After coming to America he spent a number of years in Chicago but has been an inmate of the home where he died for the past nine years. He is survived by his wife who also is at the Old People's home. Definite funeral arrangements have yet be made but it is probable that the remains will be taken to Chicago for burial. ----- Submitters’ note: Burial was made at Lutheran Homes Cemetery.

Adam Hohendadel died April 19, 1902 at his residence near Grandview, Ia. He was born in Germany in Hessen-Darmstadt county, on February 12th 1818, being 84 years, 2 months and 7 days. --- He and family of wife and one child, came from Germany to Pennsylvania in 1845 and located on the home place near Grandview, Ia., in 1864 where he lived and died. He leaves four children living, Mrs. N. Grosjean and Jacob Hohenadel, who live near the home place, Mrs. Annie McFadon who lives at the home and Mrs. Maggie Grimm, who lives in Muscatine. Twelve grand-children and six great-grand-children are still living. Services were held at the home by Father Grieser of Muscatine and remains interred in the Catholic cemetery in Seventy-Six township. ------------Submitter’s note: It is quite confusing but the date of death carved on his marker is Apr 19, 1892. Her marriage to Wiliam Holliday occurred here 46 years ago. Mr. Holliday preceded her in death. --- Surviving are three children, Mrs. Edna Brandau Clyde and Hilbert H. Frank Hollingsworth----- MUSCATINE, Iowa - Frank E. Hollingsworth, 77, Muscatine, died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, at Lutheran Homes. The Rev. James Trosen will officiate the services. Inurnment will be at Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites by the combined units of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1565 and the American Legion Post 27. Mr. Hollingsworth was born Feb. 24, 1928, in Oklahoma City, Okla. He married Pat L. McGlothlen on Feb. 24, 1951, in Muscatine. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945. He was assigned to the USS LCI 605 and then the USS Carbonero and became a 3rd class torpedo man. He was awarded the World War II American Area Campaign Medal, the Philippine Area Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the China Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1949. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 53 years and became a 32nd degree mason. He was also a member of the American Legion. He was a motorcycle enthusiast and journeyed many miles riding with family and friends. He enjoyed photography, taking pictures of family, friends and pets. He also enjoyed traveling to many places with his wife. He was employed at Muscatine Power and Water for 16 years and Eastern Iowa Light and Power for 23 years. Survivors include two sons, James Hollingsworth and fiancée Teresa Thomas of Cedar Rapids and Matthew Hollingsworth and wife Kathleen of rural Atalissa; two grandsons, Isaac Hollingsworth and wife Katherine of Wilton and Spc. AGED RESIDENT OF HOME PASSES AWAY - Carl Holm, one of the oldest inmates of the German Lutheran Old Folk's Home west of this city, passed away at 6 o'clock last evening following an extended illness. His death was due to senility and while he was ill still his demise was unexpected. Since his advent to the Home in 1907 he has been in a very feeble condition and was bedfast for the greater part of the time. He was born in Germany on January 13, 1826, and came to the local institution on September 12, 1907, from Verona, Wis. The funeral will be held at 10 o'clock tomorrow from the Home with interment at the homes there.------------------ Muscatine Journal Thursday Dec. 9, 1909 ------ Carl Holm, the aged inmate of the Lutheran Old People's Home west of this city, who died Tuesday evening, was buried this morning in the cemetery at the institution. The funeral was held at 10 o'clock in the chapel.

Mrs. Carrie May GIPPLE-HOLTZ, 91, died Friday at the home of a son in Sweetland township. She was born March 1, 1863, in Louisa county, being a daughter of George and Mary BROOKS-GIPPLE. She was married to John O. HOLTZ Dec. 27, 1882 in Louisa county. She had been a resident of Sweetland township for more than 70 years and a member of Sweetland Methodist church. --- Surviving are a son, John William HOLTZ of Sweetland township; five grandsons, Clarence HOTZ, Herbert HOLTZ, John HOLTZ and Edward HOLTZ, all of Sweetland township, and Ernest Holtz of Rockford, Ill. Eleven great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers and three sisters. --- Funeral rites will be Monday at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral home. Fred G. Holtz----- Fred G. Holtz, a lifelong resident of Muscatine county died at his home in Sweetland township shortly after 4 o'clock this morning. Heart trouble and high blood pressure caused his death. He was 60 years old. He had been in ailing health all summer but his condition was not considered serious until yesterday morning. Fred G. Holtz was born in Sweetland township, December 10, 1858, and during his entire life resided in Muscatine county. He married Miss Laura Welsch, June 13, 1889, and to this union two children were born, Mrs. Mary Davis, now residing in Montana, and Elizabeth, who died in infancy. Mrs. Holtz passed away February 24, 1894. Mr. Holtz married Miss Kate Brei, on September 12, 1894, and to this union three children were born, who with the wife survive. The children are Howard Frederick, Violet Elizabeth and Grace Alice, all at home. Three brothers, J. O. Holtz, H. A. Holtz and C. S. Holtz all of Sweetland and three sisters, Mrs. August Pantel of Sweetland, Mrs. Mary Weihauser, and Mrs. France Pantel of Muscatine, also survive. Funeral services will be conducted from the Sweetland Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. P. B. Gray to have charge of services. Burial will be made in the Harker cemetery.

Pneumonia Fatal to Henry Holtz--Longtime Sweetland Resident Succumbs to Brief Illness at Home.---Henry A. Holtz, 79, long-time resident of Sweetland township, died at 9:30 p.m. Sunday after being ill six days with pneumonia. Mr. Holtz was born Dec. 29, 1856 in Towake, Erie county, New York, coming to Sweetland township with his parents when he was only six months old. He married Miss Nannie Daniel at Letts Oct. 22, 1885. Mr. and Mrs. Holtz celebrated their golden wedding-anniversary last year. He had been a worker in the Sweetland Methodist Episcopal church for many years. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Nannie Holtz, a daughter, Mrs. Bessie Wickey of Cedar Rapids, two sons, Roy of Muscatine, and Ray of Sweetland, a brother, Charles Holtz of Sweetland and two sisters, Mrs. William Weierhauser and Mrs. Francis Pantel, both of Muscatine, four grandchildren and one great grandchild. A son and daughter died in infancy. Because Mrs. Holtz is ill with pneumonia, services will be held Wednesday and will be private. The body is at the home. Burial will be in Harker cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Walnut Park Baptist Church Missionary Fund or Unity Hospice. Mr. Holtz was born June 1, 1917, in Muscatine, the son of John W. and Gertrude L. Sywassink Holtz. He married Ruby F. Warnstaff Feb. 8, 1944, in Muscatine. He was a life long resident of the Muscatine area. He was a member of Walnut Park Baptist Church, where he was a Deacon, Sunday school teacher and superintendent. He farmed all of his life. He was a member of the Eastern Iowa Poultry Association since 1953 and would show Silver Laced Wyandottes in Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Texas, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas and Iowa. He would ship his birds all over Canada, Puerto Rico and the United States. He was an inspector for ASCS for 25 years. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife; a son, Gary W. Holtz and wife Betty of Fairborn, Ohio; a daughter, Bonnie K. Paul and husband Garry of Muscatine; a brother, Ernest C. Holtz of Rockford, Ill.; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Clarence, John and Edward Holtz.

Mrs. Holtz was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. Surviving are one son, Howard Holtz, of the United States Army, overseas, two daughters, Mrs. Donald Seller and Mrs. George Opel, both of Muscatine; two brothers, George and Henry Brei, Sweetland township; two sisters, Mrs. Jacob Starke and Mrs. Minnie Leonard, Muscatine; four grandchildren. Mrs. Holtz resided at 114 1/2 East Second street and had been at the nursing home since Oct. 6. The services will be Tuesday at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home with the Rev. Lester W. Moore of the North Methodist parish in charge. Burial will be in the Harker cemetery. Mrs. Holtz was born Oct. 4, 1863, in Vermillion county, Ill., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eastridge Daniel. She had been a resident here 76 years. Her marriage to Henry A. Holtz took place Oct. 22, 1885, at Letts. She was baptized in the Christian faith and attended the Sweetland Methodist church while living in Sweetland township and attended the Walnut street Baptist church while a resident of Muscatine. Survivors include two sons, Roy Holtz of Muscatine and Ray Holtz, of Sweetland township; one daughter, Mrs. Bessie M. Wickey of Muscatine, four grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He enjoyed playing golf and cards on Tuesday nights with his buddies. He loved playing with his dog, Oakley, gardening flowers, pheasant hunting, traveling, was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and loved spending time with his grandchildren. She moved here with her family about two months ago, but during her brief time in the city won a large number of friends who will mourn her death. Mrs. T. Honts was born in Louisa county, 1886, August 18. She is survived by her husband, Theodore Honts, and two children, Elmer and Elizabeth. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and of the G.A.R. Surviving, besides his wife, are five sons and one daughter. Albert, of Wisconsin; Francis, Jesse, Robert and David, of Muscatine, and Mrs. Eugene Metzger, of Winfield, Ia. Four sons and one daughter preceded him in death. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services have not been arranged.------On page 10 of the Muscatine Journal and News-Tribune, Monday, August 8, 1927 is the funeral arrangements for J. E. Honts----Funeral services for J. E. Miss Bessie HOOPES, 89, died Sunday at the Hershey Convalescent home. Miss HOOPES was the first Secretary of the YWCA in Muscatine. She had spent many years in “Y” work, and as a Methodist missionary in the Carolinas. She was born Jan. 15, 1873, in Dallas county, Ia. Miss HOOPES had never married. She had made her home since 1939 at the Julia Elizabeth Home, Muscatine. Mrs. Cornelia L. HOOPES, 89, died Sunday a the Foster nursing home on West Third street. The daughter of Joshia C. and Phoeba CHAPMAN-HITCHCOCK, she was born in Lake township Feb. 25, 1865, and was a life-long resident of Muscatine county. --- She was married to John A. HOOPES Dec. 1897, at Muscatine. Mrs. HOOPES attended Valparaiso academy at Valparaiso, Ink., where she received training as a school teacher. She taught in Wilton township for a few years before going to Elgin, Ill., to continue her teaching work there. She was a teacher in schools in the Chicago vicinity for seven years.--- Surviving are three sons, Leslie W. HOOPES, Montebello, Calif., J. Wendell HOOPES, route 5, and Ernest W. HOOPES, Muscatine; a step-son, Clarence B. HOOPES, Muscatine; seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.--- Mrs. HOOPES was preceded in death by her husband on Dec. 13, 1928. Also preceding her in death were her parents, three sisters and a brother. --- Funeral services will be held at Wednesday in the chapel of the Fairbanks Home for Funerals. Burial will be in the High Prairie cemetery.

Rites for Mrs. Cornelia L. Hoopes, 89, who died Sunday at the Foster Nursing Home, were held today from the Fairbanks chapel. The Rev. Lester Moore was in charge. Those serving as flower attendants included Mrs. Mary Walts, Mrs. Charles Harbaugh and Mrs. B. H. Hitchcock. Casket bearers were Lee Riggs, Bion Hitchcock, Clyde Minder, Levi Eichelberger, Lindley Hoopes and Fred Hoopes. Interment was at the High Prairie cemetery.

At 5:30 o’clock last evening occurred the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Hoopes at the home of her son, Thomas J. Hoopes, in Lake Township. She had been confined to her bed for the past week with feebleness. Death was attributed to senility. She was 81 years of age and was born in Pennsylvania not far from Philadelphia. She is survived by 4 sons, Pratt of Philadelphia; Thomas J. of Lake Township; Walker of Union Co., and Ellis, a volunteer in the 51st Iowa now at Manila. The funeral will be held from the house on Monday morning, February 18th at 10 o’clock and the body will be laid to rest in the Friends cemetery in Bloomington Township.

Fred Hoopes------ Fred W. Hoopes, 77, Rt. 1, Box 82, Letts, died Wednesday evening [March 31, 1982] at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn. Services will be held Saturday at the Musserville United Methodist Church. Pastor Don Strauch will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation is at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home, where a memorial fund has been established. The son of Fred P. and Nellie Kendig Hoopes, he was born Nov. 11, 1904, in Muscatine. He was a life resident of this area. His marriage to Grace Gertenbach took place July 8, 1933, in Chicago, Ill. He was a member of the Musserville United Methodist Church and the Elks Lodge No. 304. Mr. Hoopes was a retired farmer and vegetable grower on the Muscatine Island. Survivors include his wife; three sons, John, James and Fred Robert, all of Muscatine; one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Sandra) Morse of Des Moines; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Mrs. Freeman McClelland of Cedar Rapids. One sister preceded him in death.

His marriage to Gladys Vinton took place Dec. 18, 1965 at Moline. He was a member of High Prairie Methodist Church, A.F. and A.M. Triangular No. 245 of Letts, Elks Lodge No. 304, Kaaba Shrine and Zarapeth Consistory of Davenport. Mrs. Ernest W. (Ruth E.) Hoopes, 54, of 1014 Sycamore St., died this morning at Muscatine General hospital after an extended illness.--- She was born Sept. 4, 1906, at Sibley, Ia., the daughter, of’ Scott and Bena Sietsema Marshall. She was married Dec. 25, 1928, at Sibley to Ernest W. Hoopes of Muscatine. --- Mrs. Hoopes was a graduate of Iowa State University, and taught school at Ashton until her marriage to Mr. Hoopes. She was a member of the High Prairie Methodist church. She was active in Women's work of the Farm Bureau. She was a girls' 4-H leader and was named as an honorary 4-H member for her outstanding service and leadership. Survivors include her husband Ernest W. Hoopes; two sons, Noel of Muscatine, and David of. For Monmouth, N. J. and two grandchildren, Diane and Scott Hoopes. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one brother. --- Funeral services will be held Friday at the Fairbanks Home for Funerals. -------------- “Muscatine Journal and News – Tribune”, Friday, September 9, 1960 pg 8----------- Funeral services for Mrs. Ernest W.(Ruth E.) William J. HOOPES, 50, of 1110 Halstead street, was dead on arrival at Muscatine General hospital about Friday after suffering a heart attack in a car on East Sixth street. Coroner Ralph Figg was advised of the death, but said there will be no inquest. --- Services will be held Tuesday at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home. --- A son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank HOOPES, he was born in Muscatine on June 25, 1907. He spent his entire life here. Mr. HOOPES was employed at the Bedix Corp., Davenport. One sister, Mrs. Alfred FAAS, Downey, survives. His parents preceded him in death. --------- -----(written in pencil; July 82, 1957)----- Funeral services for William J. HOOPES were conducted today at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral home by the Rev. Stanley Kennedy of the Park Avenue Methodist church. Burial was at Greenwood cemetery. Miss S. L. Horton----Notice of the death of Miss S. L. Horton, former resident of Muscatine, at her home, Seabright, Calif., has been received here by her niece, Mrs. J. M. Brockaway, 2200 Maple Grove road. Miss Horton was born in Goshen, Grange county, New York, but came to Muscatine at an early age with her parents, early settlers here. She had made her home in California for the past 10 years. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal church in Muscatine. Accompanted by a niece, Miss Bertha C. Horton of Seabright and two nephews, J. Lisle Horton, Sheridan, Wyo., and Clarence O. Horton, Buffalo, Wyo., the body will arrive here Friday afternoon. Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel at Greenwood cemetery at 5 o'clock Friday afternoon. It is the request of the family that no flowers be sent.

Mrs. Stephen M. Hoskins Dies at Moscow Township Home. Rites Monday. – Mrs. Stephen M. Hospkins, 80, resident of Muscatine county for nearly 75 year, died at her home in Moscow township early this morning. Complications resulting from advance age caused her death. --- Anna Elizabeth Fishburn, youngest child of Joshua and Margaret Fishburn, was born in Comberland county, Pa., Nov. 24, 1848. She attained the age of 80 years, 7 months and 20 days. When a child of 6 years she came with her parents to Iowa and settled on a farm in Bloomington township. She attended the Shiloh country school and later continued her studies at the seminary at Wilton. She became a teacher in the country schools at Shiloh, her own school, and at No. 4 (?) school in Moscow township. Mrs. Hoskins, often told of attending the Iowa state fair when it was held in this city, years ago. --- She was married to Stephen M. Hoskins, Dec. 24, 1874, the Rev. Mr. Jensis, then pastor of the North Prairie Methodist church, performing the marriage. In her youth she was a member of the United Bretheren faith, but later transferred to the North Prairie Methodist church, retaining membership there through out her life. --- Mrs. Hoskins’ grandfather, a Revolutionary war soldier, served with General Washington at Valley Forge. Her husband was in service in the Civil war. --- Funeral Monday. --- The survivors are two children, J. J. Hoskins of Wilton and Margaret Hoskins Smith of Moscow Township, and a brother, William H. Fishburn of Muscatine. Eight grandchildren also survive, Leone Florence and Betty Hoskins, Charlotte Morris, Kermit, Virginia and Janet Smith. --- Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon from the old Hoskins home, in Moscow township. The Rev. A. W. McBlain of the Wilton Methodist Episcopal Church will be in charge.

She was born June 6, 1885 at Northville S.D. the daughter of the late Charles and Mary Moriarty Henderson. She was a life long resident of West Liberty. Mary Hoskins married Joshua J. Hoskins November 30, 1904 in Muscatine County. She was a member of the West Liberty Methodist Church. Survivors are, her husband J.J. Hoskins; three daughters, Mrs. Donald (Leone) Foley of Cranston IA; Mrs. Clair (Florence) Jean of West Liberty; and Mrs. Gordon (Betty) Roers of Muscatine; two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Whitmer of Muscatine and Mrs. Edith Nicholaus of West Liberty; 9 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son; three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 P.M. at Gill Memorial Home with Rev. I.G. Wilkins officiating. Burial will be at the Oakdale Cemetery.

Evelyn Hotz----- GREELEY, Colo. -- Evelyn E. Hotz, 84, Greeley, formerly of West Liberty, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, in Greeley. The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty, is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Hotz was born June 7, 1920, in Durant, the daughter of Ben and Emma Davis. She married William J. Hotz March 26, 1940. She and her husband farmed west of West Liberty near the South Prairie Grange for many years. Then later moved into West Liberty. She was a member of St Joseph's Altar and Rosary Society, and a 4-H leader. She was a loving and devoted wife; she dearly loved her family, grandkids, great-grandkids and friends. She also enjoyed travel, sewing, baking cakes, fishing, playing cards and cruises. In 1996, she moved to Greeley, where she was a member of St Mary's Catholic Church. Survivors include a daughter, Debra Dennert and husband Jim of Des Moines; a granddaughter, Molly Dennert of Des Moines; a grandson, Ben Dennert of Iowa City; a son, Dennis Hotz of Greeley; a daughter-in law, Judy Hotz, Greeley; granddaughter, Jody Willier and husband Barry Willier, granddaughters, Megan and Emily Willier and grandson, Logan Willier, all of Eaton, Colo., granddaughter, Jennifer Castleberry and husband Mel Castleberry, grandson, Kade Burke, and granddaughters, Brittany and Stephany Castleberry, all of Castle Rock, Colo., granddaughter, Jary Burke and husband Scott, grandsons, Kendrik and Tyler Burke, all of Colorado Springs, Colo. Burial will be at the Lone Tree Cemetery. Mrs. Hotz was born Nov. 21, 1925, in Solon, the daughter of Matthew and Tillie Sonka Klouda. She married Raymond Louis Hotz Nov. 21, 1944, in Solon. She went to Stone Academy near Solon and attended Solon High School. She was a homemaker and helped out on the family farm. She was a member of St. Mary's Church, Lone Tree, and the Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, cooking, baking and working on the farm. Milton J. House------- Moscow, Iowa - Services will be held Monday at the Lacock Funeral Home, Wilton, Iowa for Milton J. House, age 97, of Moscow. He died Friday, March 1, 1991 at the Simpson Memorial Home, West Liberty, IA. where he had been admitted earlier that same morning. Burial will be in the Moscow Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Sarah of Moscow, and his three daughters; Mrs Opal ( Fred ) Gruemmer, Durant; Mrs Alta ( William ) Buennig, Davenport and Mrs Ruby ( Alfred ) Webb of Newell, West Virginia. Milton " Milt " Jackson House was born November 30, 1893 at Downey, Iowa. The son of Thomas, Sr and Nellie May ( Comstock ) House. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Edith ( Mrs Henry ) Klaes in 1944, and his two brothers, Nathan Jan. 20, 1969 and Thomas Jr. April 26, 1970. He was an Infantry soldier in World War 1 and served on the front line combat in France. He married Sarah Jane Collison July 9, 1919. He worked on the Rock Island railroad for some time and became the postmaster at Moscow in 1923. He and his wife owned and operated a General Merchandise and Feed Store in Moscow for nearly 50 years. He was also the town barber. He served as Grand Marshall during the Moscow Centennial celebration July of 1986. He enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Moscow Fox Hunters Club and an active member of the Wilton American Legion. He will be greatly missed by many who have called him "friend".

Utting HOUSEMAN, aged 78 years, a lifelong resident of Muscatine county, died at his home, 303 East Second street today. The son of Utting and Rebecca TOYNE-HOUSEMAN, he was born in Lake Township on Feb. 26, 1874, and retired from farming several years ago. Several nieces and nephews survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and three brothers. Services will be at the Geo. M. MRS. A. C. HOUSER HAS PASSED AWAY--- WELL KNOWN WOMAN IS VICTIM OF HEART DISEASE.--- Death Which Occurred at 7 O’clock This Morning Was Very Sudden and Unexpected.--- Mrs. A. C. Houser, a well known resident of Muscatine, passed away very suddenly at her home on Houser street about 7 o'clock this morning. During the past week she had enjoyed her usual health and had not suffered in any manner, there being no intimation of her early demise. She was stricken while in bed and passed away shortly afterward. Mrs. Houser had been a resident of this locality since the fifties and during her long residence cultivated the acquaintance of a large number of intimate friends who, like the members of her family, were greatly shocked today to hear of the sudden departure. --- Mrs. Houser was born in Maryland and was 79 years of age on last Thursday. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and during her life, her dally actions were consistent with her religious belief. Her husband preceded her in death 25 years ago. She is survived by six children, who are: J. W. Houser of Glenderoft, New Mexico; Mrs. Paul Shepard, of Danaud, Fla.; Mrs. Addie Heselton, of Dover, Delaware; Morgan Houser, of Mulberry avenue; Miss Kate at home and Mrs. Bessie Parks, of 1017 Cedar street. No arrangements have been made for the funeral as yet.

George Houvenagle, a native of Muscatine County, died at 10:30 o’clock Wednesday night at the home of his son, Stuart Houvenagle, 404 Park Ave. Two strokes of paralysis, the first suffered about four months ago, caused his death. He was 67 years old. He was born November 7, 1854 in Montpelier township, Muscatine County for many years he made his home with his son A.C. Houvenagle near Atalissa. He married Miss Belle Chatterton about forty thee years ago to which union three children were born. His wife preceded him in death in 1907. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Louis Purcell of Bolivar, Mo.; two sons, A.C. Houvenagle of near Atalissa and Stuart of Muscatine; one sister, Mrs. Henry Drumm of Durant and two brothers, Fred Houvenagle of Melpine and Louis of Newburg, IA. Funeral service will be held at 1 o’clock Saturday afternoon from the home. Burial will be made in the Friends cemetery in Bloomington Township.

Mrs. George Houvenagle passed away at her home in Bloomington Township at 9:45 last evening. She was in the 53 year of her age and death was due to heart trouble with which she has been afflicted for the past year. Besides her husband, she is survived by three children, four brothers and one sister. The children are Alfred, Stewart, and Minnie. The others are: Charles and Peter in Chicasha, Indian Territory; Guy in Cer?ent, Oklahoma; Henry of Montpelier Township and Minnie Chatterton of Bloomington Township. Deceased was born in Montpelier Township June 22, 1853 and during the greater part of her life made her home there. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Bloomington Township church; where Rev. Mrs. Commons will have charge of the service.

Mrs. Howard, 64, Native of Drury Township, Called -------------- Mrs. Sarah Ella Howard, 64, of 1005 Nebraska street, died at her home at 8:25 p.m. Monday after an illness of one week with complications. Mrs. Howard was born in Drury township, Rock Island county, April 25, 1873, residing in that community until 11 years ago when she moved to Muscatine. She was married to James H. Howard on Dec. 28, 1892 at Muscatine. Mrs. Howard attended the Illinois City Methodist Episcopal church. Surviving are her husband and the following children; Stella Bartlett of Muscatine; Chester Howard of Muscatine, Forrest Howard of Detroit, Mich., Lettie Newcomb of Muscatine; Russell Howard and Dorothy Colberg of this city. Three children and three grandchildren preceded her in death. Two brothers and two sisters also survive, Albert Cunningham of Howard County, Iowa, Martin Cunningham of Muscatine; Roxie Davidson of Muscatine and Effie Taylor of Howard county, Eighteen grandchildren also survive. The body is at the Hoffman Funeral home and rites will be held there Thursday followed by services at the Illinois City Methodist Episcopal church, the Rev. Caleb Larson of the Grandview Community church and the Rev. H. D. Simmons of Illinois will be in charge. Burial will be in the Illinois City cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home.

Mrs. Thelma B. Howard, 61, 1412 Nebraska St., died at 5 a.m. today at her home from a heart ailment after an illness of several months. Funeral services will be held Thursday at the Geo. M. Wittich funeral home. Burial will be in the Illinois City cemetery. Born Sept. 12, 1911, at Rock Island, Thelma Martin was the daughter of William and Effie Taylor Martin. She had lived in Muscatine most of her life. Thelma Martin married Lorence E. Howard Feb. 23, 1928 at Muscatine. She attended the Musserville United Methodist church. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Donald, Grandview; Dennis, Virginia Beach, Virginia; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Diane) Howe, Muscatine; ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was a life resident of the area. She married Kenneth Howard on Feb. 8, 1972, in Rock Island, Illinois. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Burlington. She collected dolls, and loved children, especially her own grandchildren. She loved everyone she met and they loved her in return. Violet E. Howard, 86, 1119 E. 2nd St. died Thursday evening at Lutheran Homes. Services will be Friday at the Geo. M. Wittich Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. She had lived in Rock Island County, Illinois for most of her life. She married Maynard Howard on Oct. 11, 1928 in Muscatine. The couple had farmed in Rock Island County prior to retiring and moving to Muscatine. She was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church. Her only survivors are nieces and nephews. A. D. R. HOWE, 88, who for many years was a contractor and builder in Muscatine, died today at his home, 1700 Orange street. The body is at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home, where services are pending. --- Born Sept. 17, 1867, in Rimersburg, Clarion county, Pennsylvania, he came to Muscatine with his parents, J. E. and Myra HOWE, in 1873. He attended the public schools in Muscatine and for about four years worked at the carpenter trade at LaConner, Wash. He married Laura Belle MASTERS on Sept. 24, 1890, at Dalkena, Wash. She died in December of 1917 at Muscatine. His marriage to Bertha GOBBLE took place here on June 6, 1926. Her death occurred in 1946. --- Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Curtis GOSMA, Brookston, Ind., and Mrs. Dorothy DAUT, Manhattan Beach, Calif.; on son, Walter HOWE, Muscatine; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs. Gladys BLOOM, and three brothers preceded him in death.

ELMIRA HOWE---- SUDDEN DEATH OF PROMINENT WOMAN ------------ HEART FAILURE CAUSES DEATH OF MRS. J. E. HOWE ------------ Is Stricken With Fatal Attack Shortly After 3 O'clock This Morning And End Comes Soon ------------ Many Muscatine people were shocked this morning to hear of the announcement of the death of Mrs. J. E. Howe, which occurred at the family residence at an early hour today. Her death was very sudden and was due to heart failure. Several weeks ago she was ill, but she had seemingly recovered and yesterday took an active part in making the annual sale of the Methodist ladies a success. She was at the Hershey building until the evening and while somewhat fatigued when she returned to her home, her condition was not such as to give any premonition of the untimely close of the useful life. Mrs. Howe was stricken with the fatal attack of heart failure shortly after three o'clock this morning, and passed away about twenty minutes later. The members of the household were greatly shocked with the realization of the loss which they had sustained. Mrs. Howe was very prominently known in this city and her death is the matter of the deepest regret to all those who knew her. The family is greatly bereaved because of the unexpected and sudden loss. Mrs. Howe enjoyed the highest esteen and respect of a large acquaintanceship and well merited it. Miss Elmira Hurlbut was born in Armstrong county, Pennsylvania, on February 18, 1848, and forty-seven years ago she was united in marriage in Clarion county, Pennsylvania, to J. E. Howe. Ten years later they moved to Muscatine and since that time have enjoyed an enviable position in the community. Mrs.Howe is survived by three sons, Edward Herbert Howe, of Jackson, Miss.; A. D. Rolland Howe, of Muscatine, and Dr. George Howe also of this city, together with her husband. One son, Jared Howe, died fifteen years ago. Mrs. Howe was a faithful member of the First Methodist church and was prominent in several of the societies of that church. She has been very active in the Ladies' Aid society and took a deep interest in the Sunday school department being assistant superintendent. She was also a member of both the home and foreign missionary societies. She was also included in the membership of the Shades Reading Circle and the Kensington club. No Funeral arrangements have been made as yet.------- MRS. J. E. HOWE LAID TO REST ------------ Last Sad Rites Performed Over Remains of Mrs. J. E. Howe This Afternoon ------------ Rev.L. M. Grigsby conducted the funeral services over the remains of Mrs. J. E. Howe at 2 o'clock this afternoon, the services taking place at the residence. Those acting as pallbearers were : P. W. Francis, W. E. Downer, Julius Schmidt, Dr. H. F. Lange, Dr. L. Reppert and Charles Ruthenberg. Interment was made in Greenwood.

Funeral services for Mrs. Fannie HOWE, 81, pioneer Nichols resident who died Saturday at Bellevue hospital, Muscatine, will be held Tuesday at the Nichols Methodist Church, with burial in the Nichols Cemetery. --- Miss Fannie Nodine was born Feb 3, 1859, at Huntsville, Conn., and was married to James Nelson Hillyer on July 21, 1878 at Conesville. Five children were born to this union, of whom four survive; James H. and John A. Hillyer, of Nichols, Irving W. Hillyer, of Muscatine and Grace M. Renshaw, of Canaan, Conn. One daughter, Harriet F. Smith, preceded her in death. Mr. Hillyer died on July 24, 1914, and she was married on Sept. 18, 1915 to Lymann E. Howe, at FallsVillage, Conn. He died 14 years ago.--- In addition to the children, 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Howe came to Iowa at the age of 16 and lived here since that time, with the exception of 11 years in Connecticut.----Submitter’s Note: Correct spelling is Lyman. Fannie died on January 18th, 1941.

J.E. Howe, 506 East Eighth street, a well known contractor here for many years. Died at his home this afternoon at 12:40 o’clock after a 10 day illness, at the age of 87. Senility was given as the cause of his death. --- Mr. Howe was born May 8, 1887, in Clarion county, Pa., and came to Muscatine in 1872. He married Elmira Hurlbut in 1863, and four children were born, three of whom are still living. His wife preceded him in death 13 years. Mr. Howe was a member of the First Methodist Episcopal church. He leaves to survive him, three sons, e. Herbert of Beloit, Miss. A.D. Rolland Howe and G.R. Howe of Muscatine. Two sisters, Jennie of Muscatine and Mrs. J.E. Lyons of Vera, Wash., and one brother, M.Y. Howe of Muscatine, also survive. --- Funeral arrangements have not as yet been made, pending word from out of town relatives.

M.Y. Howe, Ex-Educator, Called at 97. – Morrison Young Howe, 97, for 20 years principal of the First Ward school, now Washington school died at his home, 200 East Seventy street, at 1:45 a.m. today after an illness of 10 days. --- Mr. Howe was born in Clarion county, Pa., March 25, 1835, the eldest son of the Rev. Jared and Mary Ann Young Howe. His grandfather, Simeon Howe, was a Pennsylvania pioneer, settling in Clarion county, western Pennsylvania, in 1815. His father was a member of the Erie conference of the Methodist Episcopal church and his home was a stopping place for early itinerant preachers. --- Educated in Pennsylvania. --- Mr. Howe received his early education in the district schools of his naïve county and in 1851 entered Allegheny college at Meadville, Pa., where he prepared for his profession. He began his teaching career in the days of the great academy movement in American education, resigning his position as principle of Covode academy at Covode, Pa., to come to Iowa when his parents, with other members of the family, had preceded him in the 1860’s. --- He was principal of the First Ward school here for 20 years being associated with Superintendents F.M. Witter, J.H. Larkens and E. F. Schall. His teaching in Pennsylvania and Iowa covered a period of more than 30 years. --- In May 1859, Mr. Howe married Miss Margaret Watson of Callensburg, Pa. Her death occurred in 1860. In 1867 he married Miss Sarah Elizabeth Brisbin of West Freedom, Clarion county. She died in 1925. Also preceding him in death wee a daughter, Lillian A. Howe, who died in 1907 and two sons, Adrian M. Howe in 1916 and William E. Howe in 1930. --- Active in Church. --- Mr. Howe had been a member of the First Methodist Episcopal church here for 60 years. He was also a member of the official board of the church for many years and had served in the capacity of steward, secretary and recording steward of the board. Fraternally he was a charter member of Eagle lodge, A.O.U.W. --- Surviving are two sons and five daughters, all but one of whom will be present for the services. The body is at the Hoffman Funeral Home and will be returned to the residence Friday afternoon. Funeral services will be conducted at the residence at 2:30 p.m. Saturday by the Rev. B.F. Schwartz pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

Second Member of Howe Family Dies – The Rev. W. E. Howe Succumbs at Muskogee, Okla. – Remains Will Be Brought To City For Burial – Double Funeral Service To Be Held in Afternoon. In the death of Rev. W.E. Howe at six o’clock Sunday morning at Muskogee, Okla., his home for the past few years, the second demise in the Howe family occurred within four days, his brother, Simeon K. Howe having passed away in Pasadena, Calif. Wednesday. The remains of both will arrive in the city this evening and be immediately taken to the home of their brother, J.E. Howe, 506 East Eighth street, where the last sad rites will be held Tuesday afternoon, at three o’clock with the Rev. L.M. Grigsby, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church, in charge, following which interment will take place in Greenwood cemetery. --- The announcement of the death of the late Rev. W.E. Howe will be received with great sorrow by the friends of the afflicted families. For the past few years the Rev. Mr. Howe had led a retired life at Muskogee, Okla., but at the time of his death had been supplying a pulpit in the absence of one of the pastors. --- He was born at West Freedom, Pa., August 30th, 1849, and spent his young manhood as a resident of Muscatine, having accepted his first charge in the divine conference at Altoona, Ia., in 1879, after having graduated from the Garett Biblical Institute at Evanston, Ill. He became a member of the Des Moines conference in 1880, and in the same ear was united in marriage to Miss Adda Boydston, of this city. Among the other pastorates which he had held during his lifetime were those at Guthrie Center, Sydney, Hamburg, Shelby and Carroll, Ia. --- Besides his widow, he is survived by three children, Mrs. Bert Hine, Mrs. Chester Lee and Robert Howe, all of Muskogee. Three sisters, Misses Jennie and Leona Howe of this city, and Mrs. Luella Lyon of Spokane, Wash, together with three brothers, M.Y., J.E. and H.S. Howe, all of this city, also survive. --- Accompanying the remains to this city early Tuesday morning will be Mrs. Howe and son, Robert, of Muskogee, and Edwin M. Howe, son of the late S.K. Howe, of Kansas City, Mo., J.E. Howe of this city, and Mrs. Lyon of Spokane, Wash.

W.E. Howe Dies at Moline, ILL. Heart Disease Fatal to Former Muscatine Man; Funeral Here Tuesday. – Word has been received here of the death of William E. Howe, a former resident of Muscatine, at his home in Moline, Sunday. Heart disease caused death. --- Mr. Howe was born at West Freedom, Pa., May 17, 1870, moving to Muscatine with his parents in 1872. He was reared here and received his education in the city schools. He is survived by two sons, Howard M. and Lamar, of Los Angeles, Calif., and a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Lewis of San Diego; also by his father, M.Y. Howe, two brothers and four sisters, and one half-sister. --- The body was removed from the Daniels and Ferguson funeral home in Moline this afternoon to the Hoffman mortuary. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 from the home of the father, M.Y. Howe, 200 East Seventh street. Service will be in charge of the Rev. Benjamin F. ELEANOR HOWELL------ MISS HOWELL DIES AT LADIES HOME ------------ DEATH OF WELL KNOWN WOMAN WAS QUITE SUDDEN ------------ Former Music Teacher Who Has Resided Here For Many Years Died Sunday Afternoon ------------ Miss Eleanor Howell, a well known inmate of the Old Ladies home, passed away at 3:30 o'clock on Sunday afternoon at the institution on Mulberry avenue. Her death was caused by asthma and was quite sudden. The woman was able to be about on Saturday and in the afternoon made a visit to the city. During the evening she became ill and yesterday her condition became rapidly worse. Miss Howell has resided at the home for almost five years. She has made her home in Muscatine for many years, and was for a considerable time a music teacher in the city, and she also sang in several of the local churches. Her only surviving relative is a nephew at Elgin, Illinois.

Mrs. Hubacher, 89 Taken by Death; Rites Wednesday---- Mrs. Carrie Hubacher, 89, of 1220 Logan street, died at 5:20 p.m., Monday at Bellevue hospital. The daughter of Constantine and Elizabeth Gettert Hinkel, she was born March 8, 1863 in Muscatine and had been a life resident of this city. She was married June 6, 1888 to Charles H. Hubacher. Survivors include her husband; one son, Robert; one daughter, Mrs. Helen Cyra; one sister, Mrs. Cora McCoy; one grandchild and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, four brothers, and two grandsons who were killed in action during the Second World War. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral home. Dr. Joseph M. Kennedy, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, will be in charge. Hubacher, 91, life resident of Muscatine, whose death occurred at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Grigg Nursing Home. The Rev. James Webster, pastor of the First Baptist church will have charge. Burial will be at Greenwood cemetery. Mr. Hubacher was born July 21, 1863, at Muscatine, the son of John and Clara Miller Hubacher. His marriage to Carrie Hinkel took place here on June 6, 1888. Surviving are one son, Robert Hubacher; one daughter, Mrs. Helen Cyra; one granddaughter and three great-grandchildren. His marriage to Phoenie R. RAINBOW took place June 11, 1896, in Muscatine. He had been employed as a rural mail carrier for a number of years. --- Survivors include four sons, Harold O., Frank L., Orville G and Robert A., of Muscatine; two daughters, Mrs. John TIEDEMANN of Muscatine and Mrs. Wesley SMITH, Sr., of Columbus Junction; 18 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Joe HUBBARD, well-known Muscatine county farmer, will be held Tuesday at St. Mathias church with the Rev. J. J. Welsh officiating. The body is at the Riley Funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary’s cemetery. --- Mr. HUBBARD died Saturday afternoon at Bellevue Hospital. He was born in Muscatine June 30, 1871, and for many years operated a farm west of Muscatine on highway No. 22, there are no immediate survivors. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and a sister.

She served on the Board of Directors for the Muscatine Welfare Association, and was a former Board Member for the Muscatine Chapter of the American Red Cross. --- Survivors include her husband, Clyde Hubble of Muscatine; three sons, Charles “Chuck” HUBBLE of Tipton, Jon C. HUBBLE of Woodland, Calif., and Andrew Mack HUBBLE of Littleton , Colorado; one daughter, Cheryl Dickinson of Jacksonville Beach, Florida; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four great great-grandchildren. --- She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Warren WINTERMUTE.

DANIEL HUBER-------Solemn requiem mass was celebrated Saturday at St. Mary's church for Daniel Huber, whose sudden death occurred Wednesday morning at his home on Rural Route No. 4, by the Rev. Father Henry Sendbuchler. Interment was made in St. Mary's cemetery. Accolytes were Frank Pallischeck, Gerald Cunningham, Richard Rininsland and Henry Unkel. The St. Mary's high school choir sang to mass with Sister Mary Vera as the accompanist. Casket bearers were Frank Harper, William and Lawrence King, Albert and John Noll and John Baker. The Riley-Meyers Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. HUBER, a painter and decorator by profession, resided at 400 Pond street. --- The son of John and Clara HOFFMAN-HUBER, he was born in Muscatine on Dec. 30, 1883.. He married Bertha NALL on June 26, 1906 in Muscatine. --- Surviving are his wife, three sons, Kenneth, Marion and Lloyd HUBER, all of Muscatine; two brothers, Clarence HUBER of Muscatine and Henry HUBER Of Topeka, Kas., and eight grandchildren. ANSWERS CALL BUT TWO WEEKS AFTER HUSBAND---MRS. JOSEPH HUBER, Dies in Lake Township ILL BUT HALF HOUR-- Husband Was Called By Death on March 18-Attack of Heart Failure is Fatal to Wife Today Scarcely more than two weeks after the death of her husband, Mrs. Joseph Huber succumbed to an attack of heart failure at her home in Lake township at 12:15 o'clock this morning. Shortly before midnight, Mrs. Huber was stricken and all efforts to revive her were futile, death coming about half an hour after the attack. Mr. Huber died March 18, after an illness of several years duration. Emma Lucas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Lucas was born in Indiana, January 21, 1856. When twelve years of age she came to Muscatine county with her parents and had resided in Lake township continually since that time. February 22, 1875 she was united in marriage with Joseph Huber who preceded her in death just two weeks and three days. To this union ten children were born, all of whom survive. They are Mrs. Joseph Thauren of Sioux City, Iowa; William and Dan of Colton, South Dakota; Charles Huber of Westmore, Montana; Mrs. John Harper, Mrs. Aylette McGowan, George, Frank, Leo and Lewis, all of whom reside in Lake township. Besides the children, three brothers and her mother survive the deceased. The brothers are William and Samuel Lucas of Cresco, Ia., and Henry of Pequot, Minnesota. No funeral arrangements have been made as yet.

FRANK JOSEPH HUBER, 72, died Sunday at his home on route 4, Muscatine. He had been in failing health for about four years. A farmer, Mr. Huber was a life resident of Muscatine county and had never married. He was born Oct. 23, 1889, the son of Joseph M. and Emma Lucas Huber. Mr. Huber was a member of St. Mary's church, Muscatine. Survivors include three brothers, Leo and Lewis, with whom he had made his home, and Charles of Montana. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters. The body is now at the Riley funeral home where the rosary will be said on Tuesday evening. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at St. Mary's church, and interment will be at St. Mary's cemetery.

Records at Elmwood Cemetery show that Frederick Huber was moved from Elmwood Cemetery to Woodmere Cemetery on 19 October 1893. No reason was recorded for the re-burial.

Deceased Was Nearly Lifelong Resident of Muscatine County - Leaves Ten Children
Joseph F. Huber, one of the best known and most popular residents of Lake township and almost a lifelong resident of Muscatine county, died at his home at 2:30 o'clock Sunday morning. Death was caused by a cancer, from which he had been ailing for more than a year. Mr. Huber was born in Germany, December 8, 1851 and came to Muscatine county in the childhood days, residing here until death occurred. He was united in marriage with Miss Emma Lucas February 26, 1875. He was a member of St. Mary's church here. In addition to his wife, the deceased leaves ten children, three girls and seven boys as follows: Mrs. Joseph Thauren of Sioux City, William and Daniel Huber of Colton, S. D.; Charles of Westmore, Mont.; and Mrs. John Harper, Mrs. Aylette McGowyan and George, Frank, Leo and Lewis Huber, residing near Bayfield. Funeral services have not yet been announced.

He was a member of the Catholic church. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery. Mrs. Huffman was born Aug. 19, 1916, in Muscatine, the daughter of Jess and Maude Tucker Blake. She first married Wilfred Houser on Dec. 18, 1935. He preceded her in death in March 1972. She then married Hubert Hoffman on Nov. 4, 1979. He preceded her in death in October 1995. She was a member of Ss Mary and Mathias Parish. She and husband Wilfred owned and operated Rink's Clover Farm Market. She enjoyed bowling, fishing and camping. Word has been received here of the death of Kenneth HUGHES, 67, Sunday at the Bozeman, Mont. hospital. Mr. Hughes was born and raised in Muscatine and lived here until about three years ago when he went to Bozeman, Mont. While in Muscatine, Mr. Hughes was employed at Hawk Motors. --- Surviving are his wife, the former Urenia (Wink) SWANK; one daughter, Mrs. Lorenia WOLD; and six grandchildren, all of Bozeman. Also, one sister and one brother. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. --- Funeral services will be held Tuesday at Bozeman with burial at he Bozeman Memorial cemetery.

MRS. SARAH E. HUGHES DIES THIS AFTERNOON ------WELL KNOWN RESIDENT OF MUSCATINE SUCCUMBED. Had Been in an Invalid State of Health for Years----No Funeral Arrangements------An announcement which will be received with the keenest sorrow and regret by the older residents of Muscatine, is that conveying the sad tidings of the death of Mrs. Sarah E. Hughes, which occured at the family residence at 715 West Third street at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon. Her demise was not unexpected as her condition has been critical for some time. Mrs. Hughes had been in an invalid state of health for seven to eight years but it was with patient resignation that she suffered. Mrs. Hughes was always of a quiet and retiring disposition, but her pleasant personality and kindly ways won her a wide circle of friends.----Native of Kentucky-----Miss Sarah Dowry was born on February 5th, 1825 at Louisville, Kentucky, and came to Muscatine county in 1865. She was united in marriage to Thomas R. Hughes at St. Louis on September 22, 1845, who preceded her in death more than fifty years ago, having passed from this life in March, 1860. Her death is mourned deeply by her two sons, W. H. Hughes and S. M. Hughes, both of this city as well as by several grandchildren, together with her nieces and nephews. No arrangements have been made forn the funeral.

CHARLES E HULSE---Funeral services for Charles E. Hulse, 82, were to have been this afternoon from the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home. Rev. C. W. Dehne was the officiating pastor. He married Nettie MAPES Aug. 8, 1894 at Adams Station. He came to Muscatine about a year ago to live at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harold F. WICKEY. --- Survivors are; one son, Loyd H. Funeral services for Michael Hunn, civil war veteran and former Muscatine County resident, who did Sunday morning at the home of a son, Phillip Hunn of Davenport, were held this morning from the St. Mathias church. The Rev. F.J. Leonard officiated. The G. A. R. had charge of services conducted at the Meyers funeral home. Burial was made in Greenwood cemetery. Six G.A.R. veterans were pallbearers. They are J.M. Duncan, Frank Thatcher, James Corbin, Wm. Hessler, John Koehler and August Eichoff.

GEORGE W. HUNT------ George W. Hunt was born May 12th 1844, south of Moscow. He died December 24th, 1927, at the home of Edward Marolf, north of Moscow where he had made his home for the past year; aged 83 years, 7 months and 12 days. He was married to Catherine Dorfler, February 19, 1866, who preceeded him to the life beyond three years ago. To this union four children were born, three sons dying in infancy. Also a foster son preceeded him in death. He leaves to survive him one daughter, Mrs. Anna Wiese, eight grand-children, nine great grand children, one brother, Austin Hunt of Muscatine, Iowa. and one sister Mary Henderson, of Los Angeles, California. Five brothers and two sisters preceeded him to the great beyond. Mr. Hunt was a kind and loving father and grand-father, and will be sorely missed by those of him family. Funeral services were held Monday December 26 at one P. M. at the house and one-thirty at the Moscow church in charge of Rev. Jos. Newgard, pastor of the Grace Reformed church of Wilton. Interment was in the Moscow cemetery. The pall-bearers were three grand sons, George Elmer and Merle Wiese and three grandsons-in-law, Edward Ehrich, William J. VanGent and Edward Marolf.

John C. Hunter, a veteran of the civil war and a prominent Muscatine Island farmer for the last forty-five years, died following an extended illness at his home in Fruitland township shortly after 7 o’clock this morning. Leakage of the heart caused his death. He was 77 years old. --- He was born in Warren county on February 18, 1843, and came to Muscatine county when 14 years old. He served with Company B Thirty—fth Iowa Infantry, during the civil war. On February 11, 1877, he married Miss Susie Hogan, to which union three children were born, all of whom survive. --- Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Asa Shephard of Fruitland; two sons, Salem Hunter of Muscatine and Phillip Hunter of Red Bluff, Cal.; two sisters, Mrs. E.W. Peck and Mrs. Flora Springer, both of Muscatine; and one brother, Samuel Hunter of Everett, Wash. --- Funeral services will be held from the home at 1:30 o’clock Saturday afternoon. Burial will be made in the Muscatine Island Cemetery.

HUNTER DEAD---- Passed Away Today at 2;15 at Her Home on East Eighth Street, --------- HAD BEEN ILL LONG TIME. --------- Husband and One Son Survive---Bore Her illness With Great Patience---Had Resided In This City For Eight Years. ---- The death of Mrs. J. S. Hunter occurred at her home, 311 East Eighth street, today at 2:15 o'clock, after an illness of about four years, during which she suffered greatly. She had resided in this city for eight years. Mrs. Hunter's last months on earth have been filled with suffering. For some time she had been afflicted with cancer and though all possible was done to alleviate her pain, she constantly grew weaker. She was courageous until the last and was anxious to assist herself as much as possible. She had not been confined to bed until recently. Her ambition to be of some help to her husband and child and desire to become better if possible gave her strength to be about, when many of much stronger physique would have given up long since. Esther Davis was born in Hillsboro, Montgomery county, Ill., April 12, 1872, and was married to James S. Hunter, March 15, 1893. To this union two children, a son and a daughter, were born. The latter is deceased, while the son, Leo, survives. There are four sisters and one brother. They are: Mrs. John Cox, of Illinois; Mrs. Wm. AGED RESIDENT DIES AT HOME OF SON HERE---- Mrs. Mary Catherine Hurlburt, one of the best known and oldest residents of this city, passed away about 12:15 o'clock this afternoon at the home of her son, A.J.Hurlburt, 312 East Eighth Street. Mrs. Hurlburt had been confined to her bed for nine months, and had been ill for some time previous to that. The hardening of the arteries, influenced by senility, is assigned as the cause of the death. Mrs. Hurlburt was born in Pennsylvania August 19th, 1820 and had she lived out two months longer would have reached her 95th year. She spent the greater part of her life in Pennsylvania, not coming to Muscatine until about 37 years age. For some time she has made her home with her son, at whose residence she passed away, about 35 years ago. She was a member of the First M.E.Church of this city and was always a faithful church worker. She is survived by three children, H. S. Hurlburt, Mrs. Harriett Yingling, and A. J. Hurlburt, all of this city. Thus far no funeral arrangements have been made.

Funeral at 2 o'clock to-morrow afternoon from the residence, Rev. D. Murphy officiating. Mr. Hurlbut was father-in-law of J. E. Howe and A. R. Steel, of this city and moved to Muscatine a year and a half ago from Pennsylvania. His wife survives him.

A. F. HUTCHINGS----- DEATH CALLS A. F. HUTCHINGS TODAY ------------ PROMINENT CITIZEN DIES AFTER A WEEKS ILLNESS ------------ Was Native of England and Had Made Muscatine His Home For 25 Years ------------ A. F. Hutchings passed to rest at his home on Mulberry avenue this morning at 10 o'clock after an illness of little more than five weeks duration. He had suffered periodically from pneumonia for tha last five years and the attacks sapped his vitality to such an extent that he could not withstand another siege. Mr. Hutchings was one of the best known citizens in Muscatine. He was a resident of this city for almost a quarter of a century, coming here from New York City in the interest of E. S. Jeffray & Co., dry goods merchants. He was identified throughout the United States in the mercantile trade to which he devoted most of his life. A specialist in linens, he built up a reputation for himself that was gained only from conscientious adaptation to his business and honest dealings with his patrons. About ten years ago he retired from active service. After taking a complete rest for one year he took up the management of the Guarantee and Loan company with which concern he was affiliated until the time of his death. He was born in London, England, and came to this country when a young man. The only near relatives to survive him are his widow, Mrs. Marie Louise Hutchings, and son, Joseph Hurchings, who made his home with him. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.

AUGUST HUTTIG DIES AT NOON---- West Hill Resident Succumbs To Illness--- Native of Germany and Resident of Muscatine For Almost Thirty Years, Dead----- August Huttig died at his home on Fletcher avenue at the age of 55 years, after suffering from diabetes for almost five years at noon today. His life was not dispaired of until last November, when his condition took a sudden turn for the worse. He recuperated somewhat, but again suffered a relapse and his ailment was not ended until today. He was a resident of this city for twenty-nine years, having come here in 1882. During this time he made a host of friends and was highly rspected in his community. He was a native of germany, having been born in Saxony, July 24, 1858. His widow, Mrs. Mollie Huttig, two daughters and three sons survive him. One of his daughters, Mrs. Mollie McTurk, resides with her husband at 54 Bridgman avenue, while his other daughter, Miss Edith lived with him at home. The sons, George, Edmond and Theodore, also resides at the home. Mr. Huttig was employed at the Huttig factory for eighteen years. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.

BENJAMIN HYINK---- DEATH OCCURRED AT HOME ON EIGHTH ST. THIS MORNING---- Typhoid Pneumonia and Heart Failure Given As Cause of Demise---Was 38 Years of Age---- At his home on East Eighth street, shortly after midnight this morning, occurred the death of a prominent and most respected citizen, Benjamin Hyink, typhoid pneumonia and heart failure causing his demise. His sudden death, which followed a short illness of two days, will be keenly regretted by a large number of friends, by whom he was highly esteemed. Mr. Hyink served in the capacity of foreman at the Van Nostrand Saddlery Company for many years. He was a faithful member of the United Brethren church, superintendent of the Sunday school, and was always ready to lend a helpful hand to the church or to any worthy individual. Socially he was a member of the Iowa Lodge No. 2 A. F. & A. M., of the Loyal Order of Moose, the Modern Woodmen and Woodman's Aid Society and his absence from the lodge sessions will be keenly regretted by all those with whom he formerly associated with there. Mr. Hyink, who was the son of Herman Hyink, was born in Muscatine November 23, 1872, and had lived here all his life. On November 28, 1894, he was united in marriage with Miss Laura Tohm. The following persons survive him: His wife, two children, Elmer and Clarence C.; his father, two sisters, Martha M. and Mrs. Howard Hackett of this city, and one brother, Harry R., of Plano, California. Funeral arrangements have not been made.

JOSEPH HYSLOP---- HYSLOP FUNERAL AT GREENWOOD ------------ Rev. J. N. Elliott conducted services over the remains of Joseph Hyslop in Greenwood chapel at 2:30 this afternoon. The death of Mr. Hyslop occurred at 7:30 Saturday night, at 218 Mulberry avenue. The cause of Mr. Hyslop's death was pneumonia, with which he had been ill the past three weeks, and although he for a time seemed to be recovering nicely he suffered a relapse which brought on his death. He was born in Scotland and had attained the age of 76. Mr. Hyslop had resided in Muscatine the past 13 years. Besides one son, John, of Nebraska, no one survives him.
