He was running the edging machine and while laying a scantling on the machine the board met with an obstruction which caused it to spring from its place hitting Hine in the face and breast and knocking him senseless to the floor. On the arrival of a physician, who had been immediately summoned, the body was lifeless. --- Mr. Hine leaves a wife and three children and an aged mother who is dependant upon him for their support. S. F. BOKE AND ADELLA HINES------- THREE HOURS SEPARATE DEATH OF MAN AND KIN-------S. F. BOKE AND DAUGHTER MRS. ADELLA HINES, OF THIS CITY SUCCUMB-------CLIMAX TO ILLNESS-------Veteran Front Street Resident and Local Woman On Sick List For Months---One Dies At 11 O;clock Sunday Morning and Other at 1:55 P.M.-------Less than two hours after her father, S. F. Boke, a well known local resident, had succumbed at his home at 2806 East Front street at 11:30 o'clock Sunday morning, Mrs. Adella Hines , wife of Fred Hines of the Garren and Hines boiler works firm, died at her home at 1114 East Third street at 1:55 o'clock. Both had been seriously ill and in a critical condition for some time. Mr. Boke, who was a gardener, observed his seventy-fourth birthday anniversary July 4. Mrs. Hines attained the age of 44 years in June. Mr Boke had been ailing from a complication of disease for six months and was confined to bed for two weeks. From the time that the first effects of the disease were felt, his condition gradually weakened. Mrs. Hines demise was the climax to an attack of dropsy which she suffered for four years. An epileptic stroke, however, which befell her yesterday, combined with the news of her father's death, it is said, weakened her considerably.-----Pennsylvania Native----Mr. Boke was born in Pennsylvania, July 4, 1842. He came to this city 30 years ago, after serving in the Civil war, and resided on the River road for many years. He was a member of Shelby Norman Post, G. A. R., of this city. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Boke and three children, Mrs. F. D. Bailey, Mrs. Charles Kleindolph and Frank Boke of this city. He also leaves a niece and seven grandchildren. DISTRESSING CASE- Suicide of a Mother Yesterday morning, about eight o'clock, the dead body of Mrs. Barbara Hine, residing on the hill at the end of Third Street, near Lombard, was found in a cistern on the premises. No marks of violence were visible on the body, and from the fact that a flat iron was attached to her waist, and a ladder found in the cistern, it was at once supposed that the unfortunate woman had committed suicide. The deed was probably committed Saturday morning, as she left her house at that time, and was not seen again until found in the cistern. Her absence excited alarm and diligent search was made for her, bit without result until yesterday morning. Justice Brumfield, in the absence of Coroner Beard, held an inquest on the body, the verdict of the jury being that the woman had committed suicide while under an attack of temporary insanity. She leaves a family of seven small children and her husband, who is absent in the country. Mrs. Hine had been greatly depressed for some time past, on account of dificulties with neighbors and domestic troubles. Last Friday she told a neighbor that she would not live long, and has several times made remarks of a similar character. We have received the following communication from Justice Brumfiled, which explains itself. EDS. JOURNAL: Will you give the following a place in your paper: There seems to be quite an excitement in the community in regard to the death of Mrs. Barbara Hine. In order to allay any undue excitement, I would say that after a very careful examination of the body on the part of the jury and others, and all the testimony that could possibly be got touching the manner of her death, it was the deliberate opinion of all present, as well as the jury, that no person or persons are implicated in the death of the deceased. For fear that the innocent may be accused (inasmuch as it is known that the family of the deceased have had difficulty with a family in the neighborhood), I have made this statement. If any person wishes he can have access to the testimony taken at the inquest by calling at my office in Tremont Building.---- P.A. Brumfield---- J. P. and acting Coroner--------"THE MUSCATINE JOURNAL", Muscatine, Iowa, July 13, 1871-----LOCAL NEWS---- The children of Mrs. Hine, the suicide, we are told, report that Monday night they saw the ghost of their mother stalking around the house and weeping. Terribly frightened, they went to the house of one of our citizens on Front Street and refused to return home. They probably saw the ghost through an excited imagination.-----Submitter's Note: ENARIN, Barbara----- received photo of Barbara Hines tombstone at Greenwood Cemetery from Polly at the cemetery office. Although the cemetery has no record of her burial, there is a headstone at Greenwood, Ogilvie Add., Block 8, Lot 67. Barbara is buried near Sophie Hein Ponbeck (d. 14 Jan 1927).----- Edward Smith has Barbara's birth name as Efnarin or Efmarison. Ethel Phillips spelled it Sefferon.

DEATH of JOHN P. HITCHCOCK ----- Mr. John P. Hitchcock, an extensive and well known farmer, died at his home in Lake township, about eight miles west of this city, this morning, It will be remembered by our readers that about the 1st of April last Mr. H. was so unfortunate as to have his right foot caught in the gearing of the horse power of a corn sheller, suffering so severe a crushing that it was thought necessary to amputate the foot midway between the ankle and knee. The operation was performed on the 6th of June, and though recovery seemed doubtful he continued to improve till about ten days ago, when he imprudently ate too freely of turkey dressing, bringing on diarrhea, which, in his reduced physical condition, caused his death, as we are informed by the attending physician, Dr. Robertson. The Dr. said the amputated limb was doing well and but for the diarrhea the patient would not have died.--- Mr. Hitchcock was a native of Ohio, having been born in Scioto county in 1810, being, therefore, 71 years of age. He settled in this county in 1847. He leaves a large family and many warm friends to mourn his loss.--- The funeral will take place at the family residence at ten o'clock tomorrow forenoon.
