OLD RESIDENT IS CALLED TO REST-----MRS. CARRIE B. FEZLER DIED THIS MORNING.-----Was One of the Earliest Teachers of Muscatine Schools---Funeral To Be Held Monday.------ Mrs. Carrie Barrows Fezler, one of the oldest and best known residents of South Muscatine, passed away at 9:30 o’clock this morning, at her home on Phillips street, death being due to senility. Mrs. Fezler had been failing in health for the past year and late in March was taken to Hershey hospital for treatment. After remaining at that institution for a little over a week, she was again removed to her home, where death came. Mrs. Fezler was one of the oldest living Muscatine teachers, having taught in the city high school when the first-class was graduated from the old school on the third floor of what is now the Scott house. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the Musserville M. E. church and will be in charge of Rev. F. A. Smith and, if he is in the city, Rev. Charles Bryden, of the Baptist church, will assist.-------- A Life Sketch.------ Mrs. Carrie Barrows Fezler was born in New York on September 18, 1832, and died in Muscatine, Iowa, on May 14, 1910, making her age 77 years, 7 months and 26 days. She was the oldest child of Herman Austin and Elizabeth Barrows. Her childhood and youth were passed in the vicinity of Utica, New York. She received what was then rare for a girl---a higher education---and was graduated with her sister, the late Mrs. J. P. Walton, from the Clinton Liberal Institute, April 10th, 1855. She took up the profession of school teaching and came to Muscatine in 1858. She was one of the early teachers of Muscatine schools and was teaching in the city high school at the time of the first class graduation. The high school was then held on the 3rd floor of the old Scott House at the corner of Iowa Avenue and Third street, with the school entrance on Third street. The Civil War came, and like many other brave girls of that day, she bade her lover answer the call of his country and go to the front. He was Captain George E. Burmeister of Co. C., 35th Iowa infantry. When he bade farewell he said: “You shall see me again either dead or alive.” The time came when he obtained a furlough for the purpose of coming home to be married. He was also to be promoted to the rank of major. The papers were made out to take effect upon his wedding day. A few hours before he should have started for home he went outside the camp, and a stray rebel bullet wounded him. In this condition he began his homeward journey reaching St. Louis, where he died, after arranging for the embalming and sending of his body home to his waiting sweetheart. He was buried in Greenwood cemetery and there by his side, after so many long years she will be laid to rest. Miss Barrows continued teaching for many years, both in Muscatine and Nevada, Ia. In Nevada she married J. Nellis with whom she went to South Dakota to live and where her only child, May, was born. The little one only lived 11 months and died. She was brought here and buried. Her marriage not being satisfactory she obtained a divorce and returned to teaching school. She was married in 1874 to Benjamin Furnas, of Letts, Iowa, who died in 1877. Afterward she married David Bellings who died in Colorado. In 1889 she was married to P. B. Fezler, of Billings, Minnesota, and in six months she again became a widow. She then returned to Muscatine to spend the remainder of her life. For the past fifteen years her home has been in South Muscatine, where many warm friends sincerely mourn her demise. In her young days she united with the Baptist church in New York state, bringing her letter to the Baptist church here. She was one of the earliest and most faithful members. During the latter years of her life she was quite feeble, but she never lost her friendship for the local newspaper reporters. She was always ready to assist them by gathering news. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. H. H. Harrison, who alone is left of their family, and by six nieces and one nephew, Mrs. James Q. Beatty, Mrs. A. C. Hopkinson and Joseph E. Hoopes, of Muscatine; Mrs. Ella Thompson, of Kiowa, Kan.; Mrs. May Lee, of Lookout, Okla.; Mrs. Lola Lee, of Capron, Okla., and F. A. Burdick, of Denver, Colorado.

Four physicians joined in the endeavor to save her life, Dr. Royal remaining at her bedside until morning, when death came. The unfortunate woman could give no explanation for her act. Muscatine Youth, 16 Is Killed in Highway Mishap -- Thomas FINNEGAN, 16, of 917 Mulberry avenue, died at Muscatine General Hospital Monday as a result of injuries incurred in a highway accident. The youth, son of Alderman and Mrs. Harold “Pat” FINNEGAN lived less than an hour and a half after being thrown from an automobile as it rolled into a ditch. Deputy Sheriff Mike Martin said the accident occurred on Highway 61 about a mile south of the south city limits.--- Three In Car-- FINNEGAN was riding in a car driven by Robert Gerard Mau, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nau, 819 Woodlawn avenue. Another passenger was Larry Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Martin, Route 6.--- The three had been at the Cheri-Top Drive In, 1200 Grandview avenue. In an automobile owned by the Nau boy’s father, they were proceeding south on Highway 61. According to the deputy sheriff’s version of the fatal mishap, the car carrying the three youths overtook an old-model car that had either very dim or no tail lights.--- In an attempt to avoid crashing into the slower-moving vehicle. Nau veered tot he left. Spinning out of control, the Nau machine careened into the left ditch. Deputy Sheriff Martin estimated the 1957 Pontiac traveled about 200 feet and then overturned. FINNEGAN, who was seated in the middle of the front seat, and Martin, who was seated on the right side, were both thrown out of the violently twisting machine. Mau managed to support himself by gripping the steering wheel and was only partially ejected as the wrecked auto came to rest in the ditch.----- The Geo. M. Wittich funeral home ambulance was summoned to the scene and removed the three injured youths to Muscatine General hospital. At the hospital, it was reported that Nau and Martin had suffered minor lacerations. Both were able to leave the hospital today.-----May Hold Inquest------ Ralph Figg, Muscatine county coroner, opened an investigation at the hospital and also visited the scene of the accident, following the youth’s death. The death was attributed to head injuries. The coroner reported the investigation was continuing today, and that an inquest may be arranged.---- Figg reported that he had obtained a statement this afternoon form Fred Millage, 16, of 2007 Oneida avenue, driver of the car which was traveling south on highway No. 61 ahead of the Nau car at an estimated speed of about 45 to 50 miles an hour. Millage said that his right tail light and license light were in working order, but that his left tail light was out. Millage informed the coroner that the car came up behind him at a high rate of speed, and as it was passing him, left the highway, flipped over twice in the air and once again after hitting the ground. He went back to give assistance, he told the coroner, and found that the FINNEGAN and Martin youths had been thrown out of the car and that Nau remained in the wreckage.---- Millage at Sheriff Charles Anson’s office this afternoon said he was traveling between 45 an d50 as the Nau car approached from behind at a high rate of speed. Millage said that in his rear view mirror he saw the Nau car swerve to the left, turn twice in the air, and crash into a ditch. He said there was no racing of any kind involved in the accident.----- Thomas Patrick FINNEGAN was born Feb. 10, 1941 at Iowa City, and had spent practically all his life in Muscatine. He was employed as a woodworker at the Huttig Manufacturing Co. and was a member of Grace Lutheran church. He is survived by his parents, Harold (Pat) and Muriel KLEEVTER-FINNEGAN, and by his maternal grandfather, Erwin KLEEVETER, of Muscatine. Positive in his opinions, unswerving in his adhesion to that which he thought to be right; vigorous in the carrying out of his plans, and fair in his dealings with men, he built for himself a monument that time will not destroy. He had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for several years, often holding official position, and a member of the Masonic Lodge long enough to have been placed upon the honorary roll. To his wife and son and fellow citizens he leaves the heritage of an unsullied name and a character thoroughly tested and found "not wanting." The funeral services were conducted by the pastor of the church, Rev. C. F. Sharpe, and the Wayne Masonic Lodge.

MRS. FRED FISHER PASSES AWAY IN OREGON-------- A recent issue of the Greshem, Oregon Outlook contained the following notice of the death of a former local woman:--------- The funeral of Mrs. Eudora M. Fisher, mother of Mrs. Grace E. Kitchen of Portland, Mrs. Hattie Vorphal of Oregon City, and Boyd Fisher of Greshem, was held at the Pleasant Home Methodist Episcopal Church Wednesday Nov. 23, in the afternoon. There were many friends and relatives from Portland and Pleasant Home present. A large display of floral tri- butes was banked about the casket at the altar, giving evidence of the love and esteem with which Mrs. Fisher was regarded by those who knew her. The pall bearers were Fred Marshall, Boyd Fisher, Harry Morgan, M. Morgan, Robert Vorphal and M. J. Melton. The music was furnished by W. B. Cory, H. Lee Ball, Arthur Sloop, and the Rev. Oliver Gill, and Mrs. Gill at the organ. The musical number given by the quartet were "Asleep in Jesus," "No Night There" and "Abide With Me." The service was conducted by the Rev. Oliver Gill, the pastor of the church, who based his remarks on life of the deceased and the scriptural passages John 14 and the 23rd Psalm. The committal service was held at Lincoln Memorial Park chapel. Eudora M. Morgan was born January 22, 1859, (the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Morgan) in Muscatine Co., Iowa. In 1883 she was united in marriage to Fred L. Fisher, who survives her. In early childhood Mrs. Fisher united with the Methodist Episcopal Church and continued a loyal and consistant member throughout her life. She was a great granddaughter of the Rev. Thomas Odell, of the Methodist Episcopal Church, who rode circuits in the early days of American Methodism under Bishop Francis Asbury. One of the highly prized heirlooms of the family, possessed by Mrs. Fisher, was a certificate of ordination signed by the Bishop Francis Asbury himself showing he had ordained Thomas Odell. For several months Mrs. Fisher realized that the end of her earthly life was near, but she bore her suffering with true Christian fortitude and bravery, knowing that she was ready, although life was sweet and loved ones dear to her. Besides the husband and children mentioned, she is survived by an adopted brother and five grandchildren, all of whom had visited her in her final illness and were present at the funeral. A host of friends will mourn her departure.

JOHN M. FISHER, EARLY SETTLER PASSES AWAY------- Well Known Citizen Yields to Fatal Illness on Tuesday.------- Will Be Buried This Afternoon.-------- John M. Fisher died at his home on South Commercial Avenue on Tuesday, Sept. 15. He had been in fairly good health until about a year ago when he was taken ill, but his grim determination to carry on regardless of his physical condition permitted him to return to work this past spring and summer. But two weeks ago he began to fail and it was soon seen that the end was not far away. Mr. Fisher was among the early settlers in this locality. He was among the original educators of this vicinity. He was a college graduate and his services as a teacher won constant demand. The Eagle joins the entire community in extending the bereaved children and other relatives and friends their sincerest sympathy in their great hour of sorrow. The following tribute was prepared by the. late Mr. Fisher's .pastor, the Rev. W. G. Muhlman, and will be read at the service this afternoon. Obituary John Marvin Fisher was born in West Liberty, Muscatine Co., Ia. on Nov. 2 1861, (the son of James M. and Nancy Matilda Fisher). When he was 21 years of age he came to Wright County. He attended Normal Teachers College in Columbus Junction, from which he graduated. It was there he met Miss Marion Woodard. A romance sprang up between them which culminated in their marriage on June 25, 1884. The first year of their married life was spent on the farm near Muscatine, after which they returned to Wright County and settled on the farm now occupied by Martin Larson four and a half mile east of Eagle Grove. Here they raised their family, farmed, and during the winter Mr. Fisher taught school. He taught for many years in Troy and Woolstock townships. Mr. Fisher was a well-read man who never had any trouble to get a school to teach. Once he secured a school by singing "America" over the telephone to a member of the school board. All but the younger of his children went to school with him. There are many who live in this community who were his pupils. He used to ride to and from school on horseback. There were no fences in those days so that he rode across country. One day when he was riding home from his day's work in the schoolroom, he became lost in a blizzard. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Fisher. They are: Raymond Fisher, Mrs. Ethel Evans, Miss Maude Fisher, Mrs. Stella Atwood all of Eagle Grove, and Ralph Fisher of Kanawa. They moved from the farm to Eagle Grove on March 1, 1911, and made their home on South Commercial Ave. Mrs. Fisher passed away on Oct. 12, 1922. Mr. Fisher had always been in good health up till a little over a year ago. He had a bad spell but recovered enough to go back to work. He suddenly grew worse again about two weeks ago and passed away Sept. 15, 1931, at the age of 69 years, 10 months, and 13 days. He was a member of the Troy Methodist Church. He confessed Christ as his Saviour and died in that faith. During the years since the death of his wife he has had the pleasure of having his children near him. Miss Maude was the only one left at home and she was faithful and kind in her attentions to him till the end. In addition to the sons and daughters mentioned, he leaves 4 sisters, Mrs. Clarence Henderson of West Liberty, Iowa, Mrs. Bert McGowan of Silsbee, Tex., Mrs. Tom Haurigan of Melstone, Mont. and Mrs. Harriette Aikins of Washington State; one brother Fred L. Fisher of Greshem, Ore.; eight grandchildren, and in addition, many cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held in the Methodist Church today, Thursday. Rev. W.G. Muhlman will preach the sermon. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
