Demise of J. H. Collins-------Yesterday just as the Journal was going to press, we received the news of the sudden death of J. H. Collins, who passed suddenly from this life at his home on North Mulberry street at 2:30 p.m., his sudden taking off attribulated to heart failure. Only the day before his death he was upon the streets of the city apparently well and hearty, and seemingly carrying his 81 years of age with remarkable ease. His sudden death is a great shock to the family and his many friends, both in and without the city. John Henthorne Collins was born at Grandview, Washington county, Ohio, December 28, 1819. On September 26, 1858, he was united in marriage to Miss Emily Robinson, at Edgington, Rock Island and county, and for 27 years he followed the pursuits of agriculture, being one of the prominent, prosperous and substantial farmers of Mercer county. Gaining a competency by years of unrelenting industry, he retired from active life in 1885 and came to Muscatine to peacefully pass his reclining days. Religiously decedent was a member of the Presbyterian church, and politically a staunch, uncompromising follower of the party of Jefferson and Jackson. His widow, two sons, two daughters and one granddaughter mourn the departure of a faithful spouse and provident parent, the latter being Frances E., Everett E., J. C., and Mrs. Fred Gobble and daughter. Two brothers in Ohio, Elliott H. and J. W. Collins, also survive. The funeral is appointed to take place Monday morning at 8:30 from the family residence. The remains will be taken to Edgington, Illinois, interment to be made in the Johnson cemetery.

WILLIAM E. CONE------ WM. E. CONE DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS ------------ SUFFERING ENDED BY DEATH EARLY THIS MORNING ------------ Prominent South End Citizen, a Resident Here Almost All His Life Succumbs ------------ After a long siege of sickness during which he received treatment at both his home and hospital, William E. Cone, died shortly after midnight at his residence, 210 Green street, at the age of fifty-one years. His vitality had been snapped of all it's recuperative powers in his battle for life the past few months and his constitution had been weakened to such an extent that the ravages of the disease could not be further withstood. While at Bellvue hospital he underwent an operation, the result of which forecasted the end. A complication of diseases set in which some of the most prominent physicians in the city, who were in attendance upon Mr. Cone, could not successfully contend with. Death was not unexpected, but was rather anticipated, by relatives. The deceased had been a resident of this city practically all his life. Born in Pekin, Illinois, January 6th, 1860, he came to Muscatine with his father when a babe of less than two years, his mother having died a short time previous to this. He was graduated from the local public schools and attended the high school. In 1885 he married Miss Louise Detthof, a member of one of the most prominent South Muscatine families. Eighteen years ago Mr. Cone started in the drug business, entering the employ of William C. A. Busch. He was a clerk in Mr. Busch's drug store for fourteen years. The last four years he held a similar position with A. W. Morgan. A man of quiet habits, never fond of mingling with society, Mr. Cone affiliated himself only with the Mulford Congregational church and the Modern Woodmen of America. He is survived by his widow and three children, Helen, George and Esther, besides two sisters and two brothers, they being, Mrs. Minnie Miller and Mrs. G. W. Emerson of Conesville; Joseph Cone of Kane, Illinois, and Jared Cone, of Nichols. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon from the residence at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev. W. H. Thomlinson will conduct the services. Interment will be made at Greenwood cemetery. It is the wish of Mr. Cone, expressed shortly before his demise, that the funeral be private and only the most intimate friends and relatives will be invited to attend.

Last evening at 6:30 o’clock the spirit of Julius Covell of Sweetland Township passed to the great beyond. After an illness of several weeks Mr. Covell answered the call last night and quietly went to his internal home with his Master. James Covell was born in Huron Co. Ohio in 1834 and was sixth in a family of 10 children born to Jonathan and Clarinda Covell. His father was a farmer and came west to Muscatine with the family in 1855, settling in Sweetland Township. He was united in marriage with Miss Stewart a native of Vermont, and daughter of Otis and Mary (Fletcher) Stewart. Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Covell of whom three are living. Mrs. Covell and a son, Arthur, have gone before. Those left to mourn the loss of the loved one are, Charles, Clifford and?? all living near the homestead. Mr. Covell was a member of the M.E. church and was always an active Christian. The funeral will be held from the Bloomington church, the hour will be announced later. --------------Submitter’s note: I double-checked the obit and it does say Julius and James.
