MARY FELICITAS CARR----- BELOVED SISTER ENDS FIFTY-FIVE YEARS OF LABOR----- At the St. Mathias convent, where she spent more than half a century, Sister Mary Felicitas, the superior of the Muscatine branch of the Sisters of Charity,B. V. M., passed to her eternal reward shortly after eight o'clock last evening. Her death marks the close of a most useful and beautiful career, a life of sacrifice and hundreds of homes are saddened today because of the loss of the beloved nun.----- Pneumonia Fatal------ For the first several weeks the condition of Sister Felicitas had been serious and little hope was entertained as to her recovery, for her weakened condition, it was feared, would not withstand the ravages of the disease, with which she was suffering. About six weeks ago the venerable nun contacted pneumonia, which in turn affected her heart and brought about her demise. On Sunday her condition became worse and yesterday it was announced by the attending physician that the end was near. All during the day it seemed that her life was fast ebbing away, but it was not until shortly after 8 o'clock last night that dissolution occurred. On Saturday word was received at the convent announcing the death of the only sister of the dying superior, but the sad intelligence was not conveyed to the patient because of her condition.----- Is a Loss----- The death of Mary Felicitas is accepted by every member of St. Mathias church as a personal loss, for through her many years of sacrifice and labor she had won the highest esteem and respect, and her departure only brings to mind the many noble deeds and charitable acts which marked her useful existence. Her painstaking care, her sincere and deep appreciation of the many kindnesses toward her, the sunshine which she brought into the sick room and the consolation which she carried into the death chamber, are remembered now, and the many years which the nun spent with the people of St. Mathias church will forever be interwoven with threads of golden memories.------ A Long Active Life----- Sister Mary Felicitas came to Muscatine in the early sixties and she witnessed its growth from a primitive town, scattered among the many hills, to the progressive and modern city of today. She experienced all of the trials and hardships of the pioneer teacher, and had witnessed the St. Mathias school grow from a little frame structure to an imposing, modern academy of learning.and in the declining years of her life it was a pleasure for her to behold the fruits of her early endeavors. The success of St. Mathias school must be credited to the lately departed sister. As to the success which attended her efforts during all of the fifty-five years of conscientious labor, of work well done, the present high standard of excellence of the parochial school, and the appreciation of those who received their education there, testify most eloquently.------ Native of Ireland----- Sister Mary Felicitas was born in Ireland in Dceember, 1840, and when a child of four years was brought to America by her parents, who first settled in Providence, R.I., and later removed to Dubuque. Ia. Here the young woman entered the convent school taught by the sisters of charity and in September, 1856, she took her vows and became a member of the sisterhood. In 1862 she was sent by the mother superior to Muscatine, and here she remained almost continuously, with the exception of a few years when she was removed to other cities.---- Golden Jubilee----- On September 23, 1906, the fiftieth anniversary of her reception into the sisterhood was celebrated, and that occasion remained fresh in the memory of the beloved nun duting the closing days of her life of sacrifice. A worthy and merited tribute was paid her in the elaborate exercises which marked the golden jubilee, and the celebration was accepted as the earthly reward and display of appreciation of her years of loving labor.----- Universal Respect----- Sister Mary Felicitas enjoyed the respect of the entire city. All those who, during her many years in Muscatine, became acquainted with her, realized that she represented the highest type of womanhood and the consecration of her life to the service of the Divine Father and of His children made her presence seem a benediction. Many, some of whom were not adherents of the same faith as that professed by the nun, received their early instruction under her, and they today rank among the most prominent and successful business men of the city, and they, as do the members of St. Mathias parish realize that an unestimable loss has been sustained in her departure. Sister Felicitas possessed rare executive ability and the manner in which she for so many years conducted the affairs of the parochial school emphasized her exceptional talent. As a music teacher she ranked high, and devoted many of her years to the teaching of both vocal and instrumental music. Sister Mary Felicitas took a kindly interest in every pupil in the school, and for more than two score of years she had shared the joys and vicissitudes of the people who loved her dearly and will in the future venerate her memory.------- Funeral Thursday------ The funeral services will be held at the St. Mary's Catholic church on Thursday morning at 9 o'clock. Solemn Requiem High Mass will be celebrated by the Very Reverend J. T. A. Flannigan, pastor of the Sacred Heart Cathedral at Davenport, assisted by several other priests. The sermon will be delivered by Right Reverend Monsignor J. P. Ryan, of Davenport, pastor of St. Mary's church at that place. Both Father Ryan and Father Flannigan were for many years associated with Sister Felicitas, the former, who is a Muscatine boy, having received his early instructions under her charge. Because of the death of the superior, the St. Mathias parochial school will be closed until next Monday, as a mark of respect.

Companions Leap Out of Engine's Path----- Gerald William Carter, 18, Sweetland township youth, was instantly killed Thursday afternoon about 3:30 when struck from behind by the the west-bound Golden State Limited, Rock Island passenger train, near the Sherman street crossing, at the easterly limits of the city. Two companions, with whom he was walking along the railroad tracks while returning from fishing in the Mississippi River nearby leaped to safety from just in front of the locomotive. Gerald's efforts to escape failed by only a split second, a steel step at the right side of the locomotive's pilot striking the youth's leg as he was almost clear of the tracks.---- Accident is Verdict---- A verdict of accidental death, resulting from a broken neck, was returned by a coroner's jury, which conducted an inquest at 10:30 this morning in the George M. Wittich Funeral home under the direction of Coroner W. S. Norton. Members of the coroner's jury were E. E. Fishburn, Ed Vanatta, and E. H. Vaupel. Merle Thomas, 14, of 1518 East Fifth street, and Albert Hite, 16, of 1521 East Fifth street, told at the inquest of how they and the Carter youth were returning along the railroad track form their fishing trip when the accident occurred. Still visibly stunned by the shock of the tragedy and their own narrow escape from death, the boys said that the noise of an east-bound freight train which was passing at the same time drowned out any warning of the limited which was bearing down upon them. They said that they had been walking on the left track, but moved over to the right track when the freight train came in view. The Hite boy was the first to glance over his shoulder and see the Golden State just behind them.---- Two Jump to Safety---- He said that the train was only about 15 feet away at the time Hite said that he yelled to the other two boys and then jumped for the north side of the track. He and Thomas both negotiated the distance in time, but Carter, who was on the inside, was struck, barely failing to clear the locomotive. Carter's body was hurled to the north of the tracks, his neck broken apparently by the force of the impact. Aside form this, Dr. Norton said that the youth apparently suffered no other serious injury. E. E. Stroud,, fireman, and I. S. DeFord, engineer of the train, both from Eldon, IA, also testified at the inquest. Stroud said that he saw the three boys, two on the inside of the rails and the third walking along just on the outside of the track , as the train came around a curve near the Sherman street crossing. He said that the youth were about 150 feet away when he first saw them.---- Trainmen's Story---- The fireman said he yelled to the engineer that there were men on the track ahead. DeFord, who said he had just whistled for a private crossing, testified that he blew the engine whistle again and applied the brakes. The engineer said that he was on the outside of the curve, and was unable to see the boys until the cab reached the site of the accident and he saw the Carter boy's body hurtling to the north of the tracks. He said there was a trace of blood on a small step to the right of the locomotive pilot and expressed the belief that this had struck the boy. The train came to a stop and backed up. The boy's body had by that time, however, been taken away in the George M. Wittich Funeral Home Ambulance. Gerald was born, June 20, 1919 in Sweetland township, Muscatine county, and had been baptized at the Grace Reformed Church at Wilton.---- Services to Be Sunday---- He had taken examinations and had been accepted for enlistment in the United States navy and was at home awaiting a call for service when death came. He made his home with his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Carter, in Sweetland township, since the death of his mother. Surviving are his father, Fred H. Carter of Muscatine; two grandmothers, Mrs. Amelia Pantel of Muscatine and Mrs. Mary Carter of Sweetland township; a sister, Cleo, and a brother, Paul, both of Sweetland township. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday from the George Wittich Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Harker cemetery. The body will be taken to the home of his grandmother, Mrs. Carter, this afternoon, and will be returned to the funeral home Sunday for services.

Murder ------- Warrant issued for local man after stabbing in tavern fight---- A Muscatine man, Jerald Gene Chapman, 45, 606 E. 6th St., was stabbed to death in a fight in a downtown tavern Thursday night. A warrant charging Frank Trevino of Muscatine with first degree murder was issued today. Trevino is described as 28 years old, about 5 feet, 8 inches in height, with black hair and a black mustache. Witnesses told police that Chapman had been stabbed in the left side by a man wielding a 5-inch lock-blade knife, during a fight in Edwards Tavern, 207 Mulberry Ave., about 8:34 p.m. "They were drinking and some kind of argument started. We believe Trevino then produced a knife," said Police Captain Ronald Martin. Police were called to the tavern by a bartender when the fight broke out, but arrived to find Chapman already had been knifed. Chapman was taken by ambulance to Muscatine General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A spokesman at Muscatine General Hospital had no details of Chapman's injuries, but a police officer said Chapman was stabbed in the "neighborhood of the heart." An autopsy on Chapman's body was to be done today at Muscatine General Hospital. Muscatine police are being assisted in their investigation by officers of the Department of Criminal Investigation. Police officers and DCI investigators worked on the case late into the night. Private services and visitation for Chapman will be held at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. Pastor Clyde G. Hartman will officiate. A memorial fund has been established at the funeral home. The son of Carl Alfred and Dorthy Edda Hayes Chapman, he was born July 12, 1936, in Muscatine.
