Death of Mrs. Harvey Baker---- Another Old Settler of Muscatine County Called Beyond the Dark River.------ Word comes to us from Pleasant Prairie, that Mrs. Harvey Baker died at her home in Fulton township, near Pleasant Prairie, yesterday, at 3 o'clock, of pleurisy. Her death was quite sudden and unexpected to her family and friends. Obituary-----Leander Baldwin was born in Wind(h)am county, Vt., Jan. 21, 1834 and died at his home in Atalissa, Dec. 2, 1897, aged 63 years, 10 months and 11 days. Comrade Baldwin was one of the earlier settlers of Atalissa, having come here in 1856, where he worked at the trade of carpenter until 1860, when he moved to Iowa township, Cedar county. He enlisted in Co. B, 35th Iowa Infantry, in 1864, and was with the regiment in all the hard-fought battles and long marches. He was an applicant for a pension for disability incurred in the army, but having no hospital record was rejected. In April last he made an application, and by the help of Congressman Curtis was granted one of $13 per month in June, receiving arrears and one quarterly payment. His sickness was long and lingering and was caused by his army service, no doubt. He lost his wife on the 14th of October last. He was the father of three children, who died in youth. He leaves two sisters and one brother. One sister was present when he died, one lives in California and it is not known at this time where his brother is. Comrade Baldwin was a good man in every sense of the word---kind and obliging, ever ready to do a good and benevolent act to a friend and neighbor. O.

STILL ANOTHER OLD SETTLER GONE---- Lewis Barditt, another of the old settlers of this place, died at his residence in this vicinity, of lung fever, Tuesday. He located here, with his brothers, Thomas and Humphrey; as early as 1835. Thus one after another of the "old settlers" who braved the hardships of pioneer life at this place are passing away. Within a year past from this date six of our citizens who located here previous to 1840 have "gone the way of all the earth." How solemn and impressive is the warning to those who remain, (and to all of us,) in the contemplation of this fact! "Be ye also ready."

" Spirit Enters Other World"--- Mrs. Rebecca Barnard passes to golden shore.--- Death came after two weeks illness--Funeral will be held, Monday afternoon from First Baptist Church--Exemplary Life. At the home of her son, Thomas Barnard, 307 West Third St. at 1:45 o'clock PM, Saturday, occurred the death of Mrs. Rebecca Barnard, wife of the late John Barnard, aged 76 years and 19 days, death coming after two weeks illness with typhoid-malaria fever. Mrs. Barnard had been ill since returning from a visit to relatives and the fair at St. Louis, and though the best of physicians, aided by tender nursing of loved ones, was always in attendance upon her, the disease refused to yield to treatment and at the hour noted she calmly sank to rest, the end coming peaceful, this mother in Israel passing away without fear of death, but in the spirit in which she uttered her last and favorite words, "I have fought a good fight; I have finished by course; I have kept my faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at the day." With the prayer of her pastor, Rev. Judson Kempton, fervidly uttered for her soul, this loving and devoted mother, surrounded by her loved ones, returned to the God who have her life, and rest eternal came as a crowing glory of a life well spent. Mrs. Rebecca Rupp Barnard was a native of Pennsylvania, having been born in Bemont Co. that state on October 10, 1828. When 18 years of age, she became the bride of John Barnard, the young people being united in marriage at Zanesville, Ohio, on October 1, 1846. Eight years later, in 1854, when this country was in an undeveloped state, the family came to Iowa and to Muscatine, settling in Bloomington Twp. on the fine farm now owned and occupied by their son, Edward Barnard. This was the family home for many years, and here the husband and father, John Barnard, one of the most highly respected, residents of the county, passed away four years ago. Since his death, the mother had made her home in this city, for the past year at the home of her son, Thomas. During their residence here the family was always known as one of the first in the county. With her husband, Mrs. Barnard endured the inconveniences of pioneer times, but most of her life was spent in comfortable circumstances. Mrs. Barnard was known for her many good qualities. She early united with the First Baptist Church of this city, and was always one of its most consistent members. her home life was ideal. She was a very sunny and happy disposition, looking always on the bright side of life and not allowing the little vicissitudes to cause her much annoyance. Thus in her last years, she maintained that sweet temper and kind disposition that enabled her to be a devoted wife and mother and a loving admiring friend of children, of whose companionship she never tired. Kind, patient, always wanting to help another, charitable and generous to a fault, the memory of her countless acts of Christian prompting will always quicken the heart pulse of those who were the recipients of these things, or objects of these ministrations. She is gone, but not forgotten; the memory of her beautiful Christian character will forever serve as an example for those who knew and loved her. Those who are left to mourn the death of Mother Barnard; are the five sons, all of whom were present when the White Angel came to bear her away. These sons are: William of Chester, Ill; Thomas of this city; Edward of Bloomington Twp.; Albert of East St. Louis, and J. Carl, of this city. One daughter, Lillie is deceased. Many grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Barnard is also survived by five brothers and two sisters, these being George Rupp of Elliott, Iowa; Mrs. Remembrance Morford of Seattle, Wash.; David and Nathan Rupp of Pottawattomie Co. Iowa; Mrs. Sydney Smith of Elliott, Iowa, and John and Charles Rupp of Washington, Iowa. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the First Baptist Church; Rev. Kempton conducting the service.

Barrows, 87, for many years pilot of his own boat, hauling freight and passengers to Davenport and Burlington from Muscatine, died at the home of his son, George Barrows, 507 Schiller Street, at 5:15 last evening, after an illness of about two weeks. Captain Barrows was born in Meggs (Meigs) County, Ohio, and came to Muscatine in 1851, 75 years ago, and has made his home here since that time. He purchased one of the largest gasoline launches available about 35 years ago, the “Emma B.” and for many years piloted the boat down the river to Burlington and up the Mississippi to Davenport with freight and passengers. For the past 10 years the boat has been inactive, the captain making his home on the boat, which was moored on the bank of the Mississippi in South Muscatine near the Maple Grove road. Boat Has Sunk. The “Emma B.” has also been conquered by time, sinking slowly since Captain Barrows’ occupancy ended, until it now rests on the bottom of the river near the bank with the water up to the windows of the cabin. Captain Barrows married Emily J. Browning at Muscatine in 1859. She preceded him in death eight years. Four children were born, three of whom survive. They are Edwin, who lives just across the river in Illinois, Albert of Everett, Wash., and George of Muscatine. A great many grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive. No funeral arrangements have been made. The body was removed to the Meyers Funeral Home but will be returned to the home of George Barrows at 507 Schiller Street, later today.

He was the son of William and Sarah Beard, who were among the early settlers of Seventy-Six township. MATTHIAS BECKE-------- MATTHIAS BECKE DIED SATURDAY ------------ DRUMMER BOY IN CIVIL WAR PASSES FROM THIS LIFE ------------ Was the Drum Major of the Thirty-Fifth Regiment---Also Well Known Resident ------------ Matthias Becke, the drummer boy of the Thirty-Fifth Iowa Infantry passed away at his home on East Seventh street on Saturday evening shortly before 10 o'clock. His demise marks the departure of one of the most prominent men of the local surviving veterans of the great war of the rebellion. His death which was peaceful, was attributed to asthma and the ills attending old age. Mr. Becke was well known in this city and was a conspicuous figure in the reunions and encampment held in Muscatine during the past decade. Martial music in the Pearl City was associated with his name, and when the sound of fife and drum was heard on the streets of the city the residents knew that Mr. Becke was a part of the little band. Mr. Becke was a heroic soldier and served in two armies. He first served in the fatherland, and when after he came to America, President Lincoln called for volunteers, he enlisted in the cause of his adopted country, and in many battles, displayed his heroism by marching with the drum corps in the lead of his regiment. Matthias Becke was born in Germischhelm, Bavaria, November 27, 1827. He came to America in 18--, and came direct to Muscatine. He worked here until the war as a stone mason. When the war broke out he enlisted as a musician in the 7th Iowa Infantry and served until regimental bands were abolished by the war department. He then enlisted as a drummer in Company D, 35th Iowa Volunteers, and was, later made drum major by Col. S. G. Hill. He served in this capacity until the close of the war and then took up civil life. He is survived by his wife and three children, George, of Moline; Martha at home; and Andrew, of Rock Island. Fraternally he was a member of the German Mechanics Aid Society. He was also a member of St. Mary's Catholic church and belonged to Shelby Norman Post, G. A. R. The deceased was born in Newenkirchen, Prussia, May 30, 1818, and was consequently 76 years, 2 months and 5 days old at the time of her death. She was married to Theodore Becke, September 24, 1841, and came to America the following year, 1842, coming almost directly to Muscatine. She was one of the seven Catholics who organized the first Catholic church in Muscatine and has always lived as a consistant member of that church. Richards, Mrs. George Koehler, Mrs. Charles Balluff, Miss Elizabeth and Mr. Theodore Beck, Jr., all of this city. The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock from St. Mathias church. MRS. SALOMA BECKER------who died yesterday afternoon at the home of her son, Theodore Becker, 607 West Sixth street, was born in Kufel, Germany, June 15, 1815, and at the time of her death had reached the age of 87 years. She was well known here and had many friends. Her health had been considerably impaired for some time past, owing to her extreme age, but fatal illness, acute bronchitis, which was the cause of her death, was of short duration. She came to this country in 1837 and in 1840 she was united in matrimony with Michael Becker, who passed away a few years ago. Seven children survive, they being Mrs. Wm, Huttig, Miss Henrietta, Theodore, August, Henry, Albert and William Becker, all residents of this city. Throughout her life she was a Christian woman, being a consistent member of the Congregational church. Her Christian traits of character won for her the high esteem of all with whom she came in contact. The funeral will be held at the German Evangelical church at the corner of Fourth and Sycamore streets, at 10 o'clock, Thursday morning. Rev. Hans, pastor of the church, will conduct the funeral service.

OBITUARY.-- Beckey---- Early this morning occurred the death of Alfred Beckey the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Beckey, of 1009 Nebraska Street, in South Muscatine. The little fellow was only sick a little over a day. On Christmas he was bright and happy as usual and appeared to be well but that night was taken with a violent convulsion. His lungs were affected and in spite of all that human skill could do the little fellow breathed his last this morning about 3 o'clock. Alfred Beckey was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Beckey and was born a year ago last March in Tipton, Missouri. The family came to Muscatine last March, and have resided here since that time. There are left to mourn the loss of the boy his parent and two sisters, Margaret and Helen and one brother, Joseph. This makes the second death in the family inside of five months, they losing their little girl nine years of age last August. Mr. and Mrs. Beckey and family have the sympathy of all at this time. The funeral will be held Saturday morning at 9 o'clock from St. Mary's Church.
