OBITUARY---- Alger: - Susan DeMosse was born Nov. 24th, 1814, in butler County, Ohio, and died at her hoe one mile north of Wayne, Neb., Aug. 10th, 1896. She married Pierson Alger Sept. 29th, 1836. They sent the early part of their married life in Ohio. They removed to Iowa in the year 1840 and settled near West Liberty, Muscatine County, where they remained until the spring of 1885, when they removed to Wayne, Wayne Co. Neb. Mrs. Alger was a woman of extraordinary character and was loved best by those who knew her best. She was reared by Christian parents, her grandfather having left France for America in the time of oppression that he might enjoy his religion. She gave her heart to God in her early girlhood, and after a busy, well spent life she has passed to her reward. She was a woman that could enjoy prosperity or could bear adversity or whatever might fall to her lot, and was never heard to complain. In an early day in Iowa she did much to the support of the church, always ready to entertain its ministers and laymen. She was sick for over one year, and for the last three weeks of her life was a great sufferer. She was ready and willing to go to that glorious home where so many loved ones were awaiting her coming. And while the dear, tender mother is missed so greatly in the home,' tis sweet to know that she is in that blissful rest, where, as she was heard to murmur near the last, "where moth and dust doth not corrupt." She leaves an aged husband, seven sons and daughters, and three brothers to mourn her loss. These are: Joseph M. Alger, St. Louis, Mo., John D. and James Alger, of Wayne, Mrs. C.O. Fisher, of Wayne, Mrs. W.C. Hudson, of West Liberty, Iowa, Ola G. Alger of Wayne, and Mrs. W. S. Dickerson, of Rising City, Neb. The brothers are: Peter DeMosse of Muscatine, Iowa. Dr. Morton DeMosse of Neodosha, Kansas, and James DeMosse of Oklahoma. The funeral took place on the 12th at the M. E. Church. The sermon was preached from the 21 v of the 1st chap. Philipians, by the pastor, H. H. Millard. The floral tributes from friends were many and beautiful.

Officers Seek Anderson'd Kin------Former Employer on Way To Muscatine; May Be Able To Give Details------Authorities here are still awaiting the arrival of Dan Christensen, Rockwell, Iowa, contractor, before definite funeral arrangements for the burial of Thomas Anderson, who committed suicide here Thursday afternoon are made. The body is being held at the Fairbanks Home for Funerals. It is believed that Christensen, by whom Anderson was employed for a time here during the construction of the South Muscatine storm sewer last year, may be able to supply some clues to possible relatives of Anderson. Christensen is expected to reach Muscatine sometime Sunday from a point in Missouri where he has been working. Nothing found in Anderson's personal effects and automobile, which were taken in charge by the police following the suicide at the rooming house at 1211 Indiana street, gave any leads as to relatives. Investigation disclosed that the Studebaker automibile was mortgaged to a Cedar Rapids firm. The statement of Anderson, made shortly before his death, that he had ample funds to care for burial expenses, is believed to have been a bluff, as search of his effects revealed only a $5 bill and small change. No trace has been found of a small tin box, which it was alleged had been in his possession prior to his death, and which it was at first thought, might contain money and personal papers giving a clue as to members of his family.---- "THE MUSCATINE JOURNAL", Muscatine, Iowa, April 6, 1931 Front Page------Thomas Anderson burial was at Indian Creek near Letts, Iowa at 2:00 p.m. Presided by Elder A. L. Miller of Seventh Day Adventist Church of Davenport, Iowa.

ELLA L. ASHCRAFT....... Died at her home in Muscatine, Feb.11, 1885, at 4:30 a.m. of lung complaint, wife of Frank Ashcraft, in her thirty-first year. Funeral from the residence, corner of Tenth and Orange streets, Friday at 1:30 p.m. The news of Mrs. Ashcraft's death will wring with pain the hearts of a multitude of friends, and of a large number of our citizens, who had no personal acquaintanceship with the deceased. It had been known for some time that she was suffering from a pulmonary disorder, but few, if any, anticipated so immediate and sudden a dissolution. On the contrary there was the apparent promise of many years of life before her. About 2 weeks ago she found herself unable to leave her bed, and from that time her certain and rapid decline has been visable to all who saw her. Ella L. Fisher Ashcraft was born in Belmont County, Ohio, but removed in infancy, with her parents, to Muscatine. Her father died many years ago, and her mother at a comparatively recent period. Of the family, two brothers and a sister survive, the former in this city, the latter, Mrs. D. L. Stevens in Nebraska. Deceased was married in May, 1878, to Mr. Frank Ashcraft, now superintendent of the Hershey lower mill. A daughter, 18 months old, is left to feel the irreparable loss of a mother. Mrs. Ashcraft was graduated from our High School, and for five years subsequently was one of the most popular and efficient of our city teachers. During these many years of daily walks to and from her school duties, the public were led to remark her fair face and grace of manner, and these personal attractions were crowned with a sweetness and dignity of character, that impressed all who enjoyed her intimacy. She was a communicant of the U. B. Church, and her life, in all its relations, reflected the beauty of the Christian faith.-----Submitters' Note: She is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, listed as Ellen L Ashcraft.

A Muscatine man continued to fight for his life in Veterans Hospital, Iowa City, today after his half-brother was killed in a two-car accident Thursday evening about one and one-half miles east of Muscatine on Iowa highway 22. Listed in "critical" condition early this afternoon was Clifford G. Atkins Jr., 24, route 3, Muscatine. Pronounced dead at the scene of the mishap was Lerald Donnie Eis, 41, also of route 3. Services have been set Monday at the Fairbanks Home for Funerals. Authorities said Eis was the driver of a car which was involved in sideswiping a station wagon driven by Franklin D. Foster, 34, Muscatine who was returning home from work in Buffalo. The vehicles came together on the Geneva bridge, with the Eis machine traveling nearly 800 feet in a easterly direction before plunging into a creek bed. Before its final plunge, the car traveled along the left side of the highway, digging up the shoulder of the road and hitting several short posts. The car became airborne and flipped over in the ditch, estimated to be 12 to 14 feet deep, and landed on its wheels, headed back in the direction from which it came. It was the flipping of the car which possibly prevented the Eis vehicle from becoming un-noticed in the ditch since it was practically covered by deep foliage. Sheriff Dick Oppelt related that witnesses at the Ray Van Zandt farm, located near the bridge, saw the car when it was airborne and saw ensuing dust. Foster and earlier witness, John England, 115 Clifford St., both apparently were unaware the Eis machine went into the ditch after continuing up the road. Foster told authorities he applied his brakes to avoid the oncoming car, but his auto was struck on the left front side. England returned to tell investigating officers that he had to brake his car earlier to avoid an accident with the Eis auto as it pulled on to the highway from a House yard nearer Muscatine. When England, who was going to the Izaak Walton clubhouse for a trapshoot, saw the Foster car had been hit, he stopped to give the license number of the Eis auto to Foster. The number was written on Foster's arm in ink. Both men indicated the Eis vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed. Investigating the mishap, which occurred about 6 p.m., along with the sheriff was William Sharff of the Iowa, Highway Patrol. Rev. T. Ray Crews of the Musserville United Methodist church will conduct funeral services at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Fairbanks Home for Funerals for Mr. Eis. Burial will be in the Fairport cemetery. Visitation will start after noon Saturday. Mr. Eis was born April 26, 1928 at Fairport, the son of George and Larena Eis. He married Julian Ann Beatty Jan. 21, 1956 at Buffalo. Survivors include his wife; a son, Lerald (Donnie), Jr., and Kimberly Sue. Also, a brother, Jimmie Eis, Buffalo; four half brothers, Clifford Atkins, Jr., Raymond Atkins, Muscatine; Elmer J. Atkins and Jerry Atkins, Atalissa; and two sisters, Mrs. Darlene Kallenberger, Muscatine; Mrs. Edgar (Mae) Bird, Montpelier; two half sisters, Mrs. Deane Clearman, Buffalo; Mrs. Christine Sindt, Route 3; and two step sisters, Mrs. Mary Devore, Atalissa; and Mrs. Karen Samuelson, Muscatine. His mother also survives him. He was preceded in death by his father, step father, one brother and one sister.------"THE MUSCATINE JOURNAL", Muscatine, Iowa, August 13, 1969----- Lerald (Donnie) Eis---- Clifford G. She was an active and willing worker in all the societies to which she belonged, always doing her part to the fullest extent that her health permitted. In her own home she was always an affectionate, loving wife and mother. She found her greatest happiness in doing for others even to the extent of forgetting herself. She died May 14th, at 10:30 p.m. in the hospital at Iowa City after an unsuccessful operation for a complication of diseases, which was the only hope of a possible continuation of her life.
