Atalissa School

William Lundy donated three acres of land to have a school built on it. The next two school houses were erected on the land owned by Sadie Baldwin and Walter White. Later these two buildings were moved and a two-story building was erected in 1863 at the present location. In 1897 Frank Jackson dug a well at the schoolhouse. The well was 122 feet deep and had 86 feet of water in it. The old building was torn down in 1911 and the new building was erected. In 1938 a gymnasium was erected at the cost of $20,000.00.

In the beginning the school was a Select School where only students who paid tuition could attend. There were students from Muscatine and Cedar counties attending. There were no graduating classes until 1899 when the school became a graded one.

The school only went to tenth grade until around 1901 when eleventh and twelfth grades were added. Mr. Croxen was in the ninth grade in 1901 and there were 23 students, by the time he was in eleventh grade only five were left. During twelfth grade another student quit making his graduating class four in number. They were Anna Gatzke, Vearl Fiderlin, Fred Watters and himself. The Board of Education let the Principal and others dictate what courses to study. The choice was geometry and Latin which had very little use in a country high school which resulted in many quitting. If there had been more practical courses a lot more children would have stayed in school.

There was no gymnasium back then and all sports were played in the schoolyard and across the fence in the Ady Pasture. Even though conditions were so primitive there were only two accidents, Fred could recall. One was when Fred Watters was pitching when the batter hit a fly. Fred should have been the one to catch it but the catcher also tried. They collided putting a hole in Fred’s nose. Then Jamie Ady, with his arm in a sling, went for a kicked football and collided with another boy breaking his arm all over again.

The first football games was played in 1901 with Wilton Junction High School. Atalissa won with the score being in the high twenties. It was the first time Atalissa had played against another school. The game was held in the pasture at the West Side of town.

Baseball was the most popular game. A baseball diamond was laid out in the east part of the school grounds and “Work-up” was played there at recess. It was the size of a normal softball diamond but hard ball was played there just the same. There was a town team as well as the school team. Fred said there were some really good players but most were average. Ernest Lambert, Myril Doyle and Charlie Overman were good catchers, Walter McAntosh, Arthur McAntosh, Charlie Overman, Alexander McAntosh and Will Hayes were all good pitchers. Charles Overman was offered a contract with the big leagues but was persuaded not to accept the offer. However he did pitch for other towns such as Washington, Iowa and was paid for it.

Around 1901-1902 Literary Entertainment was held with Atalissa High School as the center. They were at the different schools throughout the county. Penn Avenue School, Cedar Valley, Union Valley and Cedar Hill were participants in the venture.

The last graduating class was in 1957 and those graduating were Nevin Roberts, President, Larry Whitmer, Vice-president, Darlene Bender, Secretary-Treasurer, Beverly Cale, Reporter, Richard Carlisle, Donald Dickey, Delvin Lindhorst and Karen Arnold. The Iowa State Education Department was re-districting the school systems and Atalissa became part of the West Liberty School System. However the school remained open and was a grade school for Wilton, Iowa until they could finish their new building.

The school was given to the city of Atalissa and has been rented out to the Henry Turkey Service as a home for men with handicaps. These men worked for Louis Rich Turkey Processing and now West Liberty Foods to support them…

… selves and the home. They have really become an asset to the community and are always helping clean up the streets and ditches in town. When the school caught on fire in the 1980’s, the men pitched in and helped clean it up and after the rebuilding painted the rooms.

The fire bell was lost and no one remembered what had happened to it. One of the employees found it and alerted Dwain Hepker, class of 1952. He contacted the Alumni group and at the 1993 Alumni Banquet they received contributions to give the bell a proper home. They received $1614.76 plus they used $404.00 from a community Flower Fund no longer being used and they had it placed on a brick pedestal on the west side of the Fire Station. It was dedicated on April 2, 1994 by President Donald Dickey, class of 1957, Vice-President Dwain Hepker, class of 1957, Secretary Gloria Dickey, class of W.L.H.S. 1958, Treasurer Arlene Keith, class of 1948.

According to Fred Croxen’s memories of Atalissa, school was held in the upper story of the bank building. His Aunt Alice Moore and Quartus Cornwall attended there. He didn’t know how long it was held there.

In 1930 there was a girls baseball team consisting of Naomi (Rusty) Federlin pitcher and coach, Pearl Sterner Aye was catcher, Vera Erick was first base, Oomi Federlin a pitcher. Dorothy Chapman Carlisle, Betty Chapman, Ester Erick, Martha Federlin, Margaret Sterner, Ethel Collison Conley, Clella Federlin Walton, Elsie Erick, Verda Erick and Berta Erick made up the rest of the team. They played in the pasture across from the Mini-Mart on Highway Six.

No Baseball – Atalissa Students Go on Strike
(newspaper clipping)

Atalissa – Thirteen Atalissa high school boys were reported to be on “strike” today as the result of the board of education’s ruling that no baseball game should be played by the high school team this season.

Taking no heed of the ice-coated roads and inclement weather the boys traveled on foot in groups to the homes of all the school board members Thursday afternoon and Friday in an effect to secure a reversal of the ruling. Several of the directors live on farms at some distance from town.

No decision was reported to have been reached today, although definite details of the situation were not available because of disrupted telephone service between Muscatine and the Atalissa exchange.

Was located off Highway 6 going east toward the Cedar River. It was built in 1866 and the first director was William Miller. In 1942 the director was Harold Hinkhouse. Betty Gatzke went there and she recalls in 1930 three girls became very ill and it was determined that the water was contaminated. Two of the girls got well but her sister Evelyn died from it. After that the well was capped and water was hauled in milk cans from the farm of Verle Miller.

They held the first reunion in 1942 on the school grounds. Following a basket dinner several people related some of their memories. Mrs. Myrtle LaFrentz was in charge. Mrs. Dora Watters, the oldest teacher, gave a review of her school days and the weather conditions of her first term of teaching in Iowa. Ed Oepping, the oldest pupil present, gave a short talk and then several teachers related their experiences also. At the time of the reunion there were 7 boys who attended this school to the service, six in the Army and one in the Medical Division. The school is now a cabin at Sandy Hook.
