Picture: Neighbors help out injured farmer – Nov. 1978

Don Fix knows what it is to have good neighbors. After recently injuring his arms in a farm accident, over 35 area farmers and their wives showed up at the Fix farm to pick and store about 40 acres of corn still standing in the field. With seven combines constantly combining the corn, the help finished off the field in one afternoon. Scheduled for Monday morning, Nov. 6, wet weather delayed the crews until that afternoon.

Some of the farmers working out in the field were Paul Reed, Louis Danner, Duane Forbes, Wayne Corriell, Don Passmore, Richard Shield, Warren Dutton, Bill, Gary and Craig McKillip, Dwain and Marvin Hepker, Cletus Kaska, Ken Smith, Leland, Merlyn and Wayne Spilger, Don Struck, Orville Esmoil, Wayne Kraft, Bill Welchman, Dave Schmidt, Calvin Flater, Paul Madsen, Don Rife, Sr., Don Rife, Jr. and Orville Sterner.

Picture: Community rallies to help Hunter Kordick

She has the face of an angel and big baby blue eyes. She also has epilepsy and suffers through 10-16 seizures a day. But there is hope for Hunter Nicole Kordick, the 15-month-old daughter of Scott and Beth Anne (Feldman) Kordick of Atalissa.

Doctors feel that Hunter’s condition can be corrected through brain surgery. She is scheduled to go to Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit for two days of tests beginning June 23. The actual surgery is scheduled for July 7 at St. Paul’s Children’s Hospital. (Two separate surgeries are required.)

Hunter’s friends and family from Atalissa and West Liberty have organized a benefit to help defray the costs of surgery. The benefit includes an auction and dance and will be held Friday, June 6, at the Atalissa Fire Department building beginning at 7 p.m. Deejays Chunk & Chuck will provide your favorite music from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. The auction will be held at 9 p.m. Refreshments will be available.

Items are needed for the auction and include baked goods and other items. For more information about donating goodies, call 649-3389 or 649-2541. If you cannot attend, but would like to contribute to Hunter’s medical fund, mail your donation to: The Hunter Kordick Benefit Fund, P. O. Atalissa Boy in Hero Roll – Sept. 1927
Saves Life of Little Girl Risking His Own
Rescues Thelma Connor in Front of Passenger Train.

Atalissa, Ia., Sept. 27 – But for the quick wit and prompt action of Edgar Turner, aged 12, of Atalissa, little Thelma Connor would have been killed by passenger train No. 8, recently.

This train, which passes through the smaller towns without stopping, was well into Atalissa before the youth noticed the little girl sitting directly across the track on a tricycle. There was no time to lose and dashing by the depot he carried her off the track just before the train thundered past. He failed to tell anyone of the incident but Agent Robertson saw it and told of the heroic act. Steps have been taken to call attention of the Carnegie Hero Fund commission in hopes of getting a medal for the boy.

Story by NeVada Baker
Francis “Perky” Carlisle of Atalissa and his niece Kathy Hundoble of Wilton, share a partnership in the hog farming business. Carlisle, 87, has been farming since 1933 and Hundoble quit her regular job to join her uncle in the business several years ago. Now that the hog market is so bad, they are giving away their hogs to family and friends.

Of the 200 head of market size hogs on their lot, they have given away 13 hogs to family and friends as of Monday, November 30. I asked Carlisle how many hogs they plan to give away. He said, “I’ll run out of hogs someday. Some aren’t ready to go yet, so may be worth sending to town later. I still have 117 baby pigs to feed.”

Carlisle stated that the market value of hogs is so low that it would actually cost him to send his hogs to market. “It is so close to getting nothing for our hogs, that I don’t feel bad about giving them away,” Carlisle said.

Hundoble said she never thought, when she got into the hog business, she’d end up giving them away. “Thank goodness the cattle market isn’t this bad,” Kathy said.

Carlisle said he could remember a long time ago when the market was this low, but stated he lives in the present and for the future. This attitude is probably why he has been given the nickname “Perky”.

Several friends and family members were at the Carlisle farm in Atalissa this past weekend to help butcher 13 hogs given them by Perky and Kathy.

Hundoble stated, “Tradition holds at the Carlisle farm that if you get a hog, you have to help butcher it.” (More on the Carlisle tradition next week.)
