FRED HURLBUT attended old Garfield from 1935 thru 1942. He then attended MHS and married his grade school sweetheart, Johannah Schubich June 4, 1950. He then became a steam fitter and she became a homemaker. They had 3 children; Bret who is 37; Jennifer 34 and Jason 26 years old. Fred is now retired.
He remembers Ms Othmer as always being in charge of the marble tournaments and also the Yo-Yo games. The Yo-Yo games came about when 2 Hawaiian men were out on the sidewalk of the school trying to sell Yo-Yos & Ms Othmer was going to chase them away, but instead asked them to give a demonstration in the school assembly room an if they would give away 2 Yo-Yos as prizes. Fred was one of the lucky ones and got one of them.
He also tells about Miss Coleman (2nd grade teacher) had charge of the Christmas program, and it was always the same but different children every year. It always started "I'm just the same old Santa Clause, just the same as I ever was". He also remembers the "fire drills" and having to go down those old rickety metal steps on the west side of the school building.
