Muscatine Journal December 3, 1936
Picture: Journal photo of boy dressed as an Indian holding a bow and arrow, a girl dressed as an Indian sitting in the doorway of a tepee, a girl wearing a dress with headband with feather at a drum.Learning to read through the study and development of a project has been the interesting task of first grade pupils at Garfield school since the first of October. The realization of the project is shown above, as three of the children posed in the Indian setting which they made for the party given for their mothers at the school Wednesday afternoon. The Indian boy with poised bow and arrow is Ira Morgan. Rita Grady represents the Indian sqaw in the tepee, and Anita Sue Rainey is standing behind the tom-tom. The children gathered walnuts and boiled the hulls to make dolls and dyed the muslin for the tepee. Making a study of appropriate designs, they drew their own patterns for decorating the tepee.

OLD GARFIELD CROSSING GUARDS At the beginning of each school year, five- 6th graders were selected by Ms. Othmer to be on the school safety patrol. They were assigned to watch the other children when crossing streets and going to and from school. they were given a white cross type belt with a badge pinned to it to represent the school patrol crossing guards. Each member that was selected received no special favors and they still carried on their studies. It has always been an honor to be selected to this elite group. Pictured above are 5 students that were selected. Date is unknown to me. Top row left to right: Floyd Holiday and Dayton Crim. Bottom row left to right: Gayle Hurlbut, Verne Stachar and James McCleary.

SCHOOL JANITOR HAS 30 YEARS SERVICE RECORD
HENRY MARXShould perfect attendance pins be awarded to Muscatine's janitors, Henry Marx, in charge of the Garfield building, would have an array of trophies that would be the envy of the most ardent collector of attainment awards. For 30 years, and some added months and days, Mr. Marx has been on duty at the South Muscatine schools. And in that long service period he has missed but two days. Children representing two generations have been enrolled in the school while he has served as custodian of the school property. Dean of the Muscatine school janitors, he has made his home here for more than 54 years. He was born in Germany, coming to this country in his youth. Mr. Marx resides just a short distance from the building he supervises, at 624 Wallace street.
