MUSCATINE COUNTY IOWA APPLICATIONS FOR |
MUSCATINE COUNTY IOWA APPLICATIONS FOR DIVORCE 1840-1907 were submitted by the Muscatine County Genealogical Society to Muscatine Co. IAGenWeb on July 31, 2007. We greatly appreciate the efforts of Gladys Mittman, and thank the members of the Muscatine Co. Genealogical Society for their commitment in making the footprints of our ancestors more visible!
Introduction Before 1907 there was no index for divorces, and the divorce cases were mixed in with other civil court cases. All these civil court cases were put on microfilm---in no special order. It was an almost impossible task to find any specific divorce record on the many reels of microfilm. Starting in 1907 divorce records were indexed in a separate ledger for divorces only, and these are readily available.
This index is of those who had filed for divorce from 1840 to 1907. This does not necessarily mean that a divorce was granted. Sometimes a person filed for divorce but then didn’t follow through to actually get the divorce. Some persons filed for divorce several times.
Our Genealogical Society does not have these records. They are on microfilm at the Clerk of Court office, 401 East Third Street, 2nd Floor in the Court House in Muscatine. Even with this index it is quite time-consuming to find a specific record, but it can be done.
Please note that the office of the County Clerk will NOT answer any inquiry, by phone or mail,
pertaining to genealogical purposes. Persons must walk-in and conduct the search themselves. For Research Services to obtain copies of Divorce Applications, one may contact:
