OF MUSCATINE

The commercial traveler who visits a city, town or hamlet, and fails through lack of energy or capacity, to sell a “bill” of goods, invariably sees a place through the bluest of spectacles. “This town,” says he, “is no good; dead, my friend! Deader than a door-nail!” Equally on the other hand, the commercial traveler who succeeds by a stroke of La Bonne Fortune, in “selling” a one horse merchant in the most miserable town alive, will leave it with a lasting impression of its good parts. “Why, my dear sir,” he says, with a flood on that logic by which our “C. T.” is invariably distinguished, “By all means go to Toadleville, -- a remarkably pushing town, -- in fact. A LIVE PLACE!”.

The moral of this is, that if we would know the reality of a place, we must not tap the bump of imagination – owned by a commercial traveler – it is very large.

Where then, shall we go or information upon whose faithfulness we may implicitly rely; we answer, the Directory! Has the place no Directory? Avoid it, it is behind the times. Has it a poorly patronized Directory? Be assured it is not the place for you to settle in. Has it a good Directory, plethoric in advertisements, in societies, churches, schools and accounts of public institutions, depend upon it, that is the place at to which to pitch your metaphorical tent. It is the place for the manufacturer; the place for the merchant, the artisan, the mechanic, the laborer. Look in the Directory! It is the reflex of the city, it is faithful, it is impartial, it is teeming with facts regarding the city for which it is published, and it is an epitome of that city, its business interest, its enterprise. This is an age of utilitarianism; an age demanding facts. We recognize this, and disdaining all puffery, place before the public our “Book of Muscatine.” The work …

Page 6

… will tell its own story – the degree of the book’s excellence is literally the degree of excellence of Muscatine; in other words it is a mirror, wherein we see nothing, if not a faithful reflection.

Hitherto it has been the custom of Directory publishers to give a lauditory on the city without any absolute foundation upon which to build. We, on the other hand prefer to present Muscatine in its true colors – it is a live and enterprising city, and needs so stilted expressions to show this. Instead of wasting time and space in giving imaginary statistics to prove that so and so is such-a-thing, we give simple statement of the business of the city, its manufactories, its extent, its population, social institutions, and with this, without useless and extraneous comment, leave it for the judgment of the reader.
