OAK GROVE CEMETERY RECORDS
near CRANSTON, CEDAR TOWNSHIP
MUSCATINE COUNTY, IOWA
Also known as
Jean’s Cemetery, Geans Cemetery, Cedar Township Cemetery

Directions to the cemetery: From Muscatine, turning off Route 61 on 231st Street (G-28) and go west for about ten miles (crossing over Independence Avenue). Turn left (south) on Cranston Road. Go about 2 miles and turn right onto Oak Grove Road, which is a gravel road. After 1 1/4 miles you will see the cemetery on a hillside on the left. Parking area is across the road from the entrance.

Building on some burial information compiled by Diana Muir and Rachelle Curtis from August 1997, further documentation has been submitted by Eleanor B. McCleary, Phyllis Hazen and Jean Theobald. In the fall of 2008 they walked the cemetery and worked with Richard Turner, Cemetery Sexton and Cedar Township Trustee, in compiling information from cemetery records, grave markers and other historical records. The Township Trustees manage the cemetery and burials there are still being accepted.

The land sale for this cemetery was recorded in the Muscatine County Book of Lands, volume H pages 339 & 340 - Deed from Joseph Jean and his wife, Sarah, to the Trustees of Cedar Township:

In consideration of the sum of two dollars in hand paid by the trustees of Cedar Township of the County aforesaid hath bargain and sold and do hereby grant, bargain, sell & convey unto the said Trustees and their successors in office forever the following premise situte in the County of Muscatine in the State of Iowa and in section 14 N of R 4 and bounded and described as follows: Commencing Sixty-Six poles North of the South East corner of the West half of the North East quarter of sections fourteen Township 76 North of Range from West at a Black Oak three inches in diameter thence due West twelve poles ten links to a stake, thence North twelve poles ten links to a stake, thence East twelve poles ten links to a Black Oak three inches in diameter thence South twelve poles ten links to the beginning containing one acre of ground be the same more or less to be applied for the use of a public burying Ground.
February this 17 day 1849 - Lewis L McGrew, Justice of the Peace
    Filed March 8, 1849 at 2 o’clock PM, F. H. Stone Recorder
The Cedar Township Trustees have a map of the cemetery that is divided into three sections. The oldest part had no record of being platted, but the two newer sections had been. Both surveys were done by private contract. The survey by Central State Engineering Company of Blocks A through F, dated March 1921, named the cemetery as Gean’s Cemetery. The survey by the Muscatine County Highway Department of Blocks G to I, April 1955 named the cemetery as Cedar Township Cemetery. (So that is how there are four different names referring to this place: Jean Cemetery, Gean’s Cemetery, Oak Grove Cemetery and Cedar Township Cemetery. No wonder people were getting frustrated at not finding answers!)

In 1896 Congregational church built their chapel across the road from the cemetery. In 1963 the Oak Grove Congregational Church caught fire and burned to the ground. It was not rebuilt. According to a hand-written church minute book, on a motion made May 7, 1973, one acre of land was deeded to the township cemetery trustees for parking across the road from the cemetery. March 8, 1974 the rest of the Oak Grove church property was sold to the highest bidder, Charlie Snyder for $9,225.00.

Aided by the plat maps of the newer sections, Eleanor, Phyllis and Jean were able to document names and layout of existing markers within a lot. For the old section they brought out the tape measures and measured in increments of 20 feet going west to east. Rows were defined and every marker was assigned a code number. Then, using spreadsheet, a map was created.

Submitted on January 16, 2009, the following is the data they compiled. We greatly appreciate their efforts! Good luck in finding your ancestors!
