J. J. VANCE, far., Sec. 34; P. O. Sweetland Center; born in Cumberland Co., Penn., in 1823; served an apprenticeship as chair and cabinet maker, which occupation he followed in Pennsylvania and in Muscatine, where he removed in 1845. He married Miss Isabel Jackson (now deceased) in 1854. Mr. Van Doren owns 100 acres of land; is a member of the I. O. O. F. Lodge, No. 5, Muscatine; Republican.
