MUSCATINE COUNTY IOWA Musser Public Library Bamford Studio Photo Collection Index

Helen Bamford started her career in photography as a receptionist and apprentice to the J. A. Chamberlin Studio, in 1924. She progressed from there to learning how to take and develop photographs.

In late 1949 she decided to open her own studio and named it the Helen Bamford Studio. She specialized in portraiture photography. Her Studio started out at 214 1/2 Iowa Avenue in Muscatine and was there until 1956 when she moved to 106 East 2nd street.

In the 1950's George Michael joined her photography studio. When Helen retired, in early 1978, she sold the business to George Michael. He kept the Bamford Studio name but relocated it to 209 East 2nd Street in 1984.

In 2004, Mr. Michael closed the shop. He offered the negatives for sale back to family members and donated the rest of the negatives that were left over to the Musser Public Library.

The following index covers the years 1949 through 2004 and is taken from the photographers’ logbooks and card file. Not all images listed are available for reprint, please inquire at the library for further information.
