FAIRPORT, a village 8 miles east of Muscatine, its nearest banking place, on the Kansas City branch of the C., R. I. & P. R. R. and the Mississippi river. It was formerly known as Jugtown and large quantities of pottery were annually shipped from this point to all parts of the west. Pottery is still made there, but not nearly as much as formerly. A large portion of the inhabitants are at present engaged in clam fishing, the shells being used for the manufacture of buttons in Muscatine and elsewhere. Population 150; has two general stores, hotel, two potteries, churches and schools.
