FRUITLAND, a station on the southwestern branch of the C., R. I. & P. railroad, 6 miles southwest from Muscatine, the neatest banking point. Has two general stores, a Grand Army Hall and hotel. It is the central shipping point for the well known Muscatine Island watermelons and sweet potatoes. During shipping time from August to October, and during the winter months it is a very busy place. Nearly the whole township is engaged in fruit raising, and trainloads of their product are shipped in season. During the winter months sweet potatoes are stored in large warehouses which must be kept at a uniform temperature, even in the extremest weather. Quite a number of the fruit growers raise seed which they ship in large quantities to all parts of the United States.
