QUESTION: HOW TO FIND INFORMATION ON A CATHOLIC NUN IN IOWA?

Submitted by Sheila Chaudoin, April 2012

The family was found in the 1860 Federal Census living in Muscatine County. It was said that one of the daughters became a Catholic Nun and eventually Sister Superior while living in Muscatine. The convent name or her Catholic nun name was not known. Nor was there any reference found to Catholic nuns in the Muscatine County 1870 or 1880 census. This researcher asked for help.

Sheila Chaudoin shared her experience:

I too had a ancestor that became a nun. But I knew what her religious name was and also the order she was with. So this is just a thought. I wrote to the mother house for the order in Dubuque. Was surprised to know they kept archives on all their sisters. I received copies of letters she wrote to her brother while she was in training and also the other places she went to after she became a nun.
