January 16, 2018, I found this history of Boy Scout Troop 123. My father Joseph Roth was a founder in 1928, I was a member in the 1940’s. Of course I recognize all of the names mentioned. My brother Paul was an earlier member.
Thanks. John Roth, age 87, LeClaire, Iowa.I can say that Howard Carl who was scoutmaster for many years was a great leader and a fine person. I hold him in high esteem. He was perfect for the position, having experienced service in the U.S. horse cavalry. He was a family man with four? children. They attended St. Mathias school which was across Pine St. from his modest home. He worked at Huttig Co. and walked about 16 blocks to work until he was able to afford a car about 1948.
He took his annual one week vacation to lead the scouts to Camp Minneyata near Dixon, IA. Happily, he was rewarded with every recognition that was available for his service.
Howard attracted good help. Bill Kook was an assistant scoutmaster who also contributed to their successful program.
We were lucky to go to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, in the summer after WWII. It was a great experience for troop 123 and 127.
Dick Stanley attended with troop 127. I also recall that Max Stanley was their “scoutmaster” at some early point in his career. On one occasion in the summer of 1946? there was an overnight camp-out of the combined troops. I ended up sharing a tent with Stanley Howe who was leading troop 127. I suppose Max couldn’t make it. Anyway I clearly recall Stanley Howe reading the Wall Street Journal by flashlight. In his later life he was successful CEO of HON industries. Little did I know at that time how much he would contribute to the community and Iowa State University.
I did achieve “Life” rank, next to “Eagle” and other significant awards, (Silver Arrow, Ad Altare Dei). I hold many memories of the other scouts that I knew. Scouting was a good experience for me. I’m happy that our son-in-law in California has been an active leader for many years. His son is an Eagle scout. Thanks for contributing the summary of scouting experience in Muscatine. ~ John Roth
