Lorraine Kelley Chosen Best All-Around MemberMiss Lorraine Kelley, a member of the Fulton royal Workers, is the best all-round Four-H club girl in Muscatine County.
This honor was conferred on Miss Kelley Wednesday at the West Liberty fair by judges who based their decision on the superiority of her record book, reflecting a long period of faithful work as a Four-H girl.
As a reward for her showing in the annual fair competition, the Fulton township girl will received a free trip to the state Four-H girls’ convention next year as a guest of The Muscatine Journal.
The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kelley of Fulton township, Miss Kelley is 17 years old and has been in club work for the past six years. Her prize-winning book, which included a record of her club activities, coves a five-year period.
Other Top Placings. Ranked first for her long-time personal expense account record was Marilyn Doerfer of Sweetland township. Records in this contest covered periods of not less than three years and winning of first place also carries with it a trip to the state convention.
The team of Donna Eichelberger, and Evelyn Hoopes of the Lake Lassies carried off top honors in the demonstration contest at the fair. Entitled, “Shadows From the Attic,” their demonstration gave instructions on the fashioning of shadow boxes from red walnut picture frames.
Other Muscatine county girls will make a bid for honors at the state fair in Des Moines with exhibits which were rated at the top in the West Liberty competition. The prize-winning exhibits were announced as follows:
“An Interesting Center for a Girl’s Room” – At least three articles, one of which is a piece of natural finished furniture, won by Mardell Schroeder; at least three articles, one of which is a piece of improvised or made-over furniture, won by Mardell Schroeder; at least three articles, one of which is a piece of painted furniture won by Marilyn Doerfer; at least three articles, one of which is a piece of painted natural or improvised furniture, won by Grace Ann Furnas.
Other winning exhibits were:
Window curtains, Karen Chown; window curtain, Marilyn Essex; dresser scarf, Mary Trafton; dresser scarf, Lola Brenneman; slip covers for chairs, Joan Brus; slip covers for chairs, Shirley Gifford; decorative pillow cover, Pat O’Toole; book cover or portfollo, Wilma Welk; book cover or portfolio, Paula Ladeoff; reclaimed picture frame Janet Brown; rreclaimed picture frame, Donna Eichelberger.

Picture: Record Prices Are paid When 4-H Baby Beef Auction Is Held at Fair.
West Liberty – Approximately 136 baby beeves were sold for prices ranging up to $63 per 100 pounds at eh Four-H club Baby beef auction which headlined activities at the West Liberty Fair this morning. The picture here was taken by a journal cameraman while the sale was in progress.
The top price of $63 per hundredweight was paid by the West Liberty State Bank and the West Liberty Fair association, as joint buyers, for the reserve champion of the Four-H club show, an Angus calf, weighing about 1,000 pounds, shown by Beverly Irey of West Branch.
Second high price was $35 per 100 pounds paid by the Dubuque Packing Co. for a Hereford baby beef owned by Richard Peizer. A senior Angus, shown by Jack Broders, was bought for $33 per 100 pounds by the West Liberty Fair association and a Hereford calf, shown by Roger Braun, went to the Ray Wuestenberg Agency of West Liberty for $32 a hundred. A number of Muscatine firms were among those purchasing Beeves.
Five auctioneers conducted the sale, Fred Albin of West Branch, Paul Klotz of Columbus Junction, H. W. Kreischmar of Wilton, Charles Sywassink of Muscatine and Dewey Gibson of West Liberty. Sam Buckman served as clerk.

West Liberty – to Marilyn Doerfer, who resided on rural route No. 2 and who is a member of the Sweetland Sunshine club, went the honor of submitted the best long-tie personal expense account record. She will be another Muscatine county representative in completion at the state fair in Des Moines next week. Miss Doerfer was inspecting her record book when this picture, and others appearing on this page, were taken by a Journal cameraman.
