Factories The Grange Factory, built on the northeast corner of Mulberry and Third Street as a result of the Grange Movement by the Patrons of Husbandry. The Muscatine Manufacturing Company was formed with capital stock of $50,000. Cost of the building was $10,000, raised by S.K. Howe by subscription. Plans were drawn by William H. Price. Contract let to Hiram Rowland, work was begun September 15, and completed December 1, 1874, and machinery started January 2, 1875. Samuel McNutt was the first President, succeeded by Lindley Hoopes; Mollie Eversmeyer, Secretary. William Price, Superintendent. 44-Graham

Fire Department Relief Hook and Ladder Company, organized April 12, 1877, with Lyman Banks, Captain. Fire Department The original Champion Hose Company, Number 1, first organized January 7, 1875 as the Champion Fire Company, and took charge of the Champion Chemical Engine received by the city February 27, 1875, the name being changed to Champion Hose Company Number 1 when the company was supplied with a hose cart in May of 1876. Fires Burning of Miller's Barn. The burning at 11 o'clock at night in the early winter of 1855, of Frederick Miller's feed stable, which stood in the rear of the blacksmith shop near his brick "Muscatine Hotel" on the lot at the northwest corner of Fourth and Mulberry, the barn containing at the time over 100 horses, all being saved but 16. Garrettson, G. A. Water Street in 1866. G.A. Garrettson, successor to Garrettson and Wiley, had just moved into his new building, now 109-111 West Front Street. Succeeded by G.A. Garrettson and Company (G.A.G. and F.E. Blackman). In 1880 G.A. Garrettson and Son sold to Gobble Brothers (J.M. and T.M.) after 1884, J.M. Gobble and Company, later, J. M. Gobble Company, M. Block and Company (Marx Block and R.T. Wallace) had occupied the building on left, now 113 West Front Street, before 1859. The log hotel of Frederick Miller who bought a double log cabin on the northwest corner of 4th and Mulberry in 1844, made an addition for a blacksmith shop, converted the whole into a hotel, built a shop and stable on the alley and in 1849 erected on the site of the log cabin the brick "Muscatine Hotel", then 2 stories, a lower story having been underbuilt in 1857, and run for a few years afterward by J.H. Built by Josiah Parvin in 1840, and opened by him in February 1841 as :Parvin's Brick Hotel", at first 2 stories high, lower side underbuilt in 1852 when street was graded and rear part added by T.M. Isett, the owner, who sold the building in 1866 to Abraham Smalley. Conducted as the "Clover House" from November 1850 by Clover and Crane, succeeded by D.W. Clover, F.L. Downing, B. Crabb, and H.Y. and W.C. Iddings until September 1857, then as "Mason's Hotel" by B.A. Mason until 1862, by John Eichelberger and by Mr. Clements as the "Eichelberger House" to October, 1865, by Woodford and Galyean as the "St. Charles Hotel" to June 1867, again as the 12-Graham
Hotels Continued from cell above: "Eichelberger House" until May of 1868; for the next 12 years as the "National Hotel" by Mrs. M. J. Hess (1st 7 years), then by John D. Moss, J. A. Ledgerwood, Jacob Bowman, F. Coleman, Flowers Family, (1878-79), the headquarters of the Flowers Family Band, after 1880 known at the "Eastern House' under L. Frazier, J.C. Manchester, M.W. Avery, and George Bartlett. Known as the "Kemble House" since 1885. Letter with engraving was sent by a citizen, boarding in 1855 at the "Clover House", to eastern relatives, and brought here by them the following year. 12-Graham
Hotels The Ogilvie House, built by Adam Ogilvie in 1851-52, completed and opened in November, 1852. Early proprietors, D.W. Clover, Usher and Thayer, Low and Eichelberger, Low and Skinkle, George Low, Phineas Gillett, Sherwood and Won, W.H. Foyle, Isaac Mauck, G.F. Mauck, Canney and Ackley, J.H. Canney, R.M. Baker. The latter purchased it in 1875, changed the name to "Commercial", and the next year he built a four story addition on the rear. Afterward conducted by J.W. Varner, J.J. Phillips, J.E. Clark, Sherwood Kerr, etc. In Album 1, page 27. 139-Graham
Hotels The PENNSYLVANIA HOUSE, formerly "Iowa House", 1st hotel, northwest corner of Chestnut and Water Streets, built for Robert C. Kinney, rear portion in 1836, the front in 1837-8. Leased by Captain William Frye from 1841-1844, then by James Borland for 2 years. Bought in 1847 by John G. Stein, and run by him as "Iowa House" to October 1853, "Stein's Hotel" to May, 1856, and as "Pennsylvania House" until his death on January 29, 1872. Gal Bitzer, proprietor, July 1872 to March 1875, then bought by Thomas Grigg and called "Grigg House";Thomas Grett. Torn down in spring of 1880. 17-Graham

Hotels Ogilvie House in 1866. Built by Adam Ogilvie in 1851, northwest corner of Iowa Avenue and Water Street. J.S. Hatch and Company opened first wholesale grocery under it in 1851, followed in 1857 by Bowers and Mauck. Shammo, Cummins, and Hook, a new firm, began January 1, 1866, succeeded by Shammo and Cummins, who moved out in 1866. The railroad ticket office of the Mississippi and Missouri Railroad was located there from November 20, 1855 until August 1866 when the C.R.I. & P. bought the M & M and built the first passenger depot at the foot of Linn Street. Changed to "Commercial" in 1875. 24-Graham

Lower story underbuilt in 1857 after grading. Opened December 13, 1851 and run until 1855 as the "Pennsylvania House" by Isaac Neidig, succeeded by George Sowdon, and from 1855 to 1868 as the "Irving House" by A. Kimball, W.W. Arnold, G.W. Wilkerson, C.G. Mathis, Mrs. M.J. Hess. Changed to "Park House" in 1868 by C.G. Mathis, owner since 1859. After 1870, run by Mrs. E. Smith, Mr. Swafford, J.R. Waldron, and Mr. Jarvis; and by J.K. Scott as the "Scott House" from May 25, 1873 to March 15, 1875. After that as "Park House" by Dale Brothers, Isaac Sharpless, James F. Stevens, Montgomery Klotz, Philip Mayer and Company, Fred K. Lunenberg; and as "Wilson House" in 1879 and 1880 by J.H. and J.G. Wilson. Afterward called "Park House" and "Globe House". Burned December 15, 1881, and rebuilt as a 3 story tenement. Jerry Carl's ice cream parlor and Charles Kern's meat market underneath. 43-Graham

Hotels The old "Vanier Hotel" or "Lawson House", built of hewn oak, and opened as a hotel in 1837-8 on the southwest corner of Iowa Avenue and 2nd Street by John Vanater, and run by Josiah Parvin in 1839-40. After a sketch by G.A. Funck as it appeared in the later 1840's when it was Squire Thomas Crandol's office and dwelling, the gable facing 2nd Street, the kitchen and porch soon afterward removed, excepting a platform, and stairs built on the Iowa Avenue side to a tailor shop above. Benjamin Middleton's meat and fish market occupied corner in later 1850's. Mainly a saloon and dwelling during the 1860's until moved by southwest corner 3rd and Sycamore in March 1869 for Silverman & Company's 3 story brick block. Present site of Muscatine State Bank. 7-Graham
Hotels The American House, built and opened in 1840 by T.S. Battelle as the "American House" on the northwest corner of Iowa Avenue and 2nd Street fronting on 2nd Street. Conducted as America House by James Borland after 1848, by Mark Kirkpatrick after November, 1851, and Samuel Teets after 1855. In 1857 the building was lowered to grand for business uses occupied first by Jackson and Stewart, then by Jackson and Lawther as a grocery, and in the early 1860's by John Mordhorst (Dutch John) as a meat shop and by John Ploen's saloon. Torn down in 1866 by L.W. Olds as a site for Old's Opera House, completed the next year. After a sketch by G.A. Funck as the hotel appeared in the year 1849. 8-Graham

Houses Home of Benjamin Hershey, built in 1885 on site of present Valley View Manor (Lutheran Homes). Hershey was a pioneer in the lumber business in Muscatine. He also farmed extensively, raised horses and Hereford cattle, and built a creamery near his home called the Star Creamery. The house was given to Reverend Henry Reinemund in 1895 by Mrs. Elizabeth Hershey for a childrens and old people's home. House was torn down in 1960. 333

Klein and Weaver, who remodeled it into a hospital, calling it Bellevue, ca. 1910. Later became a convalescent home called Riverview Heights, which closed in 1970's. 628

Finished throughout with black walnut. Bought for $2500 in 1874 by Peter Musser and extensively remodeled. Pictures shows a 1 1/2 story house, Greek Revival style, surrounded by picket fence; four pillars, and portico on front. Remodeled in Italianate and Second Empire styles, with full second story and 3rd floor. Now 501 East Mississippi Drive at Mulberry. At one time this was a fasionable residential part of town.
