Factories | The Grange Factory, built on the northeast corner of Mulberry and Third Street as a result of the Grange Movement by the Patrons of Husbandry. The Muscatine Manufacturing Company was formed with capital stock of $50,000. Cost of the building was $10,000, raised by S.K. Howe by subscription. Plans were drawn by William H. Price. Contract let to Hiram Rowland, work was begun September 15, and completed December 1, 1874, and machinery started January 2, 1875. Opened December 13, 1851 and run until 1855 as the "Pennsylvania House" by Isaac Neidig, succeeded by George Sowdon, and from 1855 to 1868 as the "Irving House" by A. Kimball, W.W. Arnold, G.W. Wilkerson, C.G. Mathis, Mrs. M.J. Hess. Changed to "Park House" in 1868 by C.G. Mathis, owner since 1859. After 1870, run by Mrs. E. Smith, Mr. Swafford, J.R. Waldron, and Mr. Jarvis; and by J.K. Scott as the "Scott House" from May 25, 1873 to March 15, 1875. After that as "Park House" by Dale Brothers, Isaac Sharpless, James F. Stevens, Montgomery Klotz, Philip Mayer and Company, Fred K. Lunenberg; and as "Wilson House" in 1879 and 1880 by J.H. and J.G. Wilson. Afterward called "Park House" and "Globe House". Burned December 15, 1881, and rebuilt as a 3 story tenement. Hotels | The old "Vanier Hotel" or "Lawson House", built of hewn oak, and opened as a hotel in 1837-8 on the southwest corner of Iowa Avenue and 2nd Street by John Vanater, and run by Josiah Parvin in 1839-40. After a sketch by G.A. Funck as it appeared in the later 1840's when it was Squire Thomas Crandol's office and dwelling, the gable facing 2nd Street, the kitchen and porch soon afterward removed, excepting a platform, and stairs built on the Iowa Avenue side to a tailor shop above. Benjamin Middleton's meat and fish market occupied corner in later 1850's. Mainly a saloon and dwelling during the 1860's until moved by southwest corner 3rd and Sycamore in March 1869 for Silverman & Company's 3 story brick block. Hotels | The American House, built and opened in 1840 by T.S. Battelle as the "American House" on the northwest corner of Iowa Avenue and 2nd Street fronting on 2nd Street. Conducted as America House by James Borland after 1848, by Mark Kirkpatrick after November, 1851, and Samuel Teets after 1855. In 1857 the building was lowered to grand for business uses occupied first by Jackson and Stewart, then by Jackson and Lawther as a grocery, and in the early 1860's by John Mordhorst (Dutch John) as a meat shop and by John Ploen's saloon.
