SHIELDS-BRICK

Lettie Shields and her husband Dan Brick moved to the Center Ridge area before the turn of the century. It is my understanding that Dan Brick was a rather large cattle feeder for his time. They were blessed with two children, Chester Arthur and Margaret. Chester married Laura Hornby and to this union two girls were born, Hazel and Mabel. This family lived in the family home for a while and then moved to Lorah, Iowa, then Atlantic and Council Bluffs and finally retired in Elliott. Hazel married a man whose last name was Klotz. They lived their married life in Council Bluffs where their daughter Margery was born in 1927. Margery married in 1956 Kirk Wahley of Council Bluffs and in 1966 Margery died. Mabel married (1) Ivan McGinnis (2) Paul S. Toay. Mabel had one son, Rex McGinnis who married Grace Gelham and they in turn had one daughter, Kelley Ann McGinnis. Margaret Brick never married. She graduated from Drake University and taught piano in Elliott for several years. She then returned to Drake and then taught Home Economics and later Science in the Des Moines Schools for many years. Dan and Lettie Brick were staunch members of the Church of Christ in Elliott. Hazel remembers that her grandfather Dan was Secretary-Treasurer of the church for many years; possibly at the time the present building was erected.
