ELLIOTT
AMVETS POST 35
Elliott Amvet Post 35 was organized following
World War II, in early 1946. The first commander is reported to be
Banks Ferguson. Their meetings and some good stag parties were held
at the present location of the Clip and Curl. The Amvets in
cooperation with the local businessmen published a History of
Veterans of World War II and Gold Star Boys and gave copies to
parents of Gold Star Boys.
AMERICAN LEGION NORBERT T. WILSON POST NO. 490
Following World War I, their was
interest in establishing an American Legion Post in Elliott, so in
Dec. 1919, Bill Nease and Joel Boone approched LeRoy Johnson, Red
Oak, (now a Judge) to pursue the organization of same. After further
meetings a charter was issued and countersigned on Aug. 10, 1920 in
the name of American Legion Norbert T. Wilson Post No. 490, Elliott,
Ia. First Commander was Prof. E. P. Simmons, and Adjutant, Del Kipp.
The American Legion National Chaplain Pat McDermott assisted in
funeral services for Norbert T. Wilson who died from influenza in
World War !. The Post was not active too long, as members moved away
from the area, and the Post was disbanded.
