LEE MEWHIRTER

     Lee Allen Mewhirter was born July 24, 1899, in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, the son of Henry Jesse and Flora Belle Wilson Mewhirter. He attended the Elliott Schools.

     Lee A. married Effie Susanna Maxwell, daughter of John Albin and Anna Wilhelmina Hult Maxwell, Aug. 30, 1928. Effie S. was born Aug. 11, 1908 in Montgomery County, Iowa.

    Mr. and Mrs. Mewhirter farmed in Pottawattamie, Montgomery and Cass counties. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1978, at the United Methodist Church, Elliott, Iowa.

    Four sons were born to this marriage: Thomas Lee, born June 12, 1929 - Joe Bernard, born Sept. 18, 1931 - Jack Arnold, born Mar. 16, 1937 - and James Richard, born Feb. 12, 1938.

    Jack A. graduated from Elliott High School in 1955. He attended Northwest Missouri State University and graduated from the University of Nebraska, Omaha, Nebraska in 1965. He served three years in the U. S. Army (1959-1962). he married Barbara Ann Herron, May 1, 1959, at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. She was the daughter of Ralph and Louise Herron and was born April 20, 1938, in Red Oak, Iowa. Three children were born to this marriage: Robin Lynn, born Oct. 3, 1959 - Tracey Sue, born June 28, 1966 - and Ben Arnold, born June 29, 1968.

    Thomas L. graduated from Elliott High School in 1947 and spent four years in the U. S. Air Force (1951- 1955).  He married Betty Jean Scott Nov. 20, 1949, in Red Oak, Iowa. She was born Aug. 15, 1928, the daughter of Fred and Gertrude Scott, Red Oak, Iowa. Two children were born to this marriage: Debra Lee, born Dec. 18, 1952, and Gregory Allen, born March 14, 1956. Debra L. was married to Steven Howard Straw, son of Howard and Leona Straw on Aug. 14, 1976.

    Joe B. graduated from Elliott High School in 1949 and from Northwest Missouri State University in 1960. He served three years in the U. S. Marine Corps (1951-1954). He was married to Barbara Lou Milner, Aug. 10, 1952, in Elliott. She was the daughter of Gerald and Lou Milner and was born Feb. 11, 1934 in Montgomery County. Two children were born to this marriage: Jeffrey Ross, born may 30, 1957, and Cheryl Jo, born June 22, 1958. 

    James R. graduated from Elliott High School in 1955 and from Northwest Missouri State University in 1960. He served four years and seven months in the U. S. marine Corps (1960-1965). He married Martha K. Ricke may 26, 1962, in Red Oak, Iowa. She was born Jan. 17, 1942 in Beatrice, Nebraska, the daughter of William and Dorothy Ricke. Three children were born to this marriage: Leigh Ann born Feb. 15, 1963. Erin Susanne, born Aug. 18, 1966, and Jay Ricke, born Nov. 17, 1967
