PAUL LATHROP

 

   Leonard Paul Lathrop was born July 19, 1887 near Lawrence, Kansas, the son of William Henry Lathrop and Suzie Laura Wadsworth.  He attended rural and Elliott High School and an engineering school in Omaha. He married Mabel Blanche DeWitt at the home of her parents in Pilot Grove Twp. on April 12, 1916. She was the daughter of Emery Allison DeWitt and Alta Saphronia Spicer. Mabel was born July 16, 1891. She attended rural school and graduated from Elliott High School in 1909.

   They farmed in Pilot Grove Twp. - first on the Ollie Hallcock farm then moved to the Alvin DeWitt farm in 1919 and to the Emery DeWitt farm in 1936. In 1951 they bought this farm where their grandson, Curtis Peterson and his family live and farm now.

   They were the parents of three daughters, Mary Helen (Mrs. Maurice Peterson), Frances Lucille (Carlson), and Lois Pauline (Keener).

   Mary Helen, born August 24, 1918 graduated from Red Oak High School in 1936 and then taught school in Douglas Twp. for two years. On June 4, 1938 she married Maurice Peterson-born Jan. 4, 1917, the son of John Emil and Emma Otelia Peterson. They were the parents of three children, Richard Delaine born Oct. 18, 1940 married Norma Jean McCunn on Sept. 24, 1960. They are the parents of four children, Kimberly Dawn (1961), Robert Delaine (1967), John Maurice (1970), and Nicole Rae (1971). Richard is a partner in a Phillips 66 Oil business in Elliott where they now live. Curtis Leroy born May 6, 1944 married Linda Sue White on Dec. 14, 1968. They are the parents of three sons, Scott Christopher, Michael James, and Curtis Leroy, Jr. They farm in Pilot Grove Twp. Mary Ann born Oct. 15, 1948 married Dennis W. Smith on May 11, 1968. They are the parents of three children, Brian Jeffery, Amy Marie, and Carl Jean. Mary Anne graduated from Griswold High School and Nebraska Methodist School of Nursing. Dennis is a minister with the Church of Christ. They live in Oakley, Kansas.

   Maurice Peterson was killed in a farm accident in 1959. He is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak.

   Frances Lucille born September 11, 1920 graduated from Red Oak High and Junior College. She was a teacher in Montgomery Co. schools before working for Union Pacific in Omaha. She married Glen L. Carlson of Red Oak on March 20, 1946They are the parents of three children. Susan Lee, a graduate of ISU, married Richard Johnson in August 1976. They are the parents of one daughter, Lisa Anne, born in Zaire, Africa where they are Missionaries. Peggy Louise married Robert Blackburn of Des Moines. They have three sons, Timothy, Todd and Paul. They live in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where Bob is a computer programmer. Roger L. married Kathy Scott, they live and farm near Red oak, Iowa.

   Lois Pauline born November 22, 1922 graduated from Red Oak School, attended Jr. College and graduated from Immanuel Lutheran School of Nursing. She served 9 months in the Philippines as an army nurse during World War II. In December 1946 she married Robert L. Keener and they moved to Oregon and later to California. They are parents of three daughters. Linda Lee is a Home Ec teacher in Montana, married William McGregor. They are parents of three sons, Robb, Ian, and Liam. Shawnee Arlida is an airline hostess, she married Bob Lupin. They have one son, Jeremy. Paula Lucille is a college graduate. She married Stuart Weedn. They live in California.

   Paul and Mabel were active members of the Pilot Grove Methodist Church. He was superintendent of the Sunday School for many years. He also served on the Pilot Grove school board. They left three daughters, nine grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. She passed away in 1953 and Paul in 1963. They are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak, Iowa.
