LEROY BAKER

LeRoy Lawerence Baker was born November 19, 1915 in Sherman Twp., the son of Warren C. and Maude Petty Baker. He attended Stennett Consolidated Schools, graduating in 1934. He married R. Elizabeth Penwell at Red Oak, July 24, 1936. She was the daughter of David C. and Eva Cynthia Penwell of the Stennett vicinity. She was born in Montgomery County, February 16, 1919 and attended country grade schools near Mortons Mill and graduated from high school at Stennett in 1936. They lived at Stennett where LeRoy drove trucks for his brother Floyd for several years, farmed a few years south of Elliott and south of Mortons Mill before moving to Elliott in 1947. At this time he purchased trucking interests from Victor Godfrey and continued in this business for nearly 25 years, going from the straight trucks to truck and pup, to the ‘semis’ to the ‘pots’. At various times during these years LeRoy served on the City Council, as volunteer fireman and as Fire Chief.

During these years four children were born: Jerald, Joy, Marlin (stillborn) and Elizabeth Ann.

Jerry was married March 23, 1963 to Lois Wardell of Washington State, following his discharge from the Navy. He began his work with the National Forest Service at that time and is living presently at Stone Mt., Georgia. They have two children, Leslie Ann and David.

Joy was married to Thomas Shellberg Feb. 6, 1960 and they live at Elliott with their six daughters: Catherine, Patricia, Teresa, Tamara, Linda and Jacalyn.

Ann was married to Robert Myers of Griswold on Oct. 10, 1966. They have two children, James and Rachel. They live presently at Afton, Ia., where they are associated with the school system.
