Montgomery County, Iowa
Harry Stevens, 1879-1951
Harry was the youngest son of Erial and Rose Stevens. He was born Oct. 14, 1879 and died Nov 3, 1951. In 1898, at the age of 18, Harry enlisted in Co. M of the 51st Regt of the Iowa Infantry (mostly men from Montgomery Co, IA)
and was sent to the Philippines to fight in the Spanish American War.
On his return from the Philippines, he went to work for the Osborne Publishing Co (later Murphy Calendar Co) on the presses and then as a grocery clerk but decided he wanted to go back to San Francisco ca 1903 and was
there during the famous San Francisco earth quake and fire in 1906. Soon after, he returned again to Red Oak to open a laundry business--the Red Star Laundry-- in Red Oak with his older brothers. In 1908, at the age of 28,
he married Bonnie Watkins of Red Oak. The couple had 3 children: daughters Margery b. 1909 and Loie b. 1910; and son Randolph Erial "Jack", b. 1915. With the exception of two years when they lived in Ogden, UT, the family
remained in Red Oak. Around 1932, Harry became the Court Bailiff and continued in that occupation until his death on Nov 3, 1951. He and wife Bonnie Stevens are buried in Red Oak, along with daughter Marjorie who died at the age of 10.
