J. E. Stemen, 67, resident of this city for more than 30 years and a
railway express man for more than 38 years, died Sunday evening at 11:15
at his home, 606 Corning st., where he had been ill for more than a year
and a half. Death came as the result of a heart attack. Mr. Stemen was
agent for the Railway Express Company here for many years, until illness
compelled him to retire.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from Perryman’s
funeral chapel, with Rev. Chas. A. Speagh, pastor of the First
Presbyterian Church officiating. Pallbearers were Axel Carlson, J. D.
Smith, Arthur Schmidt, Will Irwin, Ralph Spencer, Ralph Franklin, Roy
Edwards and Will Roberts. Interment was in
Evergreen cemetery.
John Ellsworth Stemen was born at Elida, Ohio, Sept. 29, 1869, the son
of Mr. and Mrs. William Stemen. When a young man, he moved to Wyanet,
Illinois, where he entered business as a commercial photographer, later
taking up express work. A short time later he was transferred to
Chariton, and in 1906 was sent to Red Oak, where he resided until the
time of his death. On Nov. 8, 1896, he was married to Jennie M. Hardin
at Chariton, and to them was borne one son, Edward, of Brooklyn, N. Y.
Mrs. Stemen died here Jan. 8, 1934, and the following year, Feb. 19,
1935, he was married at Rockport, Mo., to Mrs. Alta Gilmore, who
survives with his son.
Mr. Stemen was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Masonic lodge,
Order of Easter Star, and the Low Twelve Masonic orders at Red Oak and
Oskaloosa. A brother, Will Stemen, of Elida, Ohio, also survives.
