John C. Garvin, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. E. Henderson, on
Thursday evening, October 23, was in his 85th year. He was born in Hill, PA,
Nov. 27, 1834, and was married April 4, 1869, at Hastings, Iowa, to Susan M.
Thompson, who died eight years ago.
He was the father of nine children, the following **seven of whom survive: Mrs.
C. E. Henderson and Mrs. R. M. Adkins, of Red Oak; Mrs. Minnie Ashby, Hoover,
Wash., Braden Garvin, Port Arthur, Tex.; Mrs. Blanche Holbrook, Kelse, Wash.;
John Garvin, Glendale, Ariz.
Mr. Garvin was a member of the Fifth Iowa Cavalry during the Civil War and was
a member of the G. A. R. Post and the Presbyterian church. He lived in Mills
County until 1891, moved from there to Alvin, Texas, and returned here to make
his home three years ago.
The funeral was held at the Henderson home Saturday morning. Rev. Wm. Murchie
preaching the sermon. The pall bearers were Jacob Wolfe, Geo. T. Cooper, D.
Nicoll, Henry Gephart, S. D. Soliday and Geo. Spears.
Those who were here from
a distance to attend the funeral were Mrs. Anna Creamer, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Cain
and daughter, from Henderson; David Henderson and children, Fred and Nellie,
from Hastings. Burial was in Red Oak cemetery. Many friends extend sympathy to
the sorrowing relatives.

**John's daughter Eva Durham died earlier in February 1919. The newspaper must have been unaware of her death. He had 2 other children that preceded him in death; Gavin Garvin and Edna Garvin
