Nate Brown, 75, A Civil War Veteran, Answers Last Taps
Dies Suddenly at His Home of Heart Failure Thursday Afternoon
Nate Brown, veteran of the Civil War, a resident of Montgomery County for thirty-five years, died at his home, 202 Maple Street, Thursday afternoon. His death came suddenly. He was 75 years old.
Funeral services for Mr. Brown were held from the residence Saturday afternoon. Rev. Clark Comstock, pastor of the Christian church of which Mr. Brown was a member, delivered the funeral sermon. The services were in charge of the Grand Army Interment was in Red Oak Junction Cemetery.
Mr. Brown's death was unexpected. During the past five months he had not enjoyed the best of health but he was active in his home. He ate a light dinner Thursday noon and then reclined on the couch to rest. His son, Will, who has been making his home with his father, went out to do some shopping. When he returned, he found his father seriously ill. Ten minutes later Mr. Brown died. An attending physician gave the cause of death as heart failure.
Mr. Brown had made his home in this county for thirty-five years. When he came here in 1886 he took up farming on what was known as the Hamilton forty south of Red Oak. He retired from active life and moved to his home on Maple Street in 1897.
It was in 1864 that Mr. Brown entered the Civil War, enlisting at Waterloo. He was a member of Company A, 8th Iowa Infantry.
He was born in Licking County, Ohio, September 4, 1847. In 1871, he was married to Nellie Stephenson near Ft. Dodge. She preceded her husband in death 34 years ago. Before coming to Red Oak, Mr. Brown was engaged in farming in Indiana, Nebraska and Kansas.
Mr. Brown is survived by four children, Will, Mrs. Mildred McMullen and Mrs. Eva Bryan, all of Red Oak, and Tom, of Pueblo, Colo.
Mrs. Bryan was suffering with a severe illness at the time of her father's death and was not apprised of his passing until Saturday.
