Julius V. Bliss was born in Oneida County, New York, Aug. 31, 1835, and died
at his home in this city Saturday, July 1, 1899. He was united in marriage to
Miss Abby Stanton Feb 5, 1863, by the Rev. H. H. White. Eight children were
born to them, six of whom are living and suffer with the bereaved widow the
pangs of a great sorrow.
The deceased united with the Congregational Church in
1868. In 1875, seven years later, he came to the fellowship of the Methodist
Episcopal church. Thus thirty-one years of his life have been spent within the
church of God. The last public service he was permitted to attend was the
Lincoln memorial service Feb. 12, 1899.
He enlisted in Company D, 78th New York volunteers, Nov. 5, 1861, and was
discharged for disability Nov. 15, 1862. To him belongs the honor of having
been a charter member of Garfield Post G. A. R. of our city. His manner of
life was never artificial but earnest and sincere. The rich promises of the
gospel are all his and to them we devoutly commend the sorrowing widow and her
fatherless children.
The church joins in mourning the death of her fallen son and prays for the
richest benediction of heaven upon the sorrowing members of the family to whom
in addition to other burdens, is laid the burden of a great sorrow in which
God alone can be his comforter.
The funeral service waas held July 2nd at 5 p.m. being conducted by the Rev.
A. M. Shea. The ladies of the Relief Corps, the members of Garfield Post and a
large number of friends attended the sad service.
