ALLEN, James died at 3:15 o'clock on Sunday afternoon, March 29, at his home
at 1010 Fifth Street, his death being due to pneumonia after an illness
extending through the past several weeks.
He was born on November 26, 1840, in Rutland, Penn, and was married to Miss
Harriet K. Bryant at Potter, Penn, on October 3, 1804. Besides the widow, he
leaves also a sister, Mrs. L. L. Frost, of Marionville, MO.
Mr. Allen came to Montgomery County in 1868, purchasing a farm one mile west
of Coburg where he resided until 1892, when he came to Red Oak to make his
home. He was a member of the Christian Church a charter member of the G.A.R.
being among the first to volunteer in the Civil War and serving in Company K
5th Penn. volunteers until the summer of 1862 when he was severely wounded on
the second day of the Seven Days' Battle at Richmond.
The funeral was held at the Christian Church at 2:30 o'clock on Wednesday
afternoon, Rev. C. L. McKim having charge of the service. Interment was made
in Evergreen cemetery. Those from a distance in attendance at the funeral were
the sister, Mrs. L. L. Frost and her son, Sydney, of Marionville, MO., Mr. and
Mrs. Joe Allen and J. C. Benz, of Eagle, Neb.
Mr. Allen always had a life of high moral rectitude, and his death comes as a
severe blow to his family and associates. The many friends of the bereaved
ones extend sincere sympathy to them in their hour of sorrow.
