From Camp Dodge, the 168th Inf. was taken to the Polk County Fair grounds, loaded on a train and transported to Camp Mills, Long Island.  The arrived in mid-September 1917 and were taken into the 42nd Division along with troops from about a couple of dozen other states. Because of this diversity, the Division Chief of Staff Douglas MacArthur, renamed the group the Rainbow Division.
