       James Beard was born in Brown County, Ohio March 4, 1818. He died In Villisca, Iowa May 4, 1898. He moved from Brown County to Hillsboro, Highland County, Ohio early in life and was married there to Mrs. Mary Emily Powers January 8, 1844.   She had a daughter Harriet who married George Washington Higgins.
     He enlisted in the service of his country, as a volunteer, October 1863 in Company H, 12th Ohio Cavalry and served until mustering out at the close of the war.
     The family moved from Ohio to Illinois in 1868 and to Villisca, Iowa in September 1874. Mary Emily died November 2, 1885. Their children were Asa G. who married Mary Eliza Ashmore, Samantha Jane who married William Harvey Willett, Nancy Elizabeth who married George Graves, Wilson Benson, Zilpha Ann who married John Ashmore, George E. and Mary Alimeda who married George Marcell and then J. Wesley Stallings.
