Pekay Camp

What would be the mining camp of Pekay was established by the Whitebreast Coal Company
of Lucas County in February or March of 1892.It was located in Harrison Township, near the former
residence of Samuel Vance. The 80 foot deep shaft was located half way between ? and Iowa Central
school house and it opened out on March 31, 1892. The company had 500 acres of coal land under its
control and the vein was from 6 to 8 feet thick. The mine was on the Iowa Central Railroad junction
and reached a production capability of 1,? tons of coal per day with as many as ? miners employed there.
