DAVY CROCKETT'S WIFE - POLLY FINLEY
My purpose in printing this volume "James & Margaret (Pickens) Findley, Pioneers of Monroe
County, Iowa" is to update ALL of their descendants. I started out with great hope and
expectation to learn every name of all the descendants of the above. I felt especially confident in
finding them, as many of their seven children, namely Robert Findley who married Mary Henderson and Lavina Epperson, Jane Findley who married Robert Henderson, Sarah Findley
who married James Stewart, James Findley, II who married Lucinda Streeter, Lettie Findley who
married John Chance, Samuel Findley who married Mary Blanchard, and the last child, Margaret
Findley who married Robert Stewart, Jr., after a little checking, I found could still be traced in
Monroe County. So I started out thinking I would have full cooperation, that everyone would be
interested in their background, and even more, preserving the full record for the generations to
follow. In many cases this was true, but as I approached the time to start assembling the
manuscript with all the things that I wanted to include, I found that those that I had written had
still not found time to answer my letters for one reason or another and I had to write again. It was rewarding in most cases, even though you will find that names have been omitted because the information could not be found, as the letters I did receive back from people I discovered I had known for years, either from my home county of Monroe or classmates in school. Rather than being acquaintances from Monroe County they were indeed "cousins". With the heritage that comes from Monroe County in this Findley family line, came also the names of Henderson,
Chance and Stewart, in the early years and I began to think that I was related to nearly everyone
in the county. I guess my relatives before me in the 8th and 9th generations did make the
comment that it was almost necessary for them to go out of the county to marry or find themselves married to one of their cousins. This of course happened and has happened in many
families of the early days.
I, like most genealogists have tried to write an accurate record of this family, but I am sure having talked to many people, written many letters, etc., that you will find a great-grandmother whose name is not spelled as you have found it in your own records. Public records that I have checked have often misspelled both the given name and the surname.
This history is a never ending project, and much more time could have been spent in assembling
this book. However, I had promised that it would be available at the 1981 Findley Reunion and
wanted to hold to that promise.
I used two books for much of my background information, namely Mrs. Alverta Martin’s book
"The Findley Family History", written in 1968 and Mr. Herald Stout's book "The Clan Finley"
which have helped tremendously.
Mrs. Alverta Martin's book was re-printed and available at the 1980 Findley Reunion and tells of
the very early Findley's in Virginia and Tennessee and their trip to Indiana and then into Missouri
and finally into Monroe Co., Iowa. Mr. Stout's book traces Findley's back to the Kings of Ireland
and Scotland and I have appreciated his expert advice and his book that served to give us very early lineage and some interesting Scottish history. A quote from his book..."free use of any data
herein is not only permitted but encouraged, if by so doing the knowledge of this stalwart Clan
may be the more thoroughly disseminated”.
I will attempt to list the names of those that I have written to and they sent family data and stories. My apologies to those that I might forget to mention at this time.

James & Margaret (Pickens) Findley, Pioneers of Monroe County Iowa compiled by Phyllis
Franzen (1802 1st Ave. W. Newton, Iowa 50208) in 1981.
This book starts with James Findley, Sr. and his wife Margaret Pickens Findley. James Findley,
Sr. has previously been numbered
6-02-----
6 = Generation in America. (This number will change each generation. For example, James and
Margaret Findley's children will be #7.)
02 = A family number established by another source ("The Clan Findley", by Herald Stout) and
we will keep this number throughout the Findley line.
Information in this genealogy will begin with the children of James and Margaret Findley,
starting with and completing each of these families separately. The families are as follows:
7-02-A Robert Findley married Mary Henderson & Lavina Epperson
7-02-B Jane Findley married Robert Henderson
7-02-C Sarah Findley married James Stewart
7-02-D James Findley, Jr. married Lucinda Streeter
7-02-E Lettie Findley married John Chance
7-02-F Samuel Findley married Mary Amanda Blanchard
7-02-G Margaret Findley married Robert Stewart, Jr.
The letter of the alphabet has been added for children of James and Margaret Findley (7-02-A
Robert Findley will be affixed to all descendants of Robert Findley; "B" will be Jane Findley
Stewart, etc., through 7-02-G Margaret Findley Stewart.)
Beginning with the 8th generation a number will be added following the letter of the alphabet,
for instance 8-02-A1 is the first child of Robert Findley and Mary Henderson. This information
will have at least 13 generations, therefore some of the recent generation numbers will be,
13-02-A193111.
The number in the left margin will be the individual being written about. The number directly
opposite in the right margin will be the parents of the individual, the children of the individual
will be numbered, so you may advance or reverse the order to find the information on any one
person.
ACCORDING to Gælic tradition, the Scots derived their name from Scota, a daughter of the
Pharaoh of the Exodus, who married Milesius, a descendant of Phenius, King of the Scythians in
Egypt, who had settled on the northern shores of the Bay of Biscay
.
Milesius saw the green island of Ireland and coveted it. Choosing four of his thirtytwo sons,
HEBER, HEREMON, ITH and IR, he sent them with a fleet of thirty ships to conquer it. After
one of the first successful amphibious landings, these sons and their followers overcame the race
in possession and assumed sovereignty. Irish genealogy begins with this legendary settlement and the four great race stems are those from which the leading families of Ireland trace their
beginnings.
The Finley genealogy connects itself with the royal house of Scotland through the marriage of
FINLAY McRUAIDGRI, Earl of Moray, with DONADA, the third daughter of MALCOLM II,
in 1005 AD. He was a lineal descendant of LORNE the first king of Scotland who reigned 470 -
501 A.D.
The following Finley lineage, up to, and including FEARCHAR (with whom the main part of
this genealogy starts,) is compiled from Manuscript Pedigrees at the Society of Genealogy,
London. Variance in spelling and in exact dates must be accepted; relying upon the quoted
references, the line is:
1. AONGUS TURRMHEACH, the Prolific, 83rd Ardrigh, or high monarch of Ireland, 384-328
B.C. 28th in descent from HEREMON, first king of Ireland.
2. ENNA AIghneach, the Hospitable, 313 - 293 B.C.
3.ASAMAN EAMNATH
4. ROIGHIAN
5. FIONNLOGHA
6. FINN, 92nd Ardrigh, married Bedonia, daughter of Crimthann.
7. EOCHY FEDLUCH, 93rd Ardrigh, 142 - 130 B.C. Married Clothfionn, daughter of Eachy
Uchliathan.
8. NAI, 96th Ardrigh, married Cloethia.
9. LUGAIDHREAB DERG, 98th Ardrigh, 35 - 9 B.C.
10. CRIMTHANNNIADAIE, the Heroic or Bashful, 8 B.C. - 9 A.D. Married Nair Tath Chaoch,
daughter of Loach, 100th Ardrigh.
11. FEREDACH FIONN, the Just, 102nd Ardrigh, 14 - 36 A.D.
12. FIACHA FIONNHOLAIA, of the White Oxen, 124th Ardrigh, 40 - 56 A.D. Married Eithne,
daughter of Imgheal, King of the Picts.
13. TUATHAL, the Acceptable, or Legitimate, 76 - 106, married Bain, daughter of Scal Dalbh,
king of Finland.
14. FEIDLIM, the Legislator, 110 - 119, married Ughua of Denmark.
15. CONN CETCHATHACH, of the Hundred Battles, 138-173, married Landabana, daughter of
Crimthenn, King of Lienster, in Ireland. This union started a reign of chieftains, who, titled
Dalriadic kings, supplied Alban, the modern Scotland, with its first Scot rulers
.
16. SOADIA, his daughter, married Conary II, King of Ireland and a descendant of Conary the
Great, king of Munster.
I7.CARBRY RIADA, who established a monarchy in the (now) County Antriml, Ireland, in the
Third Century set up the first Irish colony in Scotland.
18. COLLA UAISH, king of Tara, invaded Emaina, Ireland and ruled the territory known as
Dalriada.
19. EOCHAIDH, the Valiant, or the Red-haired, was a chief of Dulriada.
20. ERC, king of Dalriada, 430, had three sons, LORNE, ANGUS and FERGUS, who set up the
first successful colony in Scotland at Argyl in 470
. LORNE, the eldest, for whom the territory
in western Scotland is named, is said to have been the first Milesian king. ANGUS McERC, his
brother, held fief of Islay and other regions.
21. FERGUS McERC, the youngest son, survived his older brothers, consolidating the kingdom
with its seat at Dunstaffnage on the west coast of the Sound of Mull. He is considered the "father
of the dynasty" since his sons, not those of LORNE, ruled in Scotland. [This gave trouble.
MACBETH, later, through a descendant of LORNE, was regarded as an interloper]. FERGUS
was crowned in 501 A.D. The Lia Fail "stone of destiny" used in elevation of Irish kings was
brought from Tara for the occasion and never returned. It is now in Westminster Abbey.
FERGUS was drowned in a shipwreck off Carrick fergus ( Rock of Fergus) and his body washed
ashore in County Antrim.
22. DOMANGART, King of Dalradia, Scotland, 506 - 511, married Fedelima
. He was
succeeded by his son Congallus 1, 511 - 537.
23. GABHRAN, second son of DOMANGART, 537 - 560, married Lleian, daughter of Mrycan
Brechena, king of Brecknock, Wales. He was killed in battle with the Picts, still unsubdued, and
was, in accordance with the Laws of Tanistry, succeeded by his nephew, Congallus 11, 560-570.
24. AIDAN McGABHRAN 570 - 606, younger brother of GABHRAN, married Strathclyde, a
Briton. Feuds over the succession arose and for more than a century, in a period of quasianarchy
induced by the Irish system of chieftainship, kings rose and quickly fell.
25. EOCHAIDH BUIDHE 606 - 630, married a daughter of Congus, an English king.
26. DONALD BREAC 630 - 643, followed by CONALL 643 - 659.
27. DOMANGART 659 - 672. He was followed by FEARCHAR FADA, the Long, son of
FEREDACH, chief of the Clan of Lorne. After a successful battle with the Clan of Gabhran, he reigned 677 - 695.
28. EOCHAIDH KINNMAIL, 695 - 697, followed by short periods of rule by many others in
accordance with the Law of Tanistry
.
29. AADH FIONN 748 - 769, married Ethelbara, daughter of Cuthrea, king of West Saxony.
30. EOCHAIDH or EOCHA IV 769 - 819, married Urquisia, daughter of Urquia, a Pictish
princess. This was intended to stop hostilities with the Picts but was unsuccessful.
31. ALPIN 833 - 834, their son, became King of the Scots and the Picts; was killed in Battle of
Dundee, 21 July 834.
32. KENNETH McALPIN 834 - 863, King of Scotland, married Cinæth, daughter of Anicom of
the Isles, uniting Scotland. His brother Donald McAlpin succeeded him5.
33. CONSTANTINE, son of KENNETH, 863 - 881, married Nesta, a Welsh princess.
34 .DONALD IV reigned but one year 899 - 900.
35. MALCOLM I 942 - 954, married Beatrice of the Isles.
36. KENNETH II 975 - 995, was assassinated by Fenella, wife of Moamor of Angus.
37. MALCOLM II 1005 - 1034, murdered at Glamis. His second wife Ælifu had three daughters:
Bethoc who married Crinan, lay abbot of Dunkeld and chief of the House of Atholl, with their
son Duncin later becoming king; Alice wed Sigurd, Earl of Orkney; and
38. DONADA, married Finlay McRuaidhri, Earl of Moray, Thane of Ross and Cromarty, and
Chief of the Clan Fionnladh or Finlay. They had two sons: Malbride and
39. MACBOEDA or MACBETH, born 1005, reigned 1039 - 1057. He married Gruoch,
daughter of Bodhe, and widow of his own nephew Gilcomgain
. MACBETH lost Moray to
Sigurd, his brother-in-law, in an intraclan feud. Sigurd was then slain by Malcolm and
Gilcomgain, the latter being the father of Lulach, MACBETH's later step-son
. In the downfall
following the death of MACBETH at Lumphanen,
the Clan Fionnladh (Finlay) was outlawed.
Lulach was killed after but four months. The Clan went underground, taking the tartan and name of Farquharson.
40. MACBATHA McFINLAY, a younger son of MACBETH, 1060 - 1093, Thane of Cromarty; married Bethoca, daughter of Andrew McBrad (McBride).
41. RORY or RUARI McFINLAY was Thane of Cromarty 1152.
42. FERGUS McFINLAY also known as Farquhar Shaw of Rothumerches, was a tenant of Rossen, Cromarty 1210, married the heiress of Invercaula, Aberdeenshire.
43. EUGENIUS McFINLAY, a fourth son, also known as Shaw Farquhar(son), was murdered by Walter, Seneschal of Scotland, 1223. This is the claimed origin of the Clan Farquharson in Aberdeenshire.
44. FEARCHAR McFINLAY Iived in Aberdeenshire in 1236 and was recognized as the Chief of the proscribed Clan Fionnladh. With him, the pages of this family history begin.
