County Superintendent

Myria Harlow; 1 term served; Post Office Albia. Myria was also a member of the Board of the Iowa State Teachers' Reading Circle with a term expiring in 1911. The board met on the second Tuesday in February each year and adopted the books for the following year. The county superintendent is also the superintendent of the Reading Circle work of the county. When a teacher has pursued the prescribed work for the year the county superintendent issues a certificate for the work done. A diploma is awarded after four consecutive years of certificates. Iowa law required teachers to thoroughly read one professional book each year and submit proof of reading to the county superintendent to renew teaching certificate. The Reading Circle was organized for the purpose of selecting uniform professional reading texts. Members of the Circle are expected to read two books a year and own at least one of them.
