Miner Killed at Rex No. 5
Frank Sartshorn Fatally Injured in Fall of Slate Yesterday Morning.
While working in the mine at Rex No. 5 Wednesday morning, Frank Sartshorn[Hartshorn] was injured by a fall of slate about 10:30. While there was no one close at hand when the accident occurred, fellow workmen soon released him and started to bring him to the Miners hospital in Albia, but death relieved his suffering when the party reached Hiteman, only a short time after the accident. The body was returned to his home in Lovilia, where funeral services will be held either Friday or Saturday. Deceased, who was 29 years of age, leaves a wife and five children.

Frank Hartshorn of Lovilia died as a result of injuries received while working at Rex No. 5, Wednesday of last week. He was at work in a room with his brother, Harry and while in a stooping position, reaching for a chunk of coal to load into a car, was crushed by a fall of slate. His skull was fractured. The accident happened at 10:15 a.m.
He was loaded into an ambulance and started for the Albia hospital, but died shortly after leaving the mine.
the Hartshorn's moved to Lovilia recently from near Knoxville where he worked in the mines.
Frank Hartshorn, son of J. A. and Emma Hartshorn, was born in Colon, Iowa, January 11, 1894 and was killed at Rex No. 5, mine, October 17, 1923, aged 29 years, 9 months and 6 days.
He was united in marriage to Hazel Masters, June 6, 1914. To this union was born five children, Alice, Alberta, Francis, Bertha and Thomas.
He leaves to mourn his loss, a wife, five children, father and mother, one sister, Mrs. Flora Collins, two brothers, Edwin and Harry, all of Lovilia, besides a host of other relatives and friends.
He was a kind loving husband and father, a clean moral man, an obedient son, a good neighbor and will be missed by all.
Mr. Hartshorn was a miner by trade, being a driver for about eleven years and had only been digging coal for seven months, when a piece of slate fell and struck the fatal blow.
Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church, Lovilia, Friday afternoon, October 19, at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. M. E. Nehf. Burial was made in Woodlawn cemetery.
