The 1860 census was the eighth federal census and the census day was 1 June 1860. Time allotted was five months and total US population was 31.4 million, 14 percent slave. Questions asked were name; age; sex of each individual; whether white, black or mulatto; profession, occupation, or trade of each male and female over age fifteen; value of real estate; value of personal property; state, territory, or country of birth; whether married within the year; whether attended school within the year; whether could read and write, if over age twenty; whether deaf and dumb, blind, insane, idiotic, a pauper or a convict.
