Funeral Services for Mae Larson, 81, were held August 3, at the First Lutheran church in St. Ansgar. Burial was in the First Lutheran Cemetery, with the Rev. Stephen Engelstad officiating. Schroeder and Dunn Home of St. Ansgar was in charge of arrangements.
Helga Mae Tollefson was born July 25, 1896 at St. Ansgar, the daughter of Carl T. and Clara Oliva Lane Tollefson. Mae was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran church and was graduated from the St. Ansgar high school, attended Iowa State University, and Gates Business college in Waterloo.
April 18, 1931, she was married to J. Leland Larson. She lived in Independence, Cresco, Iowa and St. Ansgar.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leland, in 1953; her parents and a brother, Carl.
Surviving are her son Jim of Lombard, Ill.; three grandchildren; three sisters: Thelma, Mrs. Glenn Toolson of Twin Falls, Idaho, Clarice, Mrs. James Chase of Kalamazoo, Mich., and June, Mrs. Herbert Jones of LaPorte, Ind.

Ella Gunderson Larson McCulla

Funeral rites for a former St. Ansgar woman, Mrs. Ella McCulla, 92, were held Saturday at the Schroeder and Dunn Funeral Home in St. Ansgar. Mrs. McCulla died July 28 at a nursing home in Minneapolis. The Rev. Stephen Engelstad, pastor of the First Lutheran church in St. Ansgar, was in charge of the rites and burial was in the church cemetery.
Ella Gunderson was born Feb. 25, 1884 in Newburg township, Mitchell county, the daughter of John and Barbra Gunderson. She was baptized and confirmed at the First Lutheran church in St. Ansgar and attended the Otranto and St. Ansgar schools.
Peter Larson and Miss Gunderson were married Dec. 22, 1906 and farmed until his death Feb. 22, 1961. Her marriage to Herb McCulla took place Oct. 15, 1961 and they made their home in Greene until he died in 1969. At that time she moved to Minneapolis to be near her daughter.
Surviving are six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Those preceded her in death were her two husbands; one son, Duane Larson; one daughter, Clarice Feldt; and infant daughter; one grandson; 11 brothers and sisters.

Peter Andrew Larson

Funeral services were held Monday at the First Lutheran church in St. Ansgar for Peter A. Larson, 81, long time resident of the county, who died Thursday at Mitchell County Memorial Hospital. The Rev. Don Hamilton was in charge of the services, and burial was in the church cemetery.
Peter Andrew Larson, the son of Mrs. and Mrs. Peter Larson, was born on Dec. 23, 1879, in Brown County, Wis. He was baptized Jan 4, 1889, at Green Bay, Wis.
He moved Dec. 3, 1884, with his family to a farm near Meltonville. He attended the grade school at Otranto and later was a student at the St. Ansgar Seminary for two years. He was confirmed July 14, 1894, at the Deer Creek Lutheran church near Carpenter, by the Rev. Johann Olson.
On Dec. 22, 1906 he was married to Elinora Gunderson. They farmed in this community. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1956.
He had been taken seriously ill Nov. 12, and seemed to improve until he was stricken the day of his death.
He was the last surviving member of his family, being preceded in death by his parents, eight brothers and one sister. An infant daughter and a grandson also preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife and two children: Duane of Waterloo, Mrs. Raymond Feldt of Clam Falls, Wis. Also surviving are six grandchildren and one great grandson.

John Gunderson

John Gunderson, one of the oldest and best known residents of the St. Ansgar vicinity, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Anton Groth, after a long illness. Mr. Gunderson was 82 years of age, and had spent sixty-five years of them in and near St. Ansgar.
Mr. Gunderson and his wife, the latter before her marriage Barbara Thorsen, were born in Norway, but came to Osage when young people. They raised their family of ten children on a farm near St. Ansgar, and watched the community grow from a wilderness into one of the richest agricultural centers in the United States. They had their full share in its development, were worthy and respected citizens.
They retired from active life about five years ago, and since then had lived with their children, and part of the time was spent in Osage. In May of this year, Mrs. Gunderson passed away--just four months before her husband's death.
Surviving are the following children: Cecilia Habskjoold [Havskjold], of Krembin [Kremlin], Mont.; Gustav, Claresholm, Alberta, Canada; Ida Groth, St. Ansgar; George, St. Ansgar; Julius, Monarch, Alberta, Canada; Ella Larson, Mary Gaarder, St. Ansgar; Mrs. Mary Warrington, Osage; Gilbert, Alberta, Canada; Knute, St. Ansgar; Lillie Warrington, Osage. Gilbert and Nellie died in Infancy.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the Groth home at St. Ansgar at 1:30 o'clock, and at 2 o'clock at the Lutheran church, with interment at St. Ansgar.

Leonard Earl Sheldon

Funeral services for Leonard E. Sheldon, 65, of St. Ansgar, who died Sunday, January 18 at the Mitchell County Memorial hospital, were held monday, January 19 at the Schroeder Funeral Home here with the Rev. Bruce Wittern officiating.
Leonard Earl Sheldon was born March 22, 1915 in Osage, the son of Walter L. and Mabel (Lancaster) Sheldon. He attended the Osage public schools.
He married Beulah Molstad, and six children were born to them. Mr. Sheldon entered the U.S. Army October 18, 1944 and served as a Scout in enemy territory on Luzon, Philippines. He was awarded the World War II Victory Ribbon, Purple Heart, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with One Bronze Star, A. P. T. C. ribbon with One Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge. Mr. Sheldon received his honorable discharge December 11, 1945.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mabel Quam of Sarasota, Fla.; a daughter, Mrs. Loren (Sandra) Dunn of Austin, Minn.; three sons, Leon of Albert Lea, Minn.; Leonard Jr. of Fort Dodge and Kenneth of Chula Vista, Calif.; one brother, Walter of Osage; one sister, Mrs. Dorothy Tacheny of Sarasota, Fla.; nine grandchildren; one great grandchild; nieces and nephews.
Mr. Sheldon was preceded in death by his father; two sons. Meryln and Duane; one brother, Melborne.
Burial was in the St. Ansgar cemetery with Rev. Wittern in charge of committal servies. Military honors were presented by the honor squad of the local Walter T. Enneberg Post 358 of the American Legion.

Funeral services for Mrs. Caius (Alma) Anderson, 78, a lifetime resident of Lyle, who died at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center February 9, were held February 13 at Our Savior's Lutheran church, Lyle, with the Rev. Harold Luecke officiating.
Alma Odella (Lastine) Anderson, daughter of Knute and Sigre (Flaten) Lastine was born April 17, 1900 in Nevada township. She attended Nevada Center district II school and was baptised and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran church.
She was united in marriage to Caius J. Anderson September 8, 1935 in St. Paul, Minn.
She is survived by one son, Paul J. Anderson and daughter-in-law, Rebecca (Hertle) Anderson of Wayzata, Minn. And four grandchildren, Gretchen, Sarah, Lisa and Paul J. Anderson II; two sisters, Adeline Lastine and Mrs. Jay (Selma) Mortenson, both of Lyle.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Caius, and one brother, Henry Lastine.
Burial was in Six Mile Grove Lutheran cemetery, with Rev. Luecke in charge of committal services.

Ruth Engebretson Hendrickson

Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth Hendrickson, 80, of St. Ansgar, who died March 20 at the Osage Nursing Home, were held March 23 at First Lutheran church here with the Rev. Stephen Engelstad officiating.
Ruth (Engebretson) Hendrickson, daughter of Simon and Bertha Engebretson, was born January 28, 1899 in Esofea, Wis. She was baptised in the Bethel Lutheran church in Esofea March 3, 1899, and confirmed at the Viroqua Lutheran church by the Rev. A. Hofstad October 10, 1914. She was graduated from Viroqua highschool in 1916. That fall she enrolled at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn. And received her BA degree in 1920. The next four years she taught in the Minnesota school system.
August 14, 1924 she married Morris B. Hendrickson of St. Ansgar. Three children were born to them.
In 1928 they moved to St. Ansgar and took over the management of the home farm, which time she became a member of the First Lutheran church. In 1956 they moved to their home in St. Ansgar where Mr. Hendrickson died June 24, 1973.
Mrs. Hendrickson was very active in the women's organizations of her church and in her younger days served in various offices.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris, her parents, two sisters and three brothers.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Sam (Jean) Edgar of St. Louis, Mo.; two sons, Don Hendrickson of St. Ansgar and David Hendrickson of Keokuk; also 11 grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Yancie Miller of Oconomowac, Wis., Miss Helen Engebretson of Beloit, Wis. And Mrs. Nora Waaler of Oslo, Norway.
Burial was in the First Lutheran cemetery with Rev. Engelstad in charge of committal services.

Funeral services for Mrs. Leona Thorson, 78, who died at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center, April 17, were held April 20 at First Lutheran church with the Rev. Stephen Engelstad officiating.
Leona Thorson, daughter of Albert and Helena (nee Erdman) Hollatz, was born August 30, 1900 in Rock township, Mitchell county. She was baptized and confirmed in St. John's Lutheran church, Rock township.
October 5, 1924 she married Donald Thorson of St. Ansgar. Five children were born to them. They farmed in the St. Ansgar for many years. Mr. Thorson died March 5, 1960.
Mrs. Thorson was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one brother, Earl.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dean (Elaine) Hansen of St. Ansgar, and Mrs. Galt (Lucille) Mackin of Osage; three sons, Harold of Albuquerque, N.M.; Eugene of Virginia Beach, Va. And Allen of St. Ansgar; four sisters, Mrs. Esther Haupt of Poynette, Wis.; Mrs. Elsie Dieterich of Rudd; Mrs. Edna Muller of Fort Morgan, Colo.; and Mrs. Laura Muller of St. Ansgar; four brothers, Oscar Hollatz of Bryon, Minn.; Ortwin Hollatz of Osage; Arthur and Lawrence Hollatz of St. Ansgar; 14 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren.
Burial was in First Lutheran cemetery with Rev. Engelstad in charge of committal services.

Graveside rites held at Pleasant Hill cemetery in Mona 2/13/79
Graveside rites for Marion M. Schmidt, 61, who died February 13 in Faribault, Minn., were held Monday, April 23 at Pleasant Hill cemetery in Mona.
Honor Guard of the American Legion Post 105 of Lyle conducted military rites. Mr. Schmidt is survived by his wife, Lona; a daughter, Mrs. Victor (Judith) Person; a granddaughter, Carla Smith and great granddaughter, Sherrie; a step son, Donald Peterson and family of two girls and two boys.
He served as American Legion commander of the Lyle Post in 1948-49, and as commander of the Faribault Post 43 in 1970-71. Mr. Schmidt also was active in other civic affairs.
Attending the services were Donald Peterson of Green Bay, Wis.; Dr. and Mrs. G.V. Greiner of Winnebago, Minn.; and Mr. And Mrs. Louis Blakestad and Mrs. Myrtle Tollefson of St. Ansgar. Following the rites lunch was served at the Lyle Legion hall by Auxiliary members, Mrs. Erna Schaufenbil, Ruth Austinson, Doris Lee and E. Drenth.

Funeral services for Mrs. Selma Kittleson, 78, who died Saturday, April 14, were held Wednesday, April 18 at the First Lutheran church here with the Rev. Stephen Engelstad officiating.
Selma Marie Kittleson (nee Beyer) was born September 3, 1900 to Albert W. Beyer and Martha (Lemke) Beyer In Newburg township, Mitchell County.
She was baptized and confirmed in St. John's Lutheran church, Rock township. She attended school in Newburg township.
December 30, 1923 she married Clayton Kittleson at St. John's Lutheran church. They lived in St. Ansgar for several years, then moving to Rock Falls, Ill. Where she lived until her husband's death in 1958. In 1959 she moved back to St. Ansgar where she resided until her death.
Mrs. Kittleson was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, four brothers, George, Joseph, August, and William, and one sister, Ruth.
She is survived by two brothers, Julius of Osage and Albert of St. Ansgar; four sisters, Ida Teal of Osage; Hilda Stonehocker, St. Petersburg, Fla.; Hedwig Bork of Grafton and Lavina Hannam of St. Ansgar.
Burial was in the St. Ansgar cemetery with Rev. Engelstad in charge of committal services.
