Pennyville
Mitchell County, Iowa - Liberty Township
Pennyville is a name given to a community settlement along the Little Cedar River, a mile or more south of what is now Stacyville. Most of the land in that area bordering the Little Cedar River was held by members of the Penny family. The center known as Pennyville was actually on the NE 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Section 8 in Liberty Township. It was on the early established road from Little Cedar to Stacyville. A creamery was built on the home site of the present Ray Halbach farm and operated for a number of years. Although some lots were laid out directly across the road and towards the river, no more building was done.
One of the early settlers in this area was the John Pearce family. In 1856 they came from England by ship but due to a faulty compass they lost their way. Upon meeting another ship they learned that they were in the city of New Orleans and it was some time before they finally reached Illinois. Then in 1859 they journeyed to Iowa by oxen and a covered wagon and arrived in Liberty Township just north of the site of Pennyville. Here they purchased 80 acres which are now part of the Ray Halbach farm.
The Pearces took their wheat to McGregor to have it ground into flour. It took 8 days for the trip, and Mr. Pearce was happy when he could afford a team of horses which could make the trip in 6 days.

LOCATION: Approximately 450th St and Angle Road. Pennyville was located for the most part in the southeast portion of that intersection. We are told there is little that remains except a few hard to find foundations.
Please respect landowners property, ask before you enter.
NOTE: The original Pennyville Bridge was moved to a walking trail, which follows the old rail road track between McIntire and Riceville. Drive north out of Riceville on Addison Ave., continue north until you reach 430th St. (approximately 1 1/2 mi from Hwy 9). Turn left (west on 430th St) and watch for the old rail road right of way. Walk about a half mile northwest following the rail road grade and you will find the Pennyville Bridge. If you continue another mile northwest on this path, you will find the old Brownville Bridge.
