Holbrook's Corner

a.k.a. Nelson

Douglas Township, Mitchell County, Iowa

Holbrook's Corner, sometimes referred to as Holbrook's Inn, was located in the northwest corner of Section 15, Douglas Township. This center was also referred to as Nelson. In 1855 a post office was established by the postal department and named Nelson after Mr. Holbrook whose first name was Nelson. He was named the postmaster. This post office was on Walker's Stage Coach line from Charles City. Because of the connection, Mr. Holbrook enlarged his home to include an inn to accommodate travelers. He also added a tavern and a grocery store. He maintained a stable where horses were kept for the stage coach line.

All that remains of Holbrook's Corner today is a grove of locust trees, two unmarked graves, and a dug well.
