FULLER a.k.a. STRAWBERRY POINT

Mitchell County, Iowa - Mitchell Twp.

The northeast quarter of Section 26, Mitchell Township, the present home site of Arthur Jensen, was the site of the town of Fuller, sometimes called Strawberry Point. This area was six miles from any other town and to make it possible for residents to obtain mail and supplies without traveling so far, a post office was established by the postal department and named Fuller. The post office was at first located in the old house on the Jensen farm, then the home of Wm. Robertson, later moved to the north on the east side of the road, to the home of Archie McDougall where it remained until 1899. The post office operated from October 6, 1892 until August 31, 1904.

A stone schoolhouse was first constructed on the south corner of the present Jensen farm. Later it was abandoned and a wooden structure built on the northeast corner of the cross roads. It became known as the Pleasant Valley School District. Adjacent to it a church was built. It was a non-denominational church. A grocery store and blacksmith shop were built on the present site of the Jensen Home.

The town was served by the stage line from Stacyville to Osage, bringing mail three times a week. It was also on the freight line from St. Ansgar to points east. Stages also used the diagonal road which went from St. Ansgar directly to Fuller and on to Brownville.

The church and schoolhouse were used until the days of World War II, after which they have been removed. Nothing remains today, excepting some stone foundations. This town was originally named for Tom Fuller who drove the daily mail coach from Stacyville to Osage, stopping at Fuller on the way.
