holds 4-day reunion at Lake
CLEAR LAKE —A four-day reunion of the original 50-member
U.S. Women's Marine Corps Band got under way Thursday
at Clear Lake. The group of 45 (including families) came from
Guatemala, California, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, D.C.,
Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota and Iowa.
Reunion activities will include a day at the farm home of a
former member, Mrs. Arnold Dieterich of St. Ansgar. Another
event will be a banquet at the Clear Lake Country Club. Sunday
afternoon the Marine women will be honored at the band
concert. The Clear Lake Band will dedicate two selections to
their 1960 reunion.
The Women's Marine Corps Band was organized
in 1943 at Camp Lejeune, N.C. During their two years of duty the 50
member band appeared in 532 performances in concerts, parades,
dances, stage shows and other events. The group -has kept in contact
since being discharged in 1945.
Mrs. A. C. Medin, Rockville, Md., is responsible for keeping
the 15-year contact, according to the group. She had kept a
record of the band's activities and after the members' discharge,
contacted each girl and managed to keep them writing
to her during the years. A quarterly paper, "Quarter-Notes,"
is put out each year by Mrs. Medin.
