Dr. W. W. Blackman was the architect and owner of the well known three story "Blackman Building" located in the middle of the old main hill on the east side of the street in West Mitchell. At first Dr. Blackman operated a drug store on the first floor. There was a doctors office, a dental office, and other offices on the 2nd floor. At one time, the 3rd floor was used as the school gymnasium. Later it became the Mitchell Savings Bank and then at the end of its life, it housed a cheese factory on the first floor. The building was torn down in 1910 to furnish stone for the new Mitchell Savings Bank, general store and a Post Office operated by Olga Schmidt in Mitchell. A portion of that building stands yet today and is currently the Mitchell City Hall. Dr. Blackman was born on January 1, 1823 and died on November 2, 1902. He was the husband of Lucy A. Blackman. |
