Margaret Smith
Margaret Smith, age 88 of Stacyville, Iowa, died Friday, June 10, 2005 at
the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.
She was born June 23, 1916 in Stacyville, Iowa, to Joseph and Elizabeth
(Krebsbach) Smith. Margaret was a life long member of St. Johns Catholic
Church in Johnsburg, Minn.
Margaret is survived by: brothers and sisters-in-law: Leo (Stella) Smith,
Stacyville, Iowa; Bernard (Rita) Smith, Stacyville, Iowa; Gilbert J.
Smith, Stacyville, Iowa; Gerwin A. (Florence) Smith, Mitchell, Iowa;
34 nieces and nephews; many great nieces and nephews; many great-great-
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by: Parents: Joseph and Elizabeth Smith; sisters
and brothers: Martha (Smith) Jax, Nicholas Smith, Gregory Smith and Ray
Smith; one nephew and two great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 14, 2005 at St. Johns Catholic
Church with Rev Ruben Spinler officiating. Interment will be in the
St. Johns Catholic Cemetery in Johnsburg.
Casket Bearers will be: Dan Smith, Gerald Jax, Roger Smith, Charles Smith,
Robert Smith, Ron Smith.

Patricia Louise Coen, 63, of Northwood, died Sunday, (Sept. 29, 2002) at
Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 pm on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002 at Major
Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., in Mason City with Rev.
William Smith of St. Anthony Church, Des Moines officiating.
Following cremation, inurnment will take place at Osage Cemetery in Osage.
Visitation will be from 4 pm to 8 pm on Wednesday and Thursday till time of
service at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to the Patricia Coen Memorial Fund. Patricia was
born June 29, 1939 in Creston, IA, the daughter of Robert D. and Ruby M.
(Campbell) Smith.
Patricia lived in various communities in Iowa most recently in Northwood,
moving to Mason City in July of this year.
She worked for Fieldstone Cabinetry in Northwood and most recently as a
C.N.A. for the Lutheran Retirement Home.
She retired in December of last year. She enjoyed crocheting doilies for
her family and friends, gardening, flowers, vegetables, riding her bike and
had a special place in her heart for her great-grandson, Christopher.
Patricia is survived by her children Pamela Marie Clausen of Cincinnati,
OH; Diana Mae Fleenor and husband Joel of Mason City; Timothy Lee Coen of
Mason City; and Laurie Ann Duryee of Mason City; by 11 grandchildren:
Jennifer, Jonathan, Alexander, Russell, Jeremy, Justin, Kassondra, Douglas,
Darin, Kirsten and David; by one great-grandchild Christopher; by siblings
Robert D. Smith Jr. and wife Dorothy of Sedalia, MO; Beverly Broege and
husband Keith of Poplar Bluffs, MO; Rev. William Smith and wife Pat of
Des Moines; Eugene Gary Smith of Kansas, Joyce Schmidtke of St. Ansgar;
Ray Smith and wife Marcia of Osage; Rozella Melancon and husband Bruce of
Lafitte, LA.
Patricia was preceded in death by her parents and son, Larry Coen.

Mass of Christian Burial for Roberta M. Pelleymounter, age 78, of
Osage, Iowa, was held Saturday, May 29, 2004 at the Sacred Heart
Catholic Church in Osage with Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating.
Interment was in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Osage. Roberta
died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at the Mitchell County Regional Health
Center-Hospice Unit in Osage.
Roberta was born October 7, 1925, in Colwell, the daughter Leo and
Minnie (Herzog) Smith. She graduated from Immaculate Conception
High School in Charles City.
On June 17, 1946, she was united in marriage to Robert Pelleymounter
in Charles City. They lived in Osage their entire married life.
Robert died in 1989. Roberta was employed at Salsbury in Charles City,
then Pfaltzgraff Plumbing and Heating in Osage and for 27 years as a
radio dispatcher for the Osage Police Department and then the Mitchell
County Communications Center, retiring in 1999. Roberta was a member
of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Ladies Guild and the Covenant
Choir. She belonged to the Osage American Legion Auxiliary and the
Osage V.F.W. Auxiliary. Roberta was very active in her church and
had a strong faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Robert
Pelleymounter in 1989.
Roberta is survived by four daughters, Ann (Joe) Longo of Jacksonville,
Florida, Carol Newton of Osage, Julie (Jeff) Voaklander of Osage
and Dawn (Bill) Johanns of New Haven; two sons, Gregory (Vandy)
Pelleymounter of Venice, Florida, and Charles (Cindy) Pelleymounter
of Madison, Wis.; 17 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; four
sisters, Bernadette Madsen of Long Beach, Calif., Betty Marth of
Charles City, Sharon (Alan) Davidson of Charles City, Jan Pull of
Colorado Springs, Colo., and her twin brother Bob Smith of Osage.

OBITUARY: Sidney S. Smith, 1841-1912, Mitchell Co., Iowa
Sidney S. Smith
1841-1912
Sidney S. Smith was born May 14, 1841, at Henderson, N. Y., and passed
away near El Monte, Cal., Dec. 8, 1912. He received his education in
the public schools and at the age of 21 enlisted in the 29th Wisconsin
Volunteers, Co. B, and served his country three years. In the spring
of 1866 he was united in marriage to Miss Melissa Dunning at Farrington,
Wisconsin. Five children were born of the union. In 1869, he with
his family moved to Nashua, Iowa, and located on a farm. A couple of
years later he moved to Mitchell county, Ia., where he resided until
three years ago, when he decided to make California his home, coming
here in the fall of 1909 and purchased a walnut ranch near El Monte,
California.
For the last three months his heath had been failing but he with his
family did not realize that it was of a serious nature. On Thursday
he was taken with severe hemorrhage of the stomach. His attending
physician was summoned and pronounced it cancer and from the very first
held out little hope. He failed rapidly and on Sunday evening at
8-o'clock dropped peacefully asleep. His wife with four of the children,
Chas. A. Smith and Mrs. F. A. Cotter of Fullerton, Whitman G. Smith of
Los Angeles and Jennie M. Steer of El Monte, were permitted to minister
at his beside. The eldest son, Arthur D. Smith of Osage, Ia., was unable
to be present.
He lived his life in his own peculiar way. A true friend, kind father
and indulgent husband. The funeral, conducted by the Presbyterian minister,
was held at the late residence Tuesday morning and interment made in
Mountain View cemetery at Pasadena, Cal.

W. J. Smith, 89,
Buried in Osage Wednesday
Funeral services for William J. Smith, 89, who died Saturday at the Berry
nursing home in Osage, were held Wednesday afternoon at the Champion funeral
home with the Rev. Orville Meliquist officiating. Burial was in the Osage
cemetery.
Mr. Smith was born on October 3, 1861, in Dane County, Wis., the son of
Thomas and Anna Smith. He lived a short time in Lake City, Minn., and came
to Mitchell county with his parents when he was 11 years old. He spent the
rest of his life here.
On October 3, 1890, he was married to Clarissa Rice, who died in 1911. One
child, Mrs. Olive Lindeman, also preceded him in death as did five sisters.
Mr. Smith spent most of his boyhood around Mitchell, where his family lived
on a small farm.
He later became a farmer and also was employed by the late Dr. M. A. Hansen
of Osage for many years.

Osage - Funeral services for Anna Smolik, 92, Osage, will be 1:30 p.m.
Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Osage. The Rev. Joseph Nesheim
and the Rev. Harold Larsen will officiate. Burial will be in Osage Cemetery.
Mrs. Smolik, a resident of Osage for many years, died Friday (Dec. 14, 1979)
at an Osage nursing home.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Harvey (Helen) Lund, Bellevue;
Mrs. Glen (Lydia) Deal, Boone; and Libbie Smolik, Austin, Minn.; five sons,
Edward, George, and Raymond, all of Osage; Ernest, Orchard; and Duane, San
Jose, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Emily Pestal, Wahoo, Neb.; a brother, John
Cejka, Weston, Neb.; 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Ed Smolik
Funeral services for Ed Smolik, 99, of Osage were held Monday,
April 19, 2004 at the United Church of Christ in Osage. The Reverend
Robert Melhorn officiated. Interment was in the Osage Cemetery. Ed
died Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.
Ed Smolik was born December 21, 1904 in Brainard, Nebraska, the son
of Frank and Anna (Cejka) Smolik. He attended school in Brainard
and finished his schooling in North Dakota.
Ed moved with his family to Iowa ending up in the Osage area in
1927. He was united in marriage to Evelyn Ahrens on Oct. 28, 1947
at Eden Presbyterian Church. The couple made their home on a farm
near Osage, in which he currently resided.
Ed was a co-founder of "Cedar Valley Memories" in Osage. He enjoyed
antiques, no matter if it was farm machinery or household furnishings.
Ed was a member of the Osage Masonic Lodge 102 A.F. & A.M.
Ed Smolik was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn in 1998, two
brothers George and Ernest Smolik and two sisters Adeline Michels
and Libbie Smolik.
His survivors include two sisters Helen Lund of Standwood, Lydia
Deal of Boone, two brothers, Ray Smolik of Osage, Duane Smolik of
San Jose, Calif., several nieces and nephews.

ERNEST B. SMOLIK
OSAGE - Ernest B. Smolik, 90, of Osage, died Sunday (June 6, 1999) at the
Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.
Ernest was born Dec. 13, 1908, in Brainard, Neb., the son of Frank and Anna
(Cejka) Smolik. He graduated from Cresco High School where he participated
in wrestling. After high school, he worked for a construction company and
then farmed with his brothers, Ed and Ray. He also worked for Pioneer Seed
Co., and in 1935, he became the first Pioneer Seed Corn dealer in Mitchell
County. In 1942, he came a partner in the Orchard Elevator and was sole
owner from 1948 until he retired.
He was on the Board of Directors of the Iowa Grain and Feed Association for
two terms and participated in civic affairs by serving on the Mitchell
County School Board and serving as Orchard mayor and council person for
many years.
Ernest married Velva Wright of Little Cedar on May 1, 1937, at the Little
Brown Church, in Nashua. They lived in the Orchard and Osage area all of
their married lives.
For many years, he played softball, bowled and golfed. He also enjoyed
fishing and gardening. He was a 50 year member of the Osage Masonic Lodge
102 A.F. & A.M. Memorials may be directed to the Orchard American Legion
Post 641 at P. O. Box 65, Orchard, Iowa 50460.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 10, at the
Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with the Rev. Arthur J. Hill officiating
and Masonic Rites by the Osage Masonic Lodge 102 A.F. & A.M. Interment
will be in the Osage Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Champion Funeral Home,
Osage, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will
continue on Thursday until time of services.
He is survived by one son, Gary Smolik and his wife, Margaret, of Orchard;
four grandchildren, Sister Katherine Smolik, OSB of Clyde, Mo.; Frank Smolik
and his wife, Becky, of Mason City; Mark Smolik, of Orchard; and Michael
Smolik and his wife, Jennifer, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three brothers,
Edward Smolik and Ray Smolik, both of Osage; and Duane Smolik, of San Jose,
Calif.; two sisters, Lydia Deal, of Boone, Iowa and Helen Lund, of Bellevue,
Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Velva; two sisters, Adeline Michels
and Libby Smolik; a brother, George Smolik; and his parents.

Calif.; six grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren;
and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two sisters.

Funeral services for Ray Smolik, 91, of Osage, Iowa, were held Tuesday,
April 27, 2004 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage, with Reverend
Dennis Hanson and Reverend Roy Ott officiating. Interment was in the
Osage Cemetery. Ray Died Thursday, April 22, 2004, at St. Mary's
Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.
Ray Smolik was born November 7, 1912 in Brainard, Nebraska, the son
of Frank and Anna (Cejka) Smolik. He attended school in Brainard and
North Dakota and moved with his family to Iowa ending up in the Osage
area in 1927, where he attended Little Cedar High School. He farmed
near Osage, in burr Oak Township. Ray was co-founder and 40-year
member of "Antique Acres" near Cedar Falls. He was also co-founder
of "Cedar Valley Memories" in Osage. He was very interested in steam
engines, other farm implements, and antique autos.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, George
Smolik, Ernest Smolik, Ed Smolik; and two sisters Adeline Michels
and Libbie Smolik.
He is survived by two sisters, Helen Lund of Stanwood, Lydia Deal
of Boone, one brother, Duane Smolik of San Jose, California, and
several nieces and nephews.

Alice Snowbeck
Alice Snowbeck, age 85, of Burr Oak Manor, Austin, Minnesota, died on
Saturday, July 19, [1997] at the Austin Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 23, at Westminster
Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Andrew Lindahl officiating. Burial
will be in the Union Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Stacyville, Iowa.
Alice was born on May 2, 1912, in Johnsburg, Minn., to George and Elizabeth
(Fischer) Ziegler. At an early age, Alice moved with her family to a farm
northwest of Stacyville where she attended school. She married George
Snowbeck on Aug. 12, 1942, in Albert Lea. They lived in California during
World War II and moved back to the Stacyville area until 1959 when Alice
and George moved to Lyle, Minn. Alice moved to Burr Oak Manor in January
of 1996.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Dona Ziegler of
Lyle, Minn.; three grandchildren and their spouses, Darwin and Kathy Ziegler
of Kasson, Minn., Randy and Kathy Ziegler of London, Minn., and Gary and
Cindy Ziegler of Lyle, Minn.; six great-grandchildren, Trenton, Mary, Cory,
Colleen, Megan and Sarah; and one sister, Ruth Becker of California.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant
granddaughter, three brothers, Carl, Earl and Floyd, and a sister, Myrtle
Weber.
The Worlein Funeral Home, 1801 Fourth St. N.W., Austin, Minnesota, is in
charge of arrangements.

Memorial services for John H. Snowgren, age 94, of Osage and formerly of
Marshalltown, will be held on Monday, May 2, 2005, at the Elim Lutheran
Church, 302 W. Church St., Marshalltown, Iowa, with Pastor Karen Cluts
officiating.
Inurnment will be at the Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown. John died
Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center
in Osage.
John was born December 22, 1910, in Madrid, Iowa, the son of Earl Vivian
and Iva Maurine (Hildreth) Snowgren. He attended grade schools in Pella,
Perry, and Madrid, Iowa. John graduated in 1928 from the Rhodes, Iowa
high school. He also attended Drake University in Des Moines. John was
united in marriage to Ruth Justine Bretthauer on July 4, 1933. John's
career was in the egg and poultry business, with him starting as being
a partner in the Melbourne Produce in Melbourne, Iowa.
He then operated Snowgren Produce in Zearing, Iowa, from 1932 to 1945,
after which he was President of the Central Iowa Poultry and Egg Company
in Marshalltown until 1955. John then was vice-president of Randolph Foods
in Marshalltown and Guthrie Center. In 1963, he became associated with
Cumberland Farms Stores in Boston, Mass., after which he became a full
time associate with Oskaloosa Foods in Oskaloosa, Iowa in 1965.
Starting in 1975, he spent winters in McAllen, Texas, and continued to work
the balance of the year at Oskaloosa Foods. John moved to Osage in 2000,
making his home at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. John
was Past Exalted Ruler, B.P.O.E. 312 in Marshalltown, and was past president
of the North Central States Poultry and Egg Institute. He was chairman of
the building committee for the classroom addition at Elim Lutheran Church
in Marshalltown, where he served as president of the church council.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Ruth Snowgren on
November 19, 1996; his daughter Jacky Maakestad on August 6, 2004; and a
sister, Adah Hilleman.
He is survived by a son-in-law Edwin Maakestad of Osage; two grandchildren,
Nicole Maakestad of Des Moines and Jon Maakestad of North Liberty; and two
great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, October 29, 2001 at Trinity Lutheran
Church, Osage, for Irene J. Ogden, age 75, of Osage. Rev. Christian F. Gugel
officiated. Interment was in the Osage Cemetery. Champion-Bucheit Funeral
Home, Osage, in charge of arrangements. She died Thursday, October 25, 2001
at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.
Irene was born Mar. 21, 1926 in Osage the daughter of Earl Hartwig Snyder and
Wilma (Ketelsen) Snyder. She was baptized and confirmed on April 3, 1955 at
Trinity Lutheran Church, Osage. She graduated from Osage High School in 1942.
Irene married Leo Ogden in April of 1942 in Winona, MN. They lived in Osage.
Leo died in June of 1988.
Irene was employed at the Bakery of Larsen's Jack and Jill until her retirement.
She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Leo in 1988; and a son,
Richard Ogden.
Those that survive her include her daughter, Deborah Pape of Osage; a son,
Daniel Ogden and wife, LaDonna of Osage; six grandchildren, Colleen Brandt,
Tonya Hanson, Shawna Brandt, Wanda Cartrett, Rick Ogden and Devin Ogden;
numerous great-grandchildren.

Wilma B. Snyder [1900-2001]
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 2, 2001 at 10:30 am at Trinity
Lutheran Church, 403 State Street, Osage, for Wilma B. Snyder, age 101, who
died Saturday, April 28, 2001 at Osage Rehabilitation Center, Osage. Rev.
Christian F. Gugel officiated and interment was in the Osage Cemetery.
Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Wilma was born Feb. 23, 1900 in Gladbrook, Iowa the daughter of August and
Anna (Arp) Ketelsen. She married Earl Snyder on October 3, 1924 in Osage.
They lived south of Osage on Cedar Street. Earl died in 1950. Wilma always
had a big garden and worked as an egg candler at the Osage Produce retiring
in 1965. In 1997 she and her daughter, Irene Ogden bought a house together.
She broke her hip and after getting out of the hospital went to the Osage
Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage for therapy. Wilma liked it
so much there she chose to stay as a resident.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Earl in 1950; a sister;
and two brothers; a grandson Dick Ogden and a son-in-law, Leo Ogden.
Those that survive her include a daughter, Irene Ogden of Osage; a sister,
Loraine Busch of California; two grandchildren, Deb Pape of Osage and Daniel
Ogden and wife, LaDonna of Osage; numerous great-grandchildren and
great-great-grandchildren.

Olaf Solheim
ST. ANSGAR, Iowa-- Olaf Solheim, 91, of St. Ansgar, formerly of
Devils Lake, North Dakota area, died Friday (Aug. 18, 1995) at
Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran
Church in St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Stephen Englestad officiating.
Burial will be in Lake Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Renwick.
Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Olaf Solheim was born Dec. 30, 1903 at Benson County, N.D.
Visitation is after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Schroeder
& Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Mabel, of St. Ansgar.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and
one sister.

OBITUARY: Donald "Jack" Sonberg, 1930-2004, Mitchell Co., Iowa

Donald "Jack" Sonberg
Funeral services for Jack Sonberg were held Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004 at
the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Rev. Dennis Niezwaag
officiated. Burial was in the Osage Cemetery, Osage, Iowa. Jack died
Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004 at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles
City, Iowa, following a lengthy illness.
Donald Lavern Sonberg was born Feb. 24, 1930 at St. Ansgar, the son of
Henry and Louise (Everest) Sonberg. He received his education at the
Osage High School.
On July 14, 1949, he was united in marriage to Doris Wieland at the
Little Brown Church in Nashua.
They farmed near Osage until moving to the Colwell area in 1956. Jack was
a farmer at heart and ran a large dairy operations as well as raised hogs.
His favorite pastimes included craft woodworking and attending the
chuckwagon races in which many of his children were participants.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Daron Sonberg and an infant
brother.
Donald's survivors include his wife Doris of Charles City, six children,
Delores "Dee" (Bob) Onken of Osage, Darwin (Norma) Sonberg of Orchard,
Denise (Dan) Riden of Nashua, Dawn (Courtney) Thomas of Ionia, Dale
Sonberg and special friend Shawna of Charles City and Dennis (Lisa)
Sonberg of Charles City, 12 grandchildren, a great-granddaughter and
two sisters Betty (Gene) Clark of Orchard and Sheryl (Bob) Nassif of
Rochester, Minnesota.
Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City was in charge of arrangements.

OBITUARY: Hilmar Sorlie, 1906-1927, Mitchell County, Iowa
Hilmar Sorlie
Hilmar Sorlie, son of Lars and Maren Lund Sorlie, was born in Cedar
Township, Mitchell County, Iowa on May 23, 1906. He was baptized and
confirmed in the Rock Creek Lutheran Church. His whole life had been
spent in the parental home. He attended to rural school in Meroa and
also the Osage High School.
Hilmar had one serious illness two or three years ago, but apparently
had recovered. The past eight or nine months his health had been
failing and he sought medical advice, both in Osage and in Rochester,
MN, but found no permanent relief. Death occurred on August 15, 1927,
the cause being Hodgkin’s disease.
The near relatives surviving are his parents, three sisters: Louise
and Borghild, at home, and Mrs. Carl (Clara) Flinn of Maiden Rock, WI.
Funeral services were held on August 18, 1927 at the Rock Creek Lutheran
Church with the Rev. O.C. Myhre officiating. Burial was in the Rock Creek
Lutheran cemetery.

OBITUARY: Lars L. Sorlie, 1859-1947, Mitchell Co., Iowa
Lars L. Sorlie 1859-1947
Funeral services were held for Lars L. Sorlie, 88, on Thursday March 13,
1947. He died at a Mason City hospital on Saturday, March 8, of
infirmities of old age. He had been hospitalized for two weeks. The
last rites were held at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church with the Rev.
S. O. Sorlien in charge. A former pastor, Rev. O.C. Myhre preached the
funeral sermon. Mrs. Alvin Christiansen furnished a couple of songs
accompanied by Miss Alida Motland. Burial was made in the Rock Creek
Cemetery.
Lars Larsen Sorlie was born on October 15, 1859 at Sorum, Norway, the son
of Lars and Karen Sorlie. He was baptized and confirmed in the Sorum
church. As a young man, he worked with his father as a mason.
In the spring of 1882 he came to the United States and was at Algona, Iowa,
a few months. That fall he came to Cedar Township, Mitchell County, Iowa,
and worked in the Meroa community. In the winter months, he attended
public schools in Meroa and the Cedar Valley seminary.
In 1887 he was married to Bertha Fjelde and they established their home
on a farm in Rock Township. Three daughters were born to this union:
Ina, Clara, and Lydia. In December 1892, Bertha Fjelde Sorlie passed
away, being preceded in death by her daughter, Lydia.
In 1898, he moved to Cedar Township where he lived until he retired to
Osage in 1919. On June 10, 1902, he was married to Maren O. Lund of
Oslo, Norway. To this union were born: Borghild, Lars O., Hilmar, Louise
M. and Oscar.
Being a member of the Rock Creek Lutheran church, he was a regular
attendant of Sunday school and church services as long as his health
permitted. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees and the church
council at times.
Surviving are his wife and three daughters: Clara Flenn, of Maiden Rock,
WI, Mrs. Louise Berge and Borghild Sorlie of Osage. He is survived by
the following grand children: Lloyd and Myrtle Flenn of Maiden Rock, WI,
Loren, Lois, Arthur, Margaret, and Elizabeth Berge, all of Osage. One
sister, Mrs. Maren Arno, of Osage and several nieces and nephews also
survive.
Preceding him in death were his parents, four brothers and two sisters,
all in Norway, as well as two daughters and three sons.

OBITUARY: Maren Lund Sorlie, 1870-1968, Mitchell County, Iowa
Maren Lund Sorlie
Funeral services for a long-time resident of the Rock Creek area, Mrs.
Maren Sorlie, 97, were held October 9th at Rock Creek Lutheran church.
Mrs. Sorlie entered Mitchell County Memorial hospital on September 27th
and died there October 7, 1968.
The Rev. Donald Berg, church pastor, was in charge of the services.
C.R. Champion and Sons made arrangements and burial was in the Rock Creek
Lutheran cemetery.
Maren O. Lund was born November 24, 1870, in Oslo, Norway, the daughter
of Hans and Bertha Lund. There she grew to womanhood, and was employed
in Oslo as a young woman. She came directly to Meroa from Norway in 1897.
Lars L. Sorlie and Maren Lund of the Meroa vicinity were united in
marriage on June 10, 1902. Their home remained in that community until
they retired to Osage in 1919.
She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church of her native land.
As a member of the Rock Creek Lutheran church, she was a faithful
attendant of church and Sunday school, and of the Rock Creek Lutheran
Women as long as her health permitted.
Surviving are one step-daughter, Mrs. Clara Flynn of St. Louis Park, MN;
two daughters, Mrs. Louise Berge and Borghild Sorlie of Osage; one
step-granddaughter; five grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and
many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Lars, her parents, two sisters,
three brothers, three sons and one step grandchild.

OBITUARY: Eunice Sorlien Chomicz, 1941-2005, Mitchell County, Iowa

Eunice Sorlien Chomicz
A funeral service for Eunice Sorlien Chomicz was held in Hesper, Iowa on
June 22, 2005. Pastor Paul Sorlien officiated. Interment was in Hesper
Lutheran Cemetery. A Memorial Service for Eunice was held at St. Barnabas
Church in Chicago on June 28, 2005. Eunice, age 63, died June 19, 2005 in
Chicago, Illinois after a short battle with cancer.
Eunice Sorlien Chomicz was born July 27, 1941 to Rev. and Mrs. S.O.
Sorlien. She lived in Rake, Decorah and Osage, Iowa; Hayward and Crystal
Lake, Minn. She attended Luther College one year, University of Minnesota,
one year and Minnesota Art Institute.
She married Tom Chomicz in 1963 and they lived in St. Paul, Minnesota while
Tom completed his law degree. In 1969 they moved to Chicago where he began
his law career.
As she was a stay at home mother for her six children, she did volunteer
work at St. Ignatius College Prep School for 20 years. She was given the
Golden Rose Award, the highest honor for volunteers.
She volunteered in the City of Chicago's Alternative Policing Strategy
where she coordinated the CAPS program with 22nd District Chicago police
commander. She became the chairperson of the Court Watch program, arranging
for volunteers to attend court proceedings in support of various victims
of crimes.
In 1997 the Chicago Province Jesuits asked her to serve as copy editor,
writer, photographer and managing editor of the Jesuit Magazine. She
managed freelance writers and photographers and worked with the design team.
She was a patron of the arts and theater, supporting the Beverly Art Center
as well as a member of the Beverly Area Planning Association. Just prior to
cancer diagnosis, she had accepted a position on the Development Advisory
Council of the Chicago Province Jesuits.
Preceding Eunice in death were her parents and parents-in-law.
She is survived by her husband Tom Chomicz; children Susan, Dallas, Texas;
Tony, Chicago, Illinois; Carrie, St. Paul, Minnesota; Leslie, San Diego,
California; John (Lynne) Chicago, Illinois; Elisabeth, Chicago, Illinois;
brothers: John Sorlien, (Ann) Portland, Oregon; Pastor Paul Sorlien,
(Sandra) Underwood, Iowa; sisters Naomi (Leroy) Jasmer; Grace (Norbert)
Johnson, St. Ansgar, Iowa; Ruth (Red) Larson, Austin, Minn., and Lois
Fossen, Minnetonka, Minn.
